It depends on the writer. When spike is the assistant or supporting character, he's the smartest and often the only sane character in the show, this was very common in seasons 1 and 2. When he's the main character, he gets turned into an idiot since the main character of the episode has to learn a lesson but they have no idea how to write spike.

I know that the series targets little girls and that Spike is usually comic relief or a relatively good supporting character, but I don't understand why they can give his character a reasonable level up, turning him into a strong male image for the girls.
I don't want him to turn into a chad, but a solid male that assists the girls and portrays a healthy image of a friendly relationship between a boy and a girl. A more mature image of brother and sister between him and Twi would be incredibly welcomed.
Hell, they can even replace the void of "baby" character with something else.
I would have been happy beyond relief if they had turned Spike into a good male supporting character at the end of Season 5 instead of adding yet another female which doesn't really bring much to the table (not a Glimmer hater, so don't get offended by that or try to bait, it won't work).
So yeah, those are my thoughts on Spike. I really want him to end up being like >>27124578.

Hell, I don't want some edgy rival, just give the girls a healthy image of what a male can be. I'd love for him to remain Twi's assistant, but some character development would be greatly appreciated and he deserves it. Make him someone whom the mane 6 can rely on, someone who has flaws like they do but that may bring a different perspective to their problems.
He has a little throne next to Twi, give him a mission with her where he grows as an individual and as a member of the group, regardless of any physical evolution.

it truly is amazing how much controversy Spike and Ember are stirring by showing character development and "growing up", especially by people who never liked spike that much before

its like people want everyone to be stuck in a time warp, when in fact the show is already setting up for everyone to go their own ways and they have no problem with it, but for some reason Spike is "growing" but they dont want to see development, or that there is nothing wrong, (which there wasnt).

The last episode was incredible and I really liked how they wrote Spike, I just hope that the good writing sticks to it and that the girls stop looking down on him when Equestria already acknowledges his contributions.
The Crystal Empire loves the guy and he is a hero to them, yet to Rarity he is a basket holder or an assistant in her shop. It would be very nice to see the gang have a moment of realization in which they finally see the true worth in Spike -they could even have Starlight be the trigger of that- and him taking on a meaningful role.

I have this headcannon that the dragons, having a natural affinity to greed, are forever bound to it to grow. Spike however, being hatched by the power of Twilight, is bound to a connection with her and thus what would trigger the his true transformation into adolescence/adulthood would be a circumstance that forces him to grow in order to protect her or one which makes him realize that his purpose in life is to be a hero.
It would be amazing to see Spike finally come to understand that he is something more than a library assistant/maid, turning into another true protector of Equestria.

See, I think there's a natural level of growth dragons reach, but it requires a cutie mark style moment. Most of them do it when they get their first real hoard that means something, or act in a way that is valiant/brave. But Spike could probably get it in something cheesy like that.

I don't think greed growths are even that common at all. I mean, a teenage dragon could easily stumble upon a town, get greedy, and suddenly turn into this huge killing machine and destroy everything.
At least for me, such violent greed growth was only possible because of Spike's magical hatching and pony upbringing. Normal dragons probably get educated or taught from birth that their greed is something that show be nurtured slowly until they are worthy of holding a hoard.

I think what helps the first one is that it seems a bit closer to the series' style. Ah he's gotten better, while his art style is in-line with the series, his lighting has gotten very complex.

true, I think it's just a response to what was seen in Secrets of My Excess where during Spikes in-between stages, he looked like normal spike with his proportions stretched out with no regards to aspect ratios.

Though I do agree with his idea that, in a war time scenario, Spike's best role would be more like combat engineering.
