Last time, Holiday Special showed Gutter Pup her workshop and began to teach him the ways of haggling and standing up for both himself and his employer. After some... moderate success, it was time for bed. But while Gutter Pup slept quite soundly, Holiday Special was plagued by a mysterious voice. When Holiday asked Gutter Pup about it the next morning, the colt claimed to not know what Holiday was talking about. Oh well, it probably didn't mean anything of any importance. With that mystery taken care of, Holiday put together a list of tasks for herself and Gutter Pup to get done; now the unlikely duo is off to start their day. But where...?

Holiday Special leads Gutter Pup to the playground behind the schoolhouse.
At 10 in the morning.
While school is in session.
Aren't you glad you waited an hour for this?!
"Um, so, what sort of work are we going to do here?" Gutter Pup asks, his optimism like a cheese grater on Holiday's nerves.
>>
>>26784727
I'm not glad at all. In fact I'm quite upset.
knock on the door and tell the teacher you would like to see a student so you can return a boat to him. you're a busy mare. You can also just give it to the teacher and she'll hand it to him. let's get this crap over with.
>>
>>26784727
Lets just go buy paint and start working on the birdhouses. We can come back later.
>>
>>26784727
This was a waste of time lets just go get our supplies and start building bird houses so we can start Pup's training. Pup needs to learn about the stuff we use if he's going to be our apprentice.

We got to keep productive.
>>
>>26784727
We are already here. Just go in, make the exchange and get out.
>>
>>26784727
It's ok Holi. He's young, full of hope and life. Just like all the nice colts and fillies inside. Just go see if we can't go in real quick and let him know we have his boat and put it on the teacher's desk or something.

>"...We're utilizing the barter system. Come on, I'm going to talk to the teacher."
Gutter Pup nods and follows Holiday around the schoolhouse like a scraggly duckling trailing behind its vindictive drunken mother. The sound of the school foals talking to one another about some kind of group project can be heard through the open window. It soothes Holiday Special's irritation ever so slightly. She rounds the second corner of the schoolhouse and knocks on the door. Through it, Holiday can hear a few surprised voices, and then hoofsteps approaching the door. It opens to reveal a purplish Earth pony mare. It's Cheerilee, the teacher, in case you needed that clarified.
"Yes?" she asks. "Can I...?"
She stops when she realizes who she's speaking to. Her expression darkens so much it's like her face is devouring every photon on the schoolgrounds.
"Get off my property." she growls in a voice so low and furious it actually makes Holiday flinch.
>"But I just-"
"I don't care WHY you're here." Cheerilee interrupts. "Get out of here now or I'll call the police. YOU'RE not welcome here after what you did at the Nightmare Night play."

Holiday Special peels her face off the door of the schoolhouse. The veins in her forehead bulge.
>'Bitch just made a POWERFUL enemy!'
"Miss Holiday, are you alright?" Gutter Pup asks.
Holiday Special ignores the question, instead trotting back around the side of the schoolhouse. Once again, she can hear the foals inside talking to each other about various school-related things.
>'I can deal with the flower child later. Right now that kid needs his toy boat back. And if I can't hoof it off to him myself, I'll have to deliver it via air mail.'
Her horn glows, and Holiday Special sends the toy boat flying into the open window. Somepony in the schoolhouse cries out, and many surprised and confused voices can be heard.
Including Cheerilee's.
>>

The door around the side of the schoolhouse flies open, and Cheerilee can be heard screaming: "GUARDS!!! POLICE!!! GUARDS!! WE HAVE TROUBLE AT THE SCHOOLHOUSE!!!"
>'Uh-oh.'
"Are we going to jail...?" Gutter Pup asks, putting a hoof to his chin. "They have beds there, and they serve three meals a day...!"
>"Tempting, but we've got work to do. Let's go- oh, shit."
Cheerilee rounds the corner, and she's on the warpath. When she sees Holiday, she makes a beeline for the unicorn.
"Going somewhere?" she growls. "Too late for that. The only place you're going is a dungeon!!"

