(There wasn't much consensus at the end of the last thread, and it looked like it was starting to change direction so let's start with this.)

Emerald ponders what spell he should try learning.

I'm torn between the trench and the shield.

The shield may be better at blocking, but it requires constant concentration and can tire out Emerald quickly.

The trench on the other hand is permanent and only needs to be cast once. Though it doesn't protect attacks from above or someone charging in.

I don't think a trench would be useful against wasps. I would suggest the other two choices if you haven't voted yet.

I don't see how Trench would be of any use against a flying creature. Since the giant wasps are the creatures we're most likely to deal with, that makes it less useful.

As for Shield, I'm assuming casting a shield would mean having to stay in one place which, if you're trying to get away from something, would mean being trapped and how long would Emerald even be able to maintain the shield while it's being pecked away by giants wasps? Leave a spell like that to Joyride as someone else stated.

Even if the shield can move with you while you run, that's still not going to shake whatever's chasing you. I say a good defense is a good offense. That's why my vote goes to Whirlwind, especially if it's capable of affecting more than one giant wasp at a time.

Emerald thinks hard between the shield and whirlwind specifically. He kind of has a spell already that does what push does, though it's a force of will rather than the literal wind pushing things around. On the other hand he doesn't have anything like a shield, and if it's anything like the one Joyride used it would be incredibly useful.

Emerald decides on the shield, and he picks up the book as well as his focus and makes his way back up the stairs. On the way he meets Lady Elegance, and after explaining what he is doing she gives him his bandanna and follows him back up to the door right outside Sepulcher's work room, where she lays back down.

Emerald makes his way outside and attempts to cast the Dweomeric Shield spell. Learning how to do spells is a lot harder than being taught them, he comes to find. No matter how hard he tries to cast the shield on himself it doesn't seem to take.

What does Emerald do?

Emerald wonders if it's because he is anti-magic that he can't cast the shield on himself.

Emerald picks up a rock and tosses it in the air, trying to cast the spell on that, but it's moving a bit too quick for him to focus on it.

The colt gets an idea. Going back down the trapdoor Emerald asks the chimera if she'll help him practice a spell. She shrugs, and follows Emerald back out into the clearing.

Emerald tries casting the spell on her. It flickers on her for a second, but dissolves away, startling the colt. Emerald tries it a few more times, but every time it disappears. Emerald asks if she can scrunch up a bit, and when she does he tries casting it again, and this time the shield actually holds up.

Emerald wonders if he can be inside the shield even if it isn't focused on him, and gets up close to Lady Elegance to find out.

Luckily it seems to work.

Emerald gives the Lady a hug and thanks her for her help. He asks if maybe she can help him test the strength of the shield.

"I suppose I could, though that'd be difficult while I was inside it."

Emerald drops the shield around her and then attempts to cast it again around a rock.

The colt suddenly feels rather dizzy and sits down.

"Tired, little one? That's to be expected. Casting that many spells is pretty impressive for someone your age. Let's take a break."

Emerald nods, and then asks why most of the zombies sleep all day if they don't need to sleep at all.

"The sun isn't too fun for the undead. It can't kill us or anything, but it saps our strength. It's the closest thing to 'tired' we can get."

Don't you think we've had enough adventure for a little while? We almost died twice, need I remind you. Emerald stretches a little, and then asks if the village is ever bothered by the Order of the Arrow.

"Yes and no. The Order would of course love to get their hands on master, but he makes sure not to make his presence known. As far as most of the world knows, this forest is just crawling with undead for some reason, and unless we give the Order a reason, they aren't going to launch a full scale investigation here."

The lady says with a nod.

Emerald asks what the Lady does in her spare time.

"Oh, not much. I mostly patrol the forest, train, or guard Lord Sepulcher. I'm pretty boring really. I don't have a thirst for knowledge like master does. I mostly just like being around people." Elegance says, and Emerald is sure she would have said that with a smile had she any lips.

Emerald asks how she met Lord Sepulcher.

"You might not think it looking at me now, but I was quite the warrior when I was a pony. The mercenary group I was with went up against him and we lost and we were all slain. He raised a few of us and said we could stay dead, or we could come with him and continue gaining glory. You can guess what I did!" Elegance says with a giggle.

Emerald asks if she was angry that she was killed, and what it was like being dead and coming back.

