Almost as soon as Emerald enters the cannon room again he hears a curse from one of the nearby sailors, who dives sideways behind the cannon.

There is a mighty crash as the wall and floor near the cannon seem to explode, sending shards of wood everywhere.

Emerald only has a second to realize it was probably a shot from the ship they are attacking before everyone else has already gotten back to their hooves and attempts to return fire. A voice giving a yelp of pain causes Emerald to turn around in concern.

"Owww..." Ruby says, holding a hoof to her forehead.

"Lemee see." One of the pirates says, pulling away her hoof, "A deep cut, but nuthin' serious. You got lucky kid, but I think that's enough cannon work for you."

The pirate then straightens up and says, "Buck! Sundance!"

An earth pony and a unicorn come over, and the pirate continues, "Go check the storage to make sure nothing is broke. Take this one with you."

Ruby protests, but is dragged along downstairs with the two ponies. No one seems to be paying much attention to Emerald.

Emerald follows after Ruby worriedly.

He follows the trio down into the storage. Emerald can see rather well because of the hole the cannonball made in the roof above letting in sunlight.

There is a box nearby the hole with it's top shattered to pieces. White dust is caked over everything in the area of the box. It seems the cannonball made it's landing in one of the crates full of the illicit substances the pirates were carrying.

The floor of the storage is very slowly filling with water, and as the two pirates go looking for the hole. Emerald approaches Ruby and asks if she is okay.

She rubs her head and says, "I'm fine, jeez. I think I just got grazed by a bit of the sharpnel. Like the guy said, it could have been a lot worse."

Emerald sees a sizeable gash on the filly's head. Though it is slightly swollen, it's not bleeding very much, which is probably a good sign.

"Here it is, looks like some of the shrapnel caused the leak." The pirate named Sundance says standing near crate.

"Help me find a hammer and some boards, little ones." the one named Buck says.

Emerald, having come quite familiar with most of the boxes contents because of pushing them around, quickly locates both.

Soon the board is being pressed against the wall by Ruby and Buck while Sundance hammers it into place.

It doesn't look like they need his help really. Maybe now would be a good time to check up above?

Emerald sneaks away and heads up top, carefully poking his head above the staircase to see what is going on. The deck of the ship is mostly empty, save for Joyride standing near the railing and firing spells.

The enemy ship has been pulled close. There are ropes tied to the Gypsy wind leading to grappling hooks on the other boat. From this and the cries of battle, sound of clashing metal, and cracks and smoke of gunpowder, Emerald guesses that the crew has boarded the other ship and attempted battle.

Joyride looks like she is concentrating pretty hard, and she still looks a little peeved, though hopefully not at him.

Emerald comes a bit closer so he can observe the battle, making sure not to distract Joyride in the process. Though he does get close enough to her so that he can at least acknowledge her presence to her. She gives him a side way glance and a nod before returning to her work.

The battle seems to be going slightly in the favor of the pirates. The sailors are being pushed towards the back of the deck, and there are quite a few more sailors laying on the ground than pirates. Emerald doesn't look at the ponies on the floor to long, it starts to make him sick.

As he look away he notices a pony far away from the battle. It's one of the sailors and he is hiding behind a mast on the back of the ship. He pulls out what appears to be a torch and slams it into the ground. He then says something to it and it starts to glow a bright green.

Emerald feels like he recognizes this, but he isn't quite sure where from.

What does Emerald do?

I think that kinda depends on where he is looking at to be honest, if he's looking at Joy then that honestly does point to something potentially bad.

But if he's just looking at the pirate ship, I don't think that suggests he's planning anything bad for us.

Of course that is pretty assuming on my part.

Now the question is, has Emerald seen that in the quest, or was it some time we weren't with him? I think it'd be in the story, but I can't think of when.

(Dang, wanted to get more updates out but I ran out of time. Last for the night.)

Emerald tries to warn Joyride about the thing the sailor is using, but Joyride seems to be a bit preoccupied and ignores the colt.

Getting a bit desperate, Emerald pulls out his focus and fires a magic missile at the pony. Emerald is quite glad that the spell tracks it's target, because the magic has to arc quite wide to get to the pony because of the rocking of both boats.

The sailor, not paying attention, takes the blow to his side, causes him to fly sideways about a foot. The sailor quickly scrambles to his hooves, looks around, and then seeing Emerald and Joyride, positions himself so he is blocked from view. He starts to do something behind the pillar, and a second later pulls out a pistol and fires.

Emerald hits the deck in fear, but the shot misses both ponies by a good foot, smashing into the railing with a loud crack. This causes Joyride to look around, and seeing the pony she blasts him, and the strange rod thing right afterwards.

"Is that what you were trying to point out to me?" Joyride says, helping Emerald up with a hoof, "Good eyes, lil' perv."

