She put it together, how could she not? Suddenly Sunset's alive and Chitty is looking for her? Yeah, not complicated.

And think about that for a second. Remember that, right now, if it had been Chrysalis, honest to god Chrysalis, she would have been fine with it. Right now she seriously would sooner put her life or Sunset's life in CHRYSALIS'S hooves if she had to. But it's not, it's Chitania. It's "I don't care about you or your friends or the sanctity of life" Chitania. She knows Chitania only plays this game when she walks away with something.

She's not mad at Sunset, she's mad at herself, and more importantly she's mad at Chitania for playing her. To be fair, we don't know if she threw a rock at her or if it's just flying or something, that last line was ambiguous(Intentionally?), but if she did throw it, we know why. AJ HAS to know, or else she'll never forgive herself.

Today was a day for regrets.

That much was obvious. It was obvious to the princesses who watched that single rock fly, unable to stop their friend in time, it was obvious to the spectators who ducked for cover the moment it was let loose, it was even obvious to the smiling lunatic of a mare hanging off the monster who had destroyed Canterlot.

Today was a day for regrets. That much was obvious, especially to the once farmer who's face twisted in horror, when she realized what had happened. When her powers had gotten the better of her yet again, when they had made a fool of her yet again, and gone off.

Her hoof reached out, as if to try to stop it, to take back the stone from the air in a forlorn attempt to call back all she had thrown out, but it was useless. As useless as she had been in Sunset's resurrection. As useless as she had felt when the mare had called her out. Completely useless.

As useless as a stone against unmovable hooves that planted themselves square in the stones path, and took it on without flinching.

The world ceased to be, the city, the spectators, the princesses, and even Sunset herself, all gone. All that there was, no matter what reality said differently, was a small orange princess, and a Titan of a changeling staring her down. The one who's power seeped into the ground and wildly snapped out, and the all, perfectly controlled endless might.

(So... you want a battle, do you?)

They all felt it, even if it could not be seen. Some strange power was bubbling beneath black chitin, just begging for a chance to be let out. The two other princesses could not keep the remorse, or in one such case the disappointment, from their faces. All around them knew what this meant, and what was to come.

Someone had struck Chitania, someone had attacked the Titan. It was a scene that had played out many a time before, in many a different place, setting and cause.

Yet it always ended the same.

That power faltered, stalled by nothing more than a low, weary croak. It had been so low, so full of emotion, that it was near impossible to tell what had been said. Even still, even as inaudible as it was, those present would swear they could tell the words with crystal clarity.

“It was you, wasn't it? You... you did it...”

The unchained magic, the wild power that had been building fluctuated, causing another fissure to run wild and seek out either the changeling Queen, or the one on her hoof, none could tell.

"You did it for something... but you did it."

A low, earthy chuckle rumbled as much as the stone beneath her did, a spark lighting up the changelings eye much as the magic flickered off her horn. The fissure reached her, but she did not even seem to notice.

(You are referring to her no longer being a dead pony?... Correct, it was me.)

'YOU LIAR!'

The lavender alicorn did not advance, even if her every fiber of her body screamed at her to do so. A combination of stern look from her mentor and her own rapidly failing self control was all that stood between her emotions and the changeling queen.

'No way could you...'

Her denials bounced off as easily as the stone had earlier, not so much as denting the cocky smirk on the changelings face.

Back to political mode, the tallest princess went. She slipped as easily into it as she did a well worn suit, her voice betraying none of the emotion the others did. Instead, she laid on an air of curiosity, nothing to indicate it mattered in the least.

Either the Queen had been used to this game, or she truly did not care in the least for the praise. Either way, the result was the same, the Queen was already trying to leave.

“WAIT!”

Applejack had been slipped back, but she had not gone forgotten behind the pair. Brazenly, and without any regard for the gold plated hoof that tried to stop her, she broke forwards, trying to close the distance between them. Instantly, the Queen was back on her guard, and they could feel the electricity in the air return.

(Stay back.)

A hoof slammed down, a ripple rolling through the ground the instant it struck. In the rumble, the orange mare tripped, her hooves tangling all over herself in mid run, but she did not stop. She fumbled her way back to all legs and continued on running.

"Just... just tell me how-"

(Stop it now!)

Another, stronger shockwave not only tripped her, but completely rolled her off her hooves that time. Her friend almost rushed to her aide, only to be stalled by a much less forgiving, long white leg. The alabaster princess would not let Twilight help her, she had to stumble up on her own.