Holiday Special shoves her snootle right back into Cheerilee's.
>"Hey! Being a huge bitch is MY thing!"
"I know!" Cheerilee growls. "That's why you should be put away where you can't hurt anypony else!"
>"Hurt? So returning a lost foal's toy is a crime now?"
"Everything YOU do is a crime in some capacity."
>"Damn, and I thought I was a bitch. Congratulations, you've topped me."
"You 'only' came to the Nightmare Night play to hoof out candy, remember? How did THAT turn out?!"
>"That was not my fault! That barrel of cider fell into my mouth wholly of its own volition! Anyway, I'm leaving and you can't stop me."
"Oh yes I can!" Cheerilee snaps back, hopping into Holiday's path. "You're not going anywhere until the Guard-hey, what are you doing?! Put me down!!"
>"You're being stupid. You need to think of the children."
"That's exactly what I'm doing!" the thrashing Cheerilee screeches in response. "I won't let you rampage through my school and hurt my foals!"
>"Hurt them?! I wouldn't dream of hurting kids! In fact, I'm going to give them an early recess!"
And then, Holiday Special tosses Cheerilee into the nearest tree, much to her chagrin.
>"HEY, KIDS! RECESS HAS STARTED!"
Several foals that had already crowded around the window to watch the spectacle begin to talk amongst themselves, apparently unsure of whether to listen or not.
"NO!!" Cheerilee yells from the tree. "STAY INSIDE, CHILDREN! IT'S NOT SAFE!"
>"You're a responsible teacher. I might just start sending this little guy here. You want to go to school, right, Pup?"
"Uh, sure...!" the uncertain colt replies with a toothy smile. "They serve tater tots at school!"
>"They sure do. Come on, let's get going before she gets out of that tr-
SMASH!
And then, Holiday Special's vision fills with stars.

I suggested that as a way mostly to avoid getting in a fight with her and exacerbate her issues with us. While flinging her away would probably be efficient in removing her from our presence, it might not be the most tactful way of doing so.

"Miss Holiday!" Gutter Pup gasps, glancing back and forth between Cheerilee and his fallen employer. He doesn't seem sure of what he should do.
"Don't get too close to her!" Cheerilee warns him. "I don't know what she told you, but she's NOT somepony you can trust."
Gutter Pup gives a look of disbelief. "Are you sure you have the right pony?" he asks. "Miss Holiday's been so nice to me."
Cheerilee glares down at Holiday Special as she sits up, groaning and rubbing the back of her neck. "I truly doubt that." she says icily.
>"Urrngh... It's true: Me being a bitch... 'TWAS A PLAYFUL JEST, SISTER!"
Cheerilee jumps back at Holiday's sudden outburst. And then, she falls over as Holiday Special sucker punches her in the muzzle, drawing blood and making her cry out.
>"BOOK IT!!!"

>"..Don't worry, kid. It's not like I'm in the mob or anything. I just... get in trouble a bit. I don't go out of my way to ruin lives."
Holiday Special thinks back to her karaoke session a couple of nights earlier.
>"...Usually."
"Oh..." Gutter Pup looks down at the ground as he walks. Holiday Special can almost hear the gears in his head turning. "So... You don't like most ponies?"
>"Nope."
"Why not?"
Holiday Special pauses.
>"Huh?"
"You just got done telling me that you don't like most ponies and you get in trouble with them, so they don't like you either. So, why don't you like ponies?"
>>
>>26801638
Because they're all too happy to be controlled by fate. None of them think for themselves or even have an ounce of ambition. But that's not the worst part. The worst part is that they want to pass that apathy on to the next generation.
>>
>>26801638
because that's the whole point of theus cyoa! mwahahaah
Because they always expect something in return
Like, you're the friend of somepony, and if they've got problem, you've got to be there, you can't be rude to them, etc, etc, etc
And before you relize it, you're more about being what other what you to be that being you!
Really, most people are friendly not because they like like people, but because they don't want people to be mean to them
See that teacher earlier? People say she's nice, but she's not because she like people, no, look at how she was with me!
That's because when you've got friends, uou can pretend to be super nice and virtuous because they all agree with you, because they're friends, and they're super awesome and kind too!
But that goodness, it's actually about as deep as a puddle
>>
>>26801638
It's just such a bother to deal with them. always wanting to be your friend because they think they can get free shit from you, or reduced prices, or wanting to talk about the weather, or for you to listen to some dumb boring bullshit that happened to them once years ago for the thousandth fucking time because they're too retarded to remember they've already told you this fucking boring ass story multiple times before.
And sometimes I just want to get shit over with and go home, but they decide to make it take longer than it needs to by starting some pointless conversation that neither of us care about and aren't even going to remember once it's over.
Even if you do make friends with someone, they'll just up and stop talking to you one day and won't say why, or move away and say they'll keep in touch, and then never talk to you again, or make new friends they think are better and then leave you by yourself.
It's all just so pointless, nothing good ever comes from it, and I don't care about any of it, but they do it anyway.
It's easier to just not bother and stay alone.
Sometimes they're persistent and won't fuck off even though you tell them nicely to fuck off, so the only way to get them to stop is to be mean.
>>
>>26801638
it's just easier not to deal with them often.
>>
>>26801638

