Like, eyeballs are sperical, at least the kind we want ponies to have. For two eyes to fit inside the skull and leave enough room for brain they have to be much, much smaller. Also, the entire head has to be smaller for balance and for the neck to be able to support it.

If you give them nonspherical eyes, like those of fish, they would not be able to turn them to focus and would have rather poor eye sight. Also, permanent derp face.

Personally, I'd rather have painstakingly created 2D rendered in 3D by generating a 2D image for every conceivable angle of a thing than plain old realistic 3D.

Japan is working on it already, however it will be a while before the tech is at a point where it can render an entire scene in this manner.