Stumble, she did, no amount of pain or power could stop her. Nothing on earth could stop her.

“Wait! Just... just tell me how-”

She had been so silent, so still on the other's hoof, that many had forgotten she was even there. So quiet she could have, and likely was, easily mistaken more for a piece of odd jewelry than a pony. Only when she turned that even still, even now, smiling face to the others did the remember that, as she had so aptly said before, she was very much alive.

When she looked to her old mentor with that smile, a small, tiny, dark little part of her old mentor somewhat regretted that.

When she couldn't think of a reason for her to know, Applejack felt empty.

When she realized that the pony was right, Applejack felt something else entirely.

When the changeling smiled, she knew what that something was.

It was something that made that scant few steps seem like miles away, what made the pony clinging to the titan seem to be held in a deadly grasp, what made her heart race, and her hooves shake with the need to tear all that away.

She could not let it go any further.

The rock thrown before had only been the first raindrop.

That's why, they are so hung up on it. Twilight is shaken by the fact that it shouldn't have happened, despite not really looking into it, from what she knew it should have not been possible at all.

Celestia... is a bit harder to pin down, maybe someone being able to bring someone else back from the dead would upset the balance of life and death and its something that needs to be looked into. Also, while she might have said she'd have to "take things back", deep inside she is realizing she has made an amateur mistake, she's underestimating an opponent and now that opponent has the upper hand and one of her little ponies too, so knowing what happened is the first step in getting that pony back maybe.

With AJ its rather simple... It was CHITTY that did it. Not Twilight figuring out, not Discord just snapping his fingers to be nice, not even some random miracle. It was Chitania, a Queen of the Changelings and they both have one thing in common. They both suck at magic, yet Chitty pulled it off. If Chitty could do it, why couldn't she... why hadn't she? Now it all down to a "I had her first" scenario that really isn't in her favor, there is no upper hand for her to call upon. She is the bad guy in this situation and she doesn't want to accept it. She doesn't want to be Honest with herself.

Not in the form of rain, or sleet, or hail, or ice, but in stone and earth. Magic untrained shot through them, kicking up a hurricane in her wake that knocked any spectator who had moved too close off their already shaking legs.

If there was any being alive who would be afraid when a wave of such stones and rage shot towards them, it most certainly was not the monolithic black titan who stood steady and strong in the face of such an act.

(Pathetic.)

'LOOK OUT!'

Her friends cries fell on deaf ears, the rush of wind too loud to hear anything over its roar. Nor could her tunneled vision see anything but the yellow target she couldn't look away from, and not at all the free hoof that lifted from the ground.

'APPLEJACK!'

One swing was all it took, a single strike so fast that it had been nothing but a blink of a streak of black, and every single one of those stones came right back at her.

Though it was impossible for it to be true, any who saw it would swear not a one of them missed.

(Was that really the best you have?)

Power charged again, though from a much different source this time. The other of the two smaller alicorns was already bringing her legendary magical abilities to bare, shining as brightly as her bared teeth in a frantic snarl.

It was only a stern, and unyielding hoof to her shoulder that prevented her from going forwards.

~Do not escalate this.~

A biting comment, one she surely would have regretted later, almost found its way to her old mentor. It was only a quick wit that noticed that for all her steadiness, the princess was not looking to her that prevented her from acting on that need to lash out.

Instead she noticed that nearly all of those piercing eyes attention was laid squarely on those all around them, and the fear in them was palpable.

Her subjects were all in danger, and it could only get worse from here.

In brazen desperation, and nothing more, it was not stones that rose from the ground this time, nor dirt that shot through the air.

It was only a pony, and nothing more.

Her wild charge met a sudden end at the end of a hoof, and her return flight from whence she came met much the same suddenness several inches into the ground.

(You cannot be serious.)

As it to challenge that very notion, the pony rose again, and charged. Running chaotically on all four hooves with head bowed low, horn pointed right for the tall black chest.

(It's just sad now.)

One hoof, that's all it took to shake all of Canterlot.

The alicorn's magic went out of control, lashing in all directions and leaving fissures and cracks in the ground and buildings all around. Behind them, the fountain where Sunset had danced minutes ago erupted as if a bomb had been planted inside, marble and water scattering to the four winds. All of Canterlot, from the edge that lead to the sheer drop from which they hung to the castle pressed against the mountainside felt that shake, that power.

The only one who was unmoved, was the only one she wished to fall.

