Last time on Sweaterhorse Z:
Anon is staying as a guest at Moondancer's house to study magic in Canterlot. One night, Moondancer confides to Anon that she doesn't understand whether they're friends, explaining that she still struggles socially even after Twilight's visit a moon or two back. Anon manages to calm her down. They cuddle and sleep calmly into the night.
Anon notices during the ordeal that the pone is pleasantly plump, and has some confused feelings as a result. A supernatural being named Momma Nature disapproves.
Morning is now here, and Anon is in the shower, planning what to do for the day, when Moondancer enters the bathroom, intending to share the shower, not understanding that humans feel weird about nudity, unlike, you know, horses.

What next?! Will Moonie insist on gulleting Anon's dongel, consuming the creamy custard emitted from his Mary Sue syrup syringe? Will Moonie figure that pissing in the shower is fine, too, and challenge Anon to a game of Swords? Will Anon boop Moondancer right on the nose?

High school me thought that Java was the greatest thing ever since my school had a class for it and everyone seemed to be learning it.

Yeah, Perl was my first - I still use it, and still evangelise slightly.

But I still think that teaching Java as a first language is harmful. I know the idea is to standardise what everyone learns, which I accept - they just picked the wrong language. C would make a better choice overall; similar learning curve, more flexible, and overall more useful - after all if you know C then languages like Java, C++, Perl etc. can be more easily picked up.

Also only teaching one language at all at first is a silly idea, it leads to that whole "if all I have is a hammer, every problem must be a nail" issue. I'd probably suggest (for CS students at least) C as the core language with some Matlab/Mathematica as an example of a domain specific language, and some kind of scripting language (Python, Perl, even Lua or TCL) as a "sometimes you just want to see if an idea will work, and don't care too much about speed" language

C++ and Java are obviously the most popular languages today, so of course schools are going to cater to people with an interest in those languages. Do I think both languages are utterly and totally awful? No, they have their niches.
I agree that C would make a good starter, and students can choose whatever path/ language they want to specialize in/learn about in their education.
But I digress,
