Total fanon fanwank time: Bits as coins developed from the horse bits that ancient ponies used to use as currency. These rods of metal (much like the Greek obolus) were a little unwieldy, when you needed to use several of them, so eventually they developed a metal disk which they valued at the same amount as the old metal bit.