(Of all the things to challenge me with, you pick strength?)

The Titan never shook against the lashings of magic against her, holding the pony steady with only a single black limb pressed to her head. The hoof pushed down on the much smaller being, nearly buckling her legs with only that move, and nothing short of every bit of her magic kept her from falling.

"Give... her... back.."

Hooves dug trenches as they struggled to press forwards, little paths clawing their way free with every labored step. The unmovable force before her never even wavered, only shaking slightly when the changeling let out a low chuckle.

(This is almost cute-GAH!)

She had expected the pushing, expected the horn to dig slightly into her chitin.

She hadn't expected a random burst of magic to fire off from said horn. Certainly not on such a level it flashed bright enough to blind anyone foolish enough to look at it, and actually leave behind a smoking, scorched bit of chitin in its wake from the point blank shot.

(YOU LITTLE-)

Her still smoking hoof hooked around that very horn, lifting the pony from the ground she so callously weaponized before returning the favor with one quick strike back down.

The process repeated, so fast that none could keep count of just how much, before the Titan tired of the game and hurled the pony back towards her fellow royals.

She came up short, a mere few steps away, but even that was too far.

Her magic fluctuated once more, pebbles and dust starting to rise with the jolt of power, but the Queen's defensive stance proved pointless. It was not magic that came for her this time, nor the wild charge of a former earth pony body.

All that came her way this time, was soft spoken words.

"...what did you make her promise?"

Begging, pleading words.

"What are you gonna take from her!?"

Angry, desperate words.

"Ah' know you, Ah' know how you think, you monster! I know how you work and what you ask for, so you tell me right now! You tell me what you're gonna do! You tell me, what do you want!?"

Ineffectual, disregarded words.

Shimmering, wavering eyes finally made their way up, just barely able to see past the hat the pony was so well known for. They didn't look to the Queen this time, just as they hadn't thus far. Instead, they found the only one she'd cared about this whole time.

Sunset.

"Ah' know her, Sunset... she... Ah' don't know what she told you, what she said, but she doesn't do stuff like this unless she gets somethin' out of it, and it's always in her favor, every time. She didn't do this for you, or anyone else but herself. She wants something, and... and for somethin' like this, it's..."

Her throat closed, already dancing with images that made her sick to her stomach.

So much regret, so much anguish, slipped out from the tallest princess before she could keep a lid on it, and maintain her political stance. For the one at her side, still held in place to prevent something else regrettable from slipping out, it was a much different story. She looked to her as if they were back in that other world, on opposite sides once more and ready to continue their battle. She saw not a pony right that moment, but the one who had stolen her Element, and become a demon. Even now, to her, that demon was right there before her, promising horrible things every bit as what she had attempted before.

She only regretted there was no rainbow to shoot her with this time.

The once farmer's head felt light, empty and hollow, as if all of the thoughts in her head had simply ceased to be and floated free. She could no longer hear herself think, let alone the gasps of horror from the crowd all around her. Her mind instead screamed at her with words that were not her thoughts, but her remorse.

They screamed as they watched what would become of what would be her former student, of all that would come and fall for her all too soon now. Just as she hadn't before, she could not save her now. Sunset was throwing her life away, in a way she already had, and she hadn't even seen her go.

A mirror that reflected AJ wearing a fluffy lion’s costume with three whiskers sticking off each cheek.

Nightmare Night was both long over and a long way off, but still….

It had been quite a long time since she had added to the second list, but today was a day for new things, it seemed.

She had, and quite clearly at that. That alone was the only reason the Queen had not yet blown her off and continued on her way. Even still, she found it hard to believe.

"Whatever you got goin' on with her, whatever you want... Ah'll do it instead."

Even clarified, even with not a single doubt more as to what that could mean, the changeling found she couldn't quite wrap her head around the offer.

"Ah'll take her place."

~Applejack!~

Neither, it seemed, could her companions.

'What are you doing!? Are you insane! She could-'

"Ah' know, but..."

'But nothing! You can't just-'

"It can't end like this!"

She glared, without a hint of venom to it, and aimed all of that empty yet stern look right at her fellow element.

"This is mah' fault..."

'Applejack... it's not your fault, she made her choices, you can't just-'

"Yes it is, Twi! This is all mah' fault! If Ah' had just payed attention to her for one gaddang second, none of this would've happened! Ah' just... Ah' messed up, and Ah' can't let it end like this, no matter what it takes!