Lady Elegance shrugs and then says, "I hardly remember it to be honest. I don't even quite remember what I looked like when I was a pony any more. I know I wasn't mad that he killed me though. When you are around war long enough you realize how inevitably short your life will be, and how foolish it is to hate the people you are fighting. Most of the time the story on both sides is the same. Peasants fighting because two big shots are arguing about money."

Emerald changes the subject and talks about how he met Joyride, though leaving out the lewd stuff obviously.

"Oh! She was chasing a Succubus was she? Seems like a Joyride thing to do." Elegance says with another giggle.

Emerald mentions they are on a quest to get some royal jelly from some giant wasps in the Zebralands, and asks if she knows anything about them.

"Not me personally no. I bet Lord Sepulcher does though! He knows everything!"

The colt asks what Gregarious is up too. He kind of liked the church.

"Probably sleeping. We never really use the church itself as a place of worship anymore. There was a time when we lost Lord Sepulcher while he traveled the world a bit. He left that book behind to make sure we didn't do anything stupid." Lady Elegance says with a shake of her head, "It was a lonely time for us all..."

Emerald asks about the Kraken as well. The colt mentions that it must have been hard to get.

"Yes, Lord Sepulcher thought that if there was an attack on the forest that he should have some sort of aquatic defense, since quite a bit of the east and north sides of the forest touch the water. From my understanding it wasn't too difficult to make, just time consuming. You'd have to ask Master."

Emerald asks when Lord Sepulcher does his research on magic.

"Well he used to do it all the time. Now apparently all he has are 'long-term' projects. Whatever that means. I could never quite understand Master's work. Jeez, I feel like you should be talking to Lord Sepulcher about these kind of things, not me!" The lady says with a nod.

Emerald asks about the black shelf in the library.

"You'd have to ask my Lord." She says with a shrug, "I know it's dangerous stuff though. Some of it cursed."

Finally Emerald asks about the cave he saw when he ran from the village.

"Hmm... I'm not sure, but it was probably a shambler hovel. You said you saw a creature near it right? Big, furry, and black with sharp teeth and beady red eyes? They don't bother us much because we aren't fresh meat, but you they'd probably tear to pieces."

Emerald shivers a bit.

Emerald apologizes for being a questioning colt, but he's just so curious! He then follows that statement by asking about how often Lord Sepulcher travels.

"Not very often. That was sort of a one time thing. Now the farthest he ever travels is just goes to meet his editor."

Emerald asks if she and Joyride ever went on any adventures.

"N-no... We never left the camp while she was in Lord Sepulcher's tutelage." The lady says holding her giant claw up delicately to her face.

Emerald asks if any of her old merc gang is still around.

"Nope... Most of them were destroyed or returned to the earth when Lord Sepulcher dismantled his army. But it's okay, I'm not lonely!"

Emerald gives the Lady a hug, and then sits up straight and pulls out his focus again. He attempts to cast the shield spell around her again, but then gets a sudden dizzy spell and has to lay down...

Might be time to try something else besides magic. What else is there to do though? He supposes he could look around, or maybe waste time until Joyride appears.

You could even call me the high priest of a cult" The pony says, rubbing the back of his wrinkled head, "It contains plans for how he wanted the village to be run, how we should act as zombies, what to do if we are invaded, etc..."

Emerald asks why Gregarious asked him to stop when he first came down into the basement.

"Well, it's not everyday you see a lone, living child in this village." He says with a chuckle.

Emerald asks about some of the history of the town.

"There isn't much to say child. We settled here, built some houses, realized we didn't really need them, and we pass our days as we see fit. To be honest, I'm not sure why Lord Sepulcher chose this forest specifically out of any other. I understood why we had to leave the old one to the west... You'd have to ask the Lord himself."

Emerald asks about the whole skeleton motif and everything, and who they were worshipping.

"Lord Sepulcher himself, of course. He was gone for a very long time... We had to make due with what we could and what we had. As for this..." Gregarious says as the pair enter the nave and he points to the tapestries on the wall of a tombstone above an open eye, "...Is the symbol of Sepulcher. Once he had it flown on every banner in the swamp and forest to the west but... All that's left of it now are probably these."

Emerald asks how Gregarious became his follower.

