second, I've read books so bad it made me crave the Edgy 2deep4u garbage (pic related) and a fanfic written so well that I found it better than the original product, so there is obriously some overlap.

but I'll agree that most books are better than most fanfics

and that crossovers are a shit

but the real reason most people who write fanfics semi-competently is to practice something that they lack so they can get better at writing and publish an actual book later.
