It was a nice and fun episode. Good humour and fabulous pacing too. I think Spike's reason for actually entering the Dragon trials didn't make much sense though. I mean, it was just assumed that every dragon was out to destroy Equestria, when the current Dragon lord was stronger and more powerful, yet didn't even threaten Equestria. Fun new characters, good continuity, Rarity and Twilight were great though I wouldn't have minded Dash hopping along too. I like that Spike and Ember teamed up and had to win that way, it saved it from being a generic BRAINS OVER BRAWN episode which I thought it was going to fall into the trap of. It was also very different, at times it didn't even feel like an MLP episode, not that that's inherently a bad thing. I think they handled the resolution well too, though it was also strange Ember was just willing to give the Dragon Lord mantle to Spike so easily.
I'm legit surprised /mlp/ is actually rating it higher than me, 8's, 9's and 10's as the top 3?

One thing is bothering me in this episode and this is a huge one.
Writers absolutely dropped the issue with his resignation. I'm sure it is about time limit, but still is itching. For instance, they could:
- make him thinking a little about possibilities of that title
- he could resign of the title in front of former dragon lord and rest
- he could make speech about power of friendship and that he don't need the scepter for that
- some hint about ruling power in the same as Celestia / Luna. I mean think of Celestia and Luna reaction if they knew that Spike resigned on it without hesitation
It's just that Spike being absolutely disinterested with the title and scepter is the biggest wasted opportunity of chacracter development.

eh a 6/10 for me, it was okay
I like the lore of the Dragon Lord and Torch looks fucking awesome but it really, really irked me only tiny dragons were competing. It makes Torch saying she can't compete because of her size look ridiculous when the others are barely bigger. The glaring omission of the older, larger dragons made it feel more kiddy than normal, especially when they're dealing with a pretty big lore event. If Spike and Ember were competing against full fledged dragons, it would make the event, the lore, and their victory MUCH more impressive.
As for the writing, it felt REALLY forced and on the nose about everything. Yeah MLP isn't subtle most of the time, but it generally feels organic. I'm generally an optimist and don't like to contribute to doomsaying but I'm starting to feel worried about the rest of the season. TGoMP has been the only episode that I've really liked with everything else being middling.
Again, I don't think the episode is bad, it just feels like the potential of the episode wasn't lived up to and it really bums me out.

I fully agree with you, the episode was fairly boring despite the "intense action" and some of the plot just did not make sense. To top it all, it further promotes the dragon lore from DQ that literally everyone hated, yet this episode is getting massive praise not because it's a well-written episode but because Spike was "well-characterized" in it.
The thing is, as someone who actually liked Spike since the beginning and feels like he's one of the best written characters in the show, this episode's portrayal of him being utterly heroic and infallible felt forced and cheap. But everyone else liked it because it basically pandered to their demands.
Something I've always disliked about most Spikefags; they don't actually like the character for what he is, especially when they demand he change to their ideals.

The point of selecting a new dragon lord is to bring new blood to the position. It wasn't that Torch had been the dragon lord for too long and had to step down, it's becuase he got too old, too big, and too out of touch to know what the average dragon wants and needs anymore.
Think of it less like a term limit and more like an age limit to prevent some giant geezer from making decisions that would primarily affect much younger, smaller, dragons.

I loved the episode, not gonna lie, but it also reinforced my dislike of Sparity.
I mean, nine times out of ten, Rarity takes advantage of Spike's infatuation while playing dumb in regards to it. She's clearly aware, and has BEEN aware of it for a while now, and has done nothing to address it, and at other times, reinforced his crush on her through her actions.
Hell, she was using him as a freaking BASKET HOLDER in this episode's cold open, when Spike was under the impression he was there as a bodyguard.
Every single affectionate gesture, every time she calls him her "little Spikey-wikey", she's just leading the kid on. Never resolving the issue, and continually exacerbating it. God knows we'll never know if she'll actually RECIPROCATE, since the writers clearly can't be asked to decide.
So I'm glad Ember's in the picture, because maybe now, Spike can fucking MOVE ON from Rarity.
Seriously, the joke has lived its life; time to retire the gag and let Spike move on from a crush that isn't going anywhere.

Because Spike had to do this on his own. No help from horses or he's unworthy in the eyes of the audience, Ember, every other dragon in that scene, and most importantly - to himself - of holding the title of Dragon Lord.
If he'd gotten help from the pones, he'd be comic relief.
He earned his win today, and that's why this episode was good instead of suck.

I think I can actually say this was a good Spike ep. I mean, I personally liked Dragon Quest for a couple reasons as well, but this one was better... Not entirely in moral or character, but I was thoroughly entertained.

This was actually a damn good episode, much better than I thought it would be. Ember a cutie, Spike wasn't an annoying nuisance and Torch was an intriguing character. The spacing in the episode was as good as possible considering it was only a 22min episode and not a double one.

At one point Douchebag the dragon is threatening Rarity and Twilight and I couldn't help but think 'why is Twilight intimidated by this scrub?', she could literally vaporize him with her mind.

Pinkie fans went through the same thing in S3 and S4. Twilight fans went through it in S4. Spike fans just happened to have gone through it in S4 and S5. The characters were actually made less less likable for entire seasons. I don't think all of the complaints were justified, but I do think a lot of them had some substance.

Yes, actually, they did. Pinkie Pride I think was the most glaring example where Pinkie fans finally liked Pinkie again after a season and a half of complaining. They turned right back around again after Filly Vanilli.
I also think Spike has been fine up until now, with the exception of Just for Sidekicks.