At last, the grip left the former magical student. All hooves were needed, for the alabster princess to move closer to her newest fellow royal.

Applejack's head swung back around, the eldest princess and her dear friend alike pushed from her sight and her mind, their impassioned pleas falling on deaf ears as she turned her everything back to the only one who mattered right now.

The only one looking to her without judgement.

The Titan Queen's stare was tellingly blank, nothing given away no matter how much closer the orange mare came to her. No defensive stance, nor worry. She showed nothing, save she was listening.

"Well, what's it gonna be!? You see these wings? You see this horn? Ah'm a dang princess! Now ta' me, that don't mean a gaddang hill o' apples, but Ah'm bettin' to you it's pretty dang big, ain't it? Ah' got a lot of power, and Ah'm not just talkin' magic! So whatever you were gonna get from her, you get from me! You like makin' deals don't you? Specially those where you come out on top. Well... ain't gettin' any higher than this! She's just a bright unicorn, Ah'm a dang princess, everything she is and more! You gonna make the smart trade, or are ya' just gonna let this chance slip ya' right by. Ya' ain't gettin' it ever again, so you better choose now, and fast... what's it gonna be?"

The crowd, the princesses, even Sunset herself, went as silent as the mountain of chitin and muscle, and every bit as still as that Queen.

The grip returned, far harder and harsher than it had before, and far less forgiving.

There was a tenseness to the princess's words, some worry attempted hidden slipping though where it had been so closely guarded. Everything about her body screamed her need to rush over to the farmer herself, but everything in her eyes said she wanted to stay far, far away.

'But if she does...'

~We will deal with it, and her... if she goes down that path.~

Even neutrally and diplomatically said, there was something chilling about that.

"Well!? Hurry up now, we ain't got all day!"

The Queen gave no regard to her words, or any perceived time limit. She took her sweet time thinking it over, mulling it about with the meticulousness of a detective on a hard case. She thought carefully, and slowly.

When she finally brought down her answer, it was every bit as devastating as would a strike in her titan form.

(...No, you don't have what I want.)

It took the breath from her, just as much as that blow would have, and left her empty inside.

"What... what did you say?"

Her whole world collapsed around her, and she couldn't think clearly anymore. Nothing about what she had heard made sense, nothing about this situation would fit. She must have heard wrong, she told herself. Or this must be a ploy, a way to get more out of the deal, she was sure. This had to be a trick, a trap, or a ruse.

But that wasn't how the Titan worked, and she knew it, as the princess had been so quick to point out.

That wasn't how she got what she wanted.

(I said, you don't have what I want, she does, so no.)

"You can't... what does she have that Ah' don't? Ah' can get you anything..."

(No, you can't, not this. She can.)

Even now, even with that finality, she couldn't believe it, wouldn't believe it. She denied it, tried to dance around it, tried to find any answer that would fit when there was no question left to be asked.

Nothing made sense anymore.

She had been through a lot as a princess. Dealt with things she never would have dreamed of before, fought things she never would have before, had to put up with so many things wrong, and shoulder so much responsibility. Somewhere, in the back of her mind, a part of her always insisted it was worth it. Being a princess, as much as she didn't care for the whole mess, had its perks. Some part of her always knew that something, be it the new magic, the new flight, or the new status, would be there if she really needed it. She had a lot more power now, both politically and magically, and some part of her knew that, if for nothing else, she could rely on them in an hour of need. Even if she didn't like it, even if she told herself every single morning that she never would need it and could handle the world just fine without it, it was there.

"It doesn't matter?"

(Not to me.)

Even it had failed her.

(Goodbye, pony.)

There was nothing left.

She had thrown everything she had at her, offered up everything, and it had been tossed away. She couldn't threaten the Queen, she couldn't fight her, she couldn't bribe her, she couldn't even slow her down.

She couldn't save her student, and from the way she smiled, she didn't even want to be saved.

She had lost, and the Queen was leaving, and nothing could stop her.

"...why can't you just lie..."

Nothing, it seemed, except for that.

From the look on her face, the sparkle in her eye, if nothing else she had done the impossible, and had caught the Titan's honest curiosity,

So focused, so on edge, she actually twitched a bit when the pony pointed at her.

"You know what the worst part of all this is?"

(And what is that?)

That hoof shook as it hung there.

"...You could'a played me like a harp after this, and Ah' would've let you. After this? After fixin' her... Ah' would've... Ah' would've called you a friend, Ah' really would."

Not a single shred of body language spoke of belief.

