Just keep in mind that the mane bisects the scalp. I like to imagine it "growing' from the middle of the head and that it has weight to it. It takes some practice obviously. Personally I like to begin shooting the hair from the "pole" of the scalp (usually right behind where the horn goes) and work my way around the back to the withers. I tend to draw Rarity and Fluttershy a lot when practicing manes because I can give their manes the most volume and it's fun.

Kind of an example but here I actually started with the shape of the mane and worked from there. Silhouette and shape of the mane is a good thing to keep in mind because it will help the viewer recognize the character at a glance. Fluttershy and Rarity have very, very strong silhouettes in a 3/4 view of their profile so I tend to draw their manes a lot.

Keep in mind I'm far from perfect and am always experimenting. I'm sure sempai will yell at me later.

If you try to draw something realistically, like a horse or stuff, drawing it from memory will only consolidate mistakes in anatomy unless you've already had a ton of practice with reference. But if you draw some abstract shapes or characters with no need for reference, you'll practice shading at the very least. Drawing is always better than not drawing but I would avoid trying to draw realistically without a reference.

Sketchy lines are fine. Chicken scratch looks terrible and amateur. Draw from the shoulder. Use a wrist brace if you have to. I wore wrist brace for a month to get rid of my chicken scratching. Practice making long, gestural strokes.

Drawing using only your shoulders is basically a meme. Yes, it's good sometimes. But if you're only ever drawing with your shoulders, you're basically just making drawing more difficult for no real reason.
But chicken scratch still looks bad. Just be patient and confident when inking lines. Pic related.

The more you draw the sooner you realize that you're not always draw from the shoulder. You develop a sense for the kind of stoke you're going to need and whether you're going to use a combination of shoulder, elbow, and wrist. It comes with time but its easier to tell someone to draw from shoulder because it's a good habit to have.

There's a lot of interesting things that can be drawn like that, OK, Rarity got dirty, but how about drawing little hearts all over her and the terrain? Or a lot of her little cutie mark symbols? Or Dash sitting in a puddle or rain while Dash's colors spread around her? Or ponies playing tag using pies? Or laying in a mound of popcorn while the CMC pour butter on her? How classical can that look? If Celestia turned ponies into statues, can you still pie them? Or just something interesting with the shading, where you tilt it to look edge-on and see words or something?