She then turns back to the battle and fires more spells. Emerald notices that he isn't nearly as tired as he was before after casting a spell. Perhaps all this effort is paying off!

What does Emerald do?

(Forgot I said I'd go to a friend's thing today. Hopefully at least one more when I get back from it.)

Emerald keeps his head low and looks out at the battle. He wants to make sure he catches any other suspicious activity before it happens. It seems the fight is starting to come to a close. The sailors are being pushed into a corner, and the skirmish is starting to turn into a few small duels here and there. Joyride turns her attention above, and starts firing spells into the air.

Emerald wonders why she is doing this until he realizes that there are a group of pegasi still fighting up there. Emerald recognizes two of them. One being the guy he played dice with, and the other being the scout he saw this morning.

Emerald starts to observe the fight below again, and as he does he notices a pony appear from a staircase on the other side of the fight. He glances around, and then suddenly darts into the air. It's another pegasus.

Emerald quickly points it out to Joyride, and she glances at him and begins to fire shots, but between the rocking of the boat and the pegasi's dexterity she seems unable to strike him. Emerald fires a magic missile of his own, but the winged pony is moving so fast the spell can't catch up, and the missile dissipates into sparkly dust.

"Dang. Well, I did tell the captain I could stop any magical forms of communication." Joyride says, looking down at the fight again, "Go back downstairs and see if anyone needs help. Looks like the fight is over. I'm going to the other ship to help with the clean-up."

Joyride starts to walk off, and Emerald glances over at the other ship. The sailors who were backed up into the corner are laying prone with their hooves beside their heads. They have been disarmed, and their weapons lay in a small pile in front of them.

Emerald calls after Joyride, saying her outfit is cool.

She just chuckles at this and keeps walking. Emerald yells and asks what that scepter thing was that he pointed out.

"I'll tell ya later lil' perv." Joyride says, walking parallel to the other ship until she gets to about where a lot of the injured ponies are, and quickly casting a spell, gives a magical leap and seems to start attending to the infirm.

Emerald decides to head downstairs after this to see how Ruby is doing. While he goes he takes a peak into the cannon room and sees them cleaning and preparing the cannons while one pony from each team peers through their respective gun ports.

Emerald then walks down to the storage room and sees Ruby. She looks a little unhappy and Emerald can guess why. It seems she has been pressed into cleaning up the water that came in when the leak sprang, and she is mopping near the cannonball'd box rather sullenly. He notices someone has given her an adhesive bandage for her forehead.

Emerald approaches, and as he does Ruby sees him and perks up.

"Hey! They all done up there? Everything has gone quiet." the filly says, leaning on the mop.

Emerald says that they won. He also mentions how he shot a guy with a magic missile. He doesn't go too into it because he doesn't want to sound like he is bragging or anything. He mentions how it looks like they are finishing everything up on the other ship, and that Joyride went over as well.

"Oh! That's good. You had me a little worried for a second since you were sweating so much." Ruby says with a grin.

Emerald is about to ask what she is talking about, but then he suddenly feels the cold sweat on him, and how much he is shaking. Emerald sits down on his haunches and breathes in and out a little. He isn't sure why he didn't feel it before. Maybe the adrenaline is just wearing off now.

"Hey err... You okay?" Ruby says, putting a hoof on his shoulder.

Emerald nods silently, trying not to think about what he did and saw above, and asks how her cut is.

"Oh! It should be fine. It wasn't that deep. Apparently cuts on the head usually look a lot worse than they are, or something. I dunno, the guy who gave me the bandage said so." Ruby says. She then looks around, looks furtively towards the closed kitchen door, and then glances at the stairs before whispering, "Wanna sneak over there and see what's going on?"

Emerald reluctantly nods, and the pair head up to the top of the deck.

The ships have been pulled closer together since Emerald was here last, and they can easily hop from one side to the other. However, before they do the pair peek over the top of the railings to see what's going on.

In one corner of the deck the Captain and what appears to be the leader of the sailors are speaking to each other. The prone sailors sit nearby, with the pirates holding weapons near them to make sure they don't move. Emerald can't hear what they are saying from here.

Other than that he sees Joyride, another unicorn, and an earth pony walking among the injured sea goers. It looks like they are offering aid, though Emerald doesn't look to closely to try and find out.

Emerald and Ruby hop over the railing, being careful not to be seen. It's surprisingly easy, as most of the crew of both ships are more concerned with each other.

The two foals make their way to the upper deck and hide behind a nearby mast, the same one that the pony he shot with the magic missile was hiding behind. Both the stick and the pony have been removed. Emerald looks over the entire scene. From here they are closer to the Captain and can actually hear what he is saying.

"-wait for our mage to tell us the extent of the damage." The captain says, looking over to the approaching Joyride as well as the earth pony doctor.

