Rarity and Fluttershy are completely different too, but at least they show that they have several things that can keep them together. The spas for one, and Fluttershy having a knowledge of sewing, Rarity needing her to take care of Opal, etc. Fluttershy isn't in my top 3, but there's much better stuff between them than with Applejack. And the "opposite" stuff can still be used there. (Rarity craving attention, Fluttershy not, Fluttershy living relatively simple where Rarity doesn't, there's stuff to work with.)

But I can see why some other folks complain - I doubt we've ever had such a focus on one pony anytime before. Maybe two, maybe even three episodes, but we had three Rarities in S5 in a row and now we got one and already three more confirmed.

I guess it also shouldn't really be surprising that her, Twilight and Fluttershy, the most introverted and socially inept of the whole cast are the three most popular.

Most bronies just can't relate to or connect with Rarity as much as the other mane 6 like we do. The writers really should showcase Rarity's artistic side more are have more instances of ponies taking advantage of her generosity. Those are the two aspects of her I connect to and relate with the most, along with a few other things here and there.

I think the biggest problem is that the people who don't get Rarity, are the, and trying not to use buzzwords here, legit socially inept people in the fandom. There's a lot of them. And for whatever reason, whenever Rarity does something a normal person would do wrong, it's amplified to the nth degree. For example, notice how whenever Rarity does something wrong, people never shut up about it, like Rarity Takes Manehattan, about how she treated her friends, completely ignoring A) The things she was going through, and B) That she learned a lesson, the whole point of the series.

I was at Bronycon last year, and long story short, I was stuck talking to one of these kinds of people. I was trying to be polite, and when he asked me my favorite horse and I told him, he said he really doesn't like her because he wouldn't want her to make him wear dresses and stuff. Which is just an insult, I mean who wouldn't want to be prettied up by her? But I think that just shows they really don't get who she is, compared to the rest of the cast.

I actually can't even recall the last time I've had a discussion about Rarity with someone who didn't like, or didn't understand, Rarity. It's either someone who gets her appeal, straight up likes her, or doesn't go beyond "lol rara a slut".
