I know both are canon in the show, but they just felt off with him.

I get the beard was going for a stereotypical Wizard thing. But it fell flat.

I don't have an excuse for the markings, but they were too symmetrical. Should have been like Pipsqueak and had splotches.

I think Sunburst was pretty cute. It made want to get to know him more and I kind of wish the episode focused more on the renewed friendship between Starlight and Sunburst. Those scenes together, particularly the last few were actually kind of touching. Starlight is filled with regret and shame and poor Sunburst is embarrassed about what Starlight will think of him being a failure as a wizard. It was really sweet.

Wow that premier was kinda shit, like really uncharacteristically shit. GlimGlam was great and I love she still has some snark and the idea of Sunburst not being great at magic was cool (even though they barely touched upon it).

Twilight making Starlight reunite with Sunburst as her first friendship lesson while also making Starlight follow the fucking checklist came across as really retarded. She's in this dumb limbo where she's supposed to be the princess of friendship but the writers exaggerate her autism to the point where it's like she hasn't learned a damn thing. Yeah sure, now she has to learn about being a teacher but they didn't have to make her so obviously retarded. I hope they find a balance as the season goes on.

The whole thing with the baby and crystal heart was dumb too. We learned jack shit about alicorns and all the only reason the baby was an alicorn was so she could have enough power to destroy the Crystal Heart in the most annoying, nonchalant manner to forward a nonsensical plot. Way to superficialize one of the most interesting things about the show. I'm okay with her destroying the Heart, but they could have done it as a result of her crystalling going wrong, adding some mystery and intrigue regarding her alicorness. From there they could have gone into some investigation/reveals about Alicorns from ancient tomes or hell, even CELESTIA AND LUNA. Jesus, as time goes on, they become more and more pathetic, they can't even shed any light on alicorns because apparently they know jack shit about anything.

I barely dislike episodes, generally the most negative I get is lukeworm, but this premier was something else. I actually got angry which is even rarer. I hope the rest of the season is better.
