But it's pretty fucking retarded. Rarity is a grown woman who owns her own business (now in three different locations, and her parents aren't even close to being Granny Smith's age.

I thought it was odd in the recent CMC episode that Sweetie Belle said something to the effect of "Rarity wouldn't let me travel all over Equestria." Does she not care about what her parents think?

I like to think that Rarity's parents are just kind of aloof dead beats. They're booth party-goers and indolent. They had Rarity when they were young and neither of them really wanted her so they never really nurtured her the way parents should. Treated her like a house mate more than a daughter. Rarity grew to be keenly aware of this and wanted to become the opposite of her parents, i.e. successful, hardworking, caring, generous, etc. So when Sweetie Belle was announced to be on the way and she moved out Rarity offered to have Sweetie stay with her, something her parents readily accepted. This way Rarity could be the parent figure to Sweetie that her parents never were to her.

But then again I'm a faggot and headcannons are shit.

Actually they've been given two each by different media.

Gameloft's names are Magnum and Betty Bouffant.

The CCG on the other hand, named them Hondo Flanks, and Cookie Crumble. The latter seemed especially prescient given we hadn't seen in the show what her cutie mark was (although it was in a sourcebook)
