I've kinda always had a head canon show finale where Sunset returns,becomes alicorn, and Luna passes her crown to Twily and Celestia passes hers to Sunset. Luna and Celestia then become permanent constellations in the sky. 10 years later (our time) a reboot of the show gets made about 100 years in the future of Equestria with Twily and Sunny as rulers and it follows the stories of the new elements.

It's not rotting away. The plot is continuously advancing over time.

A show that was "rotting" would eternally keep the CMC without their cutimarks. Twilight eternally without wings. The next episode (I won't spoil) wouldn't have happened either. Shows that are afraid to change anything to affect the status quo, and thus change their paint-by-numbers formula for success.

The show isn't rotting, it's advancing. It's still very fresh. It learns, it evolves it adapts. The animation, story telling, and character progression gets better all the time

Ok then. Then i think it's still stale and their character progression is too slow for the series to keep people interested. Everything what happened should have happneed in 1-2 seasons, max. Theres too many slice of life episodes mostly about the same characters learning the same message. All major adventures are self contained within one two parter or single episode. The fact that they focused the story on new character, Starlight shows that this universe has overstayed their welcome. The crew has no idea what to do with current cast of old characters who are already developed and fulfilled most of their goals.

My Little Pony is a continuing franchise that is funded by a heavily interested company. There are limits to the amount of change to the status quo and themes that the writing staff can explore without being blocked by the corporation.

Anyway, the crew hasn't run out of ideas for the mane six as we've only just got to the stage where their dreams are becoming a reality, now we've gone from achieving dreams to making them work on a day to day level.

Twilight has graduated from being a student but now needs to learn how to teach, hence the need for Glimmer's character to exist as her foil. Rarity has started buying up stores but needs to learn how to run them successfully with her generosity intact. We've got Rainbow trying to be a wonderbolt still to come, Fluttershy and Pinkie will continue to iron out their personality flaws (and if you don't like slow but consistent character development with set key traits then go watch WWE).

Applejack...Is Applejack and will be more focused on helping her sister grow up, but once she's gone maybe she'll start thinking about getting more out of her life.

The sun is about to become a Red Giant.