"Well, this may not surprise you, but I was a mage-priest while I was still alive. I'm not as talented at magic as Sepulcher is of course, but I was a great warrior for my time. Lord Sepulcher offered me something that I wasn't sure my current religion at the time couldn't. That is to say, protection from death." Gregarious says happily.

Emerald asks if he's Sepulcher's right hoof pony.

"I'd like to think so, along with The lady. There were more of us, but they left once the army was disbanded... They still have a place of honor with me below."

Emerald asks if the book really is just an instruction manual of sorts. He could almost feel the evilness coming off it, and he swears that it was whispering to him to be opened.

Surprisingly, Gregarious chuckles at this.

"Ha! Yeah, that was probably Pipadeaxkor. You have to understand how secretive Sepulcher was and still is. I don't know if this has been told to you, but undead are generally not welcomed among the general public. If that book fell into the wrong hands it could lead to our destruction and also directly back to him, which is why he 'enlisted' the help of a demon to protect it."

Emerald looks a bit concerned about this, and Gregarious gives a warm a smile as a shriveled corpse can and says,

"Would you like to meet her?"

Emerald asks if it's okay that he does meet her. Lord Sepulcher was quite clear of the dangers of opening that book.

"It's fine. As long as I'm the one who opens it she won't be able to possess you or anything."

Slightly reassured by this, Emerald and Gregarious go up to his office in the back of the room. Emerald stands near the doorway (just in case!) as the zombie takes the key from around his neck and begins to undo the latches around the book's edge.

As the last one falls away Gregarious whispers to the book, "Hey Pip, you up?"

Gregarious then places the book on the floor as a ghostly image of a... Pony? Rises from the book. Her features are that of a unicorn with wide, perky eyes and a happy smile, but her horn is oddly curved and Emerald can see sharp fangs in her smile. The ghostly pony is wearing a cape, and her mane is incredibly curly. Her whole body glows with an eerie transparent pink.

"Ha! I knew I sensed a living soul here!" She says, grinning happily at Emerald and bouncing in the air.

"He's our guest, Pip. No bargaining for his soul." Gregarious says sternly.

"I couldn't do it anyway. He's already claimed!" She giggles again and she starts to hop around the colt, dragging the book with her, "How'd you even manage to get this far into the forest? You a spellcaster? I've never seen a wizard quite so small! Know anything about Diabolism? Not even counting the one possessing you, you reek of corruption!"

Emerald is a bit taken aback by this, and looks to Greagarious, who is grinning and clearly trying not to chuckle at the display and Emerald's confusion.

Emerald explains the events of how he got to the forest, how he was on a ship that was attacked by a Kraken and wound up in this village, and how his mentor is going to come get him soon. He then remarks that she is very pretty, but asks why a pony has a horn and teeth like that.

She titters and says, "Because I'm not ACTUALLY a pony, silly! And this isn't really my true form. If I was in my true form I'd probably immolate everything in this room with just my presence!"

Emerald isn't sure how to respond to this, so the colt asks if she can give him any info on the demon that is "possessing" him, or even about his "corruption".

"Demons have a knack for spotting the impure, and you are incredibly so! There is no way you got in that condition without realizing it. So what'd you do, kill a bunch of people? Hedonism? Litter?" Pipadeaxkor asks, circling around him some more.

Emerald blushes slightly at what probably caused it, but doesn't answer. he instead asks again about his demon possession.

"Oh? That important to you is it? Well, what do I get out of it if I tell you? That demon possessing you is rather powerful and I wouldn't want to be on his bad side... If he hasn't told you, I'm not sure I'm safe to do so!" Pipadeaxkor teases, resting above Emerald's right shoulder.

A good demon will make it look like all the actions you are taking are your own. And trust me, that's a good demon you have possessing you." She says in a singsong manner, "As for a price... She starts, and looks up and Gregarious, who is staring back at her.

"Err, you can get me someone's soul! Or just realease me. This place is the pits, they never let me out!" Pip says with a quivering lip.

Just a coincidence I'm sure, but I find it interesting that we were briefly bit by the fire bug not too long ago, with a fire demon in close proximity.

I have a feeling I know what she was originally going to request, and now I'm struck with the urge to somehow get Greg to let us be alone with this thing.

this is our chance to break the fourth wall and i really, really want to directly talk to Emerald at least once