>"Please. Really, most ponies are friendly not because they like ponies, but because they don't want ponies to be mean to them. Plus, they always expect something in return. Like, you're the friend of some pony, and if they've got a problem, you've got to be there, you can't be rude to them, etc., etc., etc.. And before you realize it, you're more about being what others want you to be than being you! Or, they want to be your friend because they think they can get free shit from you, or reduced prices, or wanting to talk about the weather, or for you to listen to some dumb boring bullshit that happened to them once years ago for the THOUSANDTH fucking time because they're too retarded to remember they've already told you this fucking boring ass story multiple times before. But sometimes I just want to get shit OVER WITH and go home, but they decide to make it take longer than it needs to by starting some pointless conversation that neither of us care about and aren't even going to remember once it's over! Even if you do make friends with someone, they'll just up and stop talking to you one day and won't say why, or move away and say they'll keep in touch, and then NEVER TALK TO YOU AGAIN, OR MAKE NEW FRIENDS THEY THINK ARE BETTER AND THEN LEAVE YOU BY YOURSELF!!!"

Holiday Special finally pauses her rant when she remembers that it's Gutter Pup that she's yelling in the face of at the moment; she quietly turns away from him and keeps walking.
>"...It's all just so pointless, nothing good ever comes from it, and I don't care about any of it, but they do it anyway..."
She sighs as she pushes open the door to the hardware store.
>"It's easier to just not bother and stay alone."
Not daring to set her off again, Gutter Pup follows her in in silence. She walks up to the counter where a bored-looking young stallion in a cap is reading a magazine. When he sees who his customer is, he mumbles to himself unhappily before addressing her: "Yes...?"
>"I need some paint."
"Aisle 2, on the right."
Not bothering to thank him, Holiday Special follows his directions, which lead her and Gutter Pup to a cornucopia of paint cans.

Holiday Special levitates a few cans off the shelf and inspects them.

Beckoning for Gutter Pup to follow her, Holiday brings her paint cans to the front counter. The clerk glances up at them, then at her.
"Anything else?" he asks curtly.

"I tried being nice to you." he answers icily as he tosses the bits into his register. "Up until you punched me in the mouth for it."
Holiday blushes a bit. She'd been a bit drunker than usual that day. Gutter Pup gives Holiday a shocked look, which just makes her blush harder.
"Maybe you'd get less 'sass' if you practiced what you preached." the clerk says flatly, returning his attention to his magazine. "Now, if you don't need anything else, I'd appreciate if you leaved my store."

Holiday Special removes the green paint can from her bag and quickly returns it to the shelf, swapping it for a bright, vibrant blue instead. She bags the last can herself and gives Gutter Pup a forced smile.

Biting her tongue over being interrupted, Holiday instead obliges her eager yet timid helper:
>"Can you paint?"
"Well..." He glances off to the side. "I've never really tried-"
>"Then there's no better time to start! Pop those paint cans open, grab a brush and a birdhouse, and let out your inner Balk Ross."
"Really...?" Gutter Pup noses through the bag of paint cans with cautious intrigue. "Wha... What color should I paint them?"
>"Anything you want, kid. Be creative. Just don't spill too much paint, or put too much of it on the brush at once. And get a cup of water to rinse the brush with so you don't mix up the colors. That's really all there is to it."
A small smile spreads across Gutter Pup's face. "Okay, I'll do the best job I can...!" he promises, gathering up the tools he needs around an old table with a gimpy leg.
>'Kind of fitting for him.'
Once he's all set up, Holiday floats the first birdhouse over to him.
>"By the way, I'm ssss..."
Holiday's face contorts as she struggles to get THAT word out.
>"I'm... sssor-ry, about yelling at you before. I didn't mean to scare you. I just..."
She sighs, trying to dismiss those unpleasant thoughts of her past from her mind.
>"Never mind. Just... I want you to know that I don't like being mean to kids."
"It's alright, Miss Holiday." he answers, picking his chin up a bit. "You've still been a lot nicer to me than most other ponies. Not that I blame them... Everypony has to vent their frustrations now and then. It's better that they aim them at me instead of each other. That's part of my job...!"
>"Well, your job now is painting. So, have fun, kiddo."
Gutter Pup grins and takes the brush in his mouth, and the two of them set to work. With two ponies working in tandem, it doesn't feel like long at all before Holiday Special has finished her eighth birdhouse. Wiping her brow, she turns and glances over Gutter Pup's shoulder.

