Not really. The movie is pretty well self contained and acts more as a cap to the entire series.
They do have a plan for how to continue the series if the movie does well, but, due to the finality of the ending, it would result in a massive status quo change to how the mane six's story would have to progress (and how they could be used).

The team felt that it would be good to try and wrap things up with the movie so most loose ends are designed to be tidily wrapped up, and hasbro was very supportive of this. Barring an insane amount of sales, this is meant to be the end of the mane six's tale, with the future MLP being either secondary characters stepping up or a new generation altogether.

Seaponies are not the "theme" of the movie. They are merely what one would call the second act. A big part, but calling the seaponies the them is like calling the Gungans the theme of episode 1.

The mane six are forced to seek them out for information on what they are facing and history of what happened the first time the villain appeared (as celestia and luna are... not available).

The transformation into seaponies and travel to the underwater city happens within the first half, and the second half is trying to locate the objects the seaponies tell them about.

The movie gets fairly dark, but not "Ow the edge" level. There's one scene that may have some of the younger audience crying in a similar way to Golden oak's library's destruction feels kind of way, but overall its in keeping with the general feel of the show. Don't expect michael bay level stuff here, they're still the cute ponies you know, but there will be a feeling of some real stakes in this and what they're fighting for.
There's some real sacrifice that goes on in the movie.