(You can't be serious.)

Almost like she was knocking the denial away, the pony swung her hoof.

"Wouldn't have cared one little lick about all you did, no ma'am, not a damn. Would'a been square, you and me, iffin' ya' lied. Shoot, more than that... think Ah' downright would'a owed you one, and that's the truth. If you came up to me and said ya' fixed Sunset, lied your big black ass off at me and said ya' didn't do it for any reason than ta' see her alive again... Ah' would'a bought the whole farm, and called you friend."

The gasps of the crown, the honest shock written across the faces of the two alicorns behind her, none of that even registered. Nothing around them existed, in that moment. It was only the two of them, and an endless void.

She could taste the truth, without a single aide of magic.

She smiled. The princess, for the first time since time her former student had cursed her name, smiled.

"But wouldn't it have been fun, for a little bit? It would've been a lie... but it would have been a nice lie."

The thought crossed her mind, for what may be the first and last time. The thought of lying to her for that, to gain the pony's trust with an act like this. It would have been hard to keep up an act like that, but all the while... she would have the pony's friendship, through it all. Likely wouldn't have gotten as many stares, or fear. For a time, everything would just be easier, life would come slower, things would not have been so hard.

She too hated to admit it, every bit as much the pony did.

(It would have been a nice lie... for a little bit.)

For a time, life would have been nice, even if none of it was honest.

Things could be easier... and not just for herself.

"Why couldn't you have just lied?"

(Never was very good at it.)

"...Me either."

The smile almost, very nearly, grew.

"It ain't too late to learn, Ah' guess."

An eyebrow rose up, but there was no mocking or scorn on the changelings face. No hate, or derision, for the pony looking up at her with hope.

She was only thinking.

She reached out, but they were already leaving.

"Ah'm sorry! Ah'm sorry Ah' didn't pay attention to you! Ah' should have! Ah' know Ah' messed up! Ah'm sorry Ah' wasn't a good teacher, Ah wasn't, but don't do this because of me! Don't do this cause Ah'... cause Ah' wasn't there! Wait!"

She stumbled, and they just went further and further away.

"Come back! Just... we can figure out a way outta this for you! We can still fix this! Ah' can still help you if you just give me a chance! She'll make a deal, just wait! Just let me think! Let me help!"

And further, and further.

"Sunset, Ah'm sorry!"

It may as well have been the sound of a hammer, hitting the final nail.

The last thing she saw of her student, the very last glimpse of her face, was her smile.

That was all, before she turned around, and followed the Changeling Queen away. She would not stop again, she would not slow, and there was nothing she could do.

She did not look away herself. She had to be turned, by a stern, yet gentle hoof, to face the sorrowful white face.

"...Ah' let her down, Celestia..."

She nodded, in sadness. No denials or words to soften the blow. She could only offer one thing, in solace.

'Princess...'

All three had, at one point, made a promise.

None of them had kept it, in the end.

"...Ah' can't give up."

The hoof on her chin stiffened, holding her more steady, and forcing her to look into deep, burning, golden eyes.

She had lost, this fight was over.

There would be another, some day.

For now, she could do little more than be honest.

"Ah' messed up."

There was not a single soul who stood in their way.

Between the harsh steps of the changeling Queen and the playful yet unsettling skips of the one at her side, there was not a single soul in Canterlot brave enough to stay in the path when they walked through.

To punctuate her point, she leaned over a flower stand as they past by, inhaling deeply through her nose at the wonderful scent.

I actually loved that touch. He really had AJ try everything, but it just didn't work.

Personally, while I am a little sad I didn't get that new Chitty rumble I wanted, I'm glad it went that route instead of a battle. This was a lot harder hitting than a fight. Like I said, still wish we had gotten that Canterlot Rumble, but I accept it was more important that AJ get confronted by an impossible situation, try what she knows, and come up short. This way, she understands she needs something else, and she's got to learn what that something is yet.

I mean if there has been its never been documented or caught. It would have been so subtle most of us or even none of us would have noticed.

The writer "for" something can't really bitch at another writer for making a story "against" his vision of what he had planned later down the line. He just has to adapt and if things happens they have to scrap the whole thing and go with the flow. We would never know if anyone actually did it unless they confessed and we pinpointed exactly when something took a turn for the negative against the "for" writer...

Litterally, the only thing protecting anything at all, and it might not even exist, is our gentlemanly silent agreement that we love this thread and our fellows and wouldn't actively try shady crap like that.