"We lost Zip, and several more of our crew are injured, though nothing they won't recover from with time. Though I'm not entirely sure Cotton will make it through the day. The sailors didn't lose anyone, but a lot of them are on death's door. We did what we could." The pony says, nodding to Joyride.

"Also, one of their pegasi escaped. Probably went to go get help." Joyride says.

"Then it is settled. We hobble your ship and take your war trophies, and we leave you alive and we split some of our medical supplies with you." The Captain says, making it clear from his tone that this isn't negotiable, "There should be a ship coming by soon to rescue you, assuming your pegasus friend makes it to an outpost."

The other captain nods sourly, and soon there is a bustle of activity as injured are moved to their respective decks and prizes are claimed from the sailor's hold. Stripped of their weapons, the remaining crew is used as semi-forced labor. It's pretty clear the sailors just want the pirates off the boat at this point.

The Captain watches on as this happens, and Ale, the earth pony Emerald played dices with approaches.

"...Anyone likely to take?"

Ale nods and says, "Yeah, I'll see who i can convince. Seems a lot of these people were press ganged."

Well I would be a bit worried about recruiting anyone we just beat into submission, I can't imagine they'd be too happy to be around you. Even if they very likely didn't want to be on the ship in the first place,(I had to look up what press ganged even meant, apparently you're pretty well read Fic~).

But I suppose we might not have much choice at the moment, keep watching.

This makes me hope that maybe some time we can get gid at our alchemy and make potent healing things. I like the idea of being able to help more efficiently.

According to the capt. it seems a lot of these guys were forced into joining the navy so they just might be looking for a reason to get away.

So they may not be angry about it but still that doesn't mean they will join. But I'd say the chances are pretty likely seeing how, with the pirates they'd have a bit more freedom.

I suppose all those thoughts were really just my opinion. I think i'd only join up long enough to get back to land and go do my own thing. I personally would be pretty annoyed with getting beaten down like that, but that's just me. Any injuries sustained on my part would only bolster my silently seething grudge.

Basically, i'm worried about anyone that'd hold a grudge like me, and take it a step further than I would in most cases and try to get revenge.

But I doubt that's anything to worry about too much. Though they should definitely keep an eye on their new crew.

Emerald sits where he is and watches how the Captain recruits people, but alas, Ale walks off to talk to some of the sailors, and from where Emerald is he can't hear anything.

"Oh, there you two are." Joyride says, walking up the stairs to the upper deck, "Hey, you got something on your head there, Ruby."

Ruby rubs her head and says, "It's just a scratch."

Joyride rolls her eyes and says, "You are lucky it was only a scratch. Come here for a sec."

Ruby walks over to Joyride, and she reaches up and pulls the bandage away quickly. Ruby gives a angry protest at this, but Joyride tells her to hold still, and she lowers her horn to the wound. It heals almost instantly.

"Whoa..." Ruby says, rubbing her head again.

"Yeah, lucky it was you that got hurt. Not sure I could have done it for this guy." Joyride says, pointing lackadaisily at Emerald.

Emerald gulps. He never thought of that. Maybe his magical immunity prevents him from getting magical healing?

Joyride drags the pair back towards the kitchen, where it seems the cook is preparing a meal for their victory, and after an hour or two pirates start filtering into the kitchen, happy about how the battle went, and commenting how pathetic the sailors looked as they watched them float away on their neutered ship. Drinks are passed around, and a happy mood starts to flow through the crowd.

"Okay, pipe down you all." The Captain says, pushing a pony Emerald hasn't seen before forward, "We got a new member to the Gypsy Wind. Let's all greet... Uh..."

"Q-quicksilver." The apprehensive looking earth pony says in a rather swishy voice. His name matches his looks. His mane is a silvery color with a much lighter mane. Though he is probably well over twice Emerald's age, he is still likely the youngest in the crew.

The whole kitchen erupts in cheers. Emerald starts to hear music, and turns to see one of the pirates with a guitar. It sounds nice.

As the party goes back to normal, Emerald walks over to Quicksilver and greets him.

"My goodness! A child? On a pirate ship? That's pretty dangerous young one!" Quicksilver says, holding a hoof up to his surprised face.

Emerald says that he did fine, and that he even helped with raid. He then apologizes, saying that he is sorry he lost.

"It's okay. I never much liked being with the navy anyway. I was sort of... Forced into it. My father didn't approve of my 'lifestyle'." Quicksilver giggles and then says, "But really, I'm interested on why someone so young is traveling with pirates!"

Emerald isn't sure how much he should say about what they are doing, so he just says he came with his Master. The colt then points to Joyride.

Quicksilver nods, and is called to a table by some of the pirates. He gives Emerald a nod of farewell and then walks away.

Emerald then goes over to Joyride, who is sitting at a table drinking and playing cards.

Joyride sees him at her side while she rearranges her hand and says, "What can I do for ya, lil' perv?"

Emerald asks what the wand thing was.

"Oh, that. That's called a Etheric Beacon. It can be used to pinpoint an area to teleport to and also has the effect of reducing the amount of energy it takes for a pony to teleport. It's often used by armies as reinforcements. Not so much ambushes. The beacon gives off a large amount of energy that most people trying to sense magic will see it easily. Almost like lighting a firecracker in a dark room. Pair of sixes." Joyride says, placing the cards down.

Emerald asks why people don't use those things to travel everywhere all the time. They sound really useful.

"Because teleportation isn't really the best way to travel. Very few ponies can actually use teleportation, and even fewer can do it without error. Not to mention that teleportation is tiring, even for someone like me." Joyride flips through her hand again and then continues, "Not to mention that the materials in Etheric Beacons are expensive, even if they can be used repeatedly."

Emerald asks about the mantle. He kind of wants one.

"Like, just one like mine or a magical one? You can get mantles anywhere, but a mantle like mine will cost ya. Pair of Kings." Joyride says, grinning at Emerald as she puts down her cards.

Emerald asks how hard it is to get mage armor like hers. That seems like it'd be useful.

"Well... Mine is a bit different from the stuff you are likely to find nowadays. Depending on what you are looking for you can buy a robe with a decent protection spell for cheap." Joyride says.

Emerald gives Joyride a quick hug, and says that he is happy that nothing happened, at least to either of them, and that Ruby got off alright.

"Yeah. Just imagine if that pistol shot had been lower and a few feet to the right. Would have got you straight through the head!" Joyride says, giving him a flick to the forehead.

Emerald instinctively rubs his head, and tries not to think about it.

The thing about these guns though, is that they seem primitive and impractical as hell. And the best used as a surprise. Unless we find a magical means of making the use more practical,(or even possibly alchemical means) they don't feel like a strongly practical option.

Like for example an alchemy concoction to automatically form a new bullet in the chamber or something.

I'm a bit worried about being too bold with Bo infront of Quicksilver also. I understand the draw of wanting to be naughtily flirty with Bo, but I think we should definitely be careful about it. Emerald asks what what a "Breeder" is.

Emerald then asks who Quicksilver's father is.

"Oh, he runs a rope and carpet business in Whiterwater. My family is pretty well off, but nothing too spectacular." Quicksilver says happily.

Emerald asks if a lot of the people in the Navy were forced into it like he was.

"Yeah, it's actually a really really common thing. You'd be surprised." Quicksilver says, giving another short laugh.

Emerald turns to Bo and gives him a hug, saying that he is happy he wasn't hurt in the raid. He then says that Bo should show Quicksilver around the ship a bit, since he is new and all.

"I'd like that!" Quivksilver says, standing up suddenly.

"Huh? Oh, sure we can do that." Bo says, the suddenness of Quicksilver's actions catching him off guard for a second. He stands as well and says, "Any particular part you wanted to see first?"

"Mmm... How about the sleeping quarters?" Quicksilver says to Bo as they both walk away.

Emerald feels a slight tinge of jealousy at this, but really he has no right too. Bo should be allowed to be happy with whoever he wants after all.

Emerald looks over to where Ruby was watching the pony's arm wrestle. She seems to have wandered off towards the chef, who has put out a few plates of food.

Emerald walks over and sees what's there. Surprisingly enough there is some pretty well prepared food here. Emerald vents his surprise to Ruby.

"Nah, the chef has been cooking since this morning. He said either there'd be a celebration, or he'd have to impress the sailors enough with his food to let him live. Guess everywhere is a struggle on the high seas."

Emerald smiles, and then asks if she wants to go see the treasure they ended up taking.

Ruby's eyes light up. Emerald gives her a sheepish smile. He can only guess that she is going to try and take some of it. The colt suggests they talk to Joyride about it, and walk over to her card game again.

Emerald doesn't want to ask right away about it, so instead he asks if she'll train him with the knife he has.

"Don't know much about that kind of thing, lil' perv. I thought I told you that already? I mean I can teach you a little I guess, but I'm more of a magical type of gal." Joyride says, not turning from her game.

Emerald asks if how he could get his hooves on some pistols.

"Probably when we get to shore. I doubt the captain will just let you have one for free. I mean, you might be able to buy one off of him if you are really that desperate."

Emerald asks how much longer before they get to shore.

"Oh, about another week. Maybe a little bit more." Joyride replies.

Finally, Emerald asks where the treasure they absconded with went.

"I think the Captain put it in one of the smaller storage rooms above. And before you get any ideas." Joyride says turning sharply to the filly, "He's counted and catalogued every piece, so don't go taking any of it alright? You'll get your share we when get to our destination."