Images flash in Holiday Special's mind of that smug cunt teacher watching her being dragged away kicking and swearing like a sailor by the Royal Guard. Again.
And yet, something's different this time. Normally that notion just fills Holiday with annoyance, since it means a day of forced sobriety (or, Celestia forbid, a weekend). But this time, it makes her stomach turn to ice.
>"You keep painting those birdhouses, kiddo. I'll... go see who's at the door."
"Okay, Miss Holiday."
The festive-colored mare creeps upstairs and quietly opens the basement door, just in time to hear another salvo of irate pounding on her front door. As quickly and quietly as she can (a skill Holiday has had much practice with), she slinks through the living room and takes a peek out the window, just as her unwanted guests beat on the door for a third time.

Holiday Special bows her head and sighs.
>"Alright, you guys win... I'll come along quietly."
"Pity." Cruller responds, exchanging a look with his partner. "I was hoping to give that tangled mane of yours some walnut shampoo before we brought you in. Oh well. Cuff her, Fritter."
Holiday Special glances up at the guards.
>"You didn't let me finish. I'll be glad to come along quietly... once I see a warrant for my arrest."
Fritter stops in his tracks. Cruller's smile vanishes.
"...Uh..."
>"You DO have a warrant, right? Or did you just come over here straight from the donut shop like usual?"
"For your information, we stopped back at Town Hall first!" Fritter says matter-of-factly.
"SHUT UP!" Cruller barks, making his partner flinch. Cruller turns his attention back to Holiday, snorting with annoyance.
"We don't... have a warrant..." he grudgingly admits.
>"Ah. Well, in that case, here's what I'd suggest. Why don't you assholes get your fatfuck posteriors off of my property - which that stoop is a part of for another three days yet - go back to Town Hall, get a warrant for my arrest, and then roll it up into a nice tight little tube, and shove it RIGHT UP YOUR ASSES!!"
SLAM!
"WE'LL BE BACK, HOLIDAY!" Cruller yells through the door. "DON'T GO ANYWHERE, YOU HEAR ME?!"
Holiday Special doesn't respond. She hears the guards grumble and bicker amongst themselves, their voices and hoofsteps gradually trailing off until they're no longer audible. Finally, she breathes a heavy sigh of relief.
>"Pheeeew...!"
However, even though the danger is gone (for the moment), something is still nagging at the back of Holiday's mind...

Holiday Special's neck cracks repeatedly as she angles it so that she's facing Gutter Pup.
>"Nope. Not okay, kid. Not one bit."
"What's wrong?" Gutter Pup asks, his ears flopping over with sadness.
>"©π€R1L¥ y0√ |i™L3 WhO®€ !"
Gutter Pup didn't understand that. And something about it terrified him too much to pursue the issue.
>"...........................Excuse me."
Holiday Special trots up to her room, leaving a confused and slightly scared Gutter Pup at the bottom of the stairs. He can hear a door close with a soft click.
And then, Gutter Pup's poor, virgin ears are assaulted by what his limited vocabulary and narrow perception of the world can only describe as "the screams of Tartersauce." A sheer, wailing cacophony like some eldritch orchestra bombards his mind and his very soul with the melody of the damned. The blood-caked backbone of the insufferable symphony is the rhythmic beating of some unholy chthonic heart being bludgeoned and battered by the splintered bones of undying ghouls, contrasted by the brassy, booming roars of jibbering demons belching miasma and pestilence, flanked by blighted, whining flutes carved from twisted trees grown in a mulch of brimstone and the dead, rotting flesh of lamenting mothers, all led by rusted harps lined with stretched tendons for strings, plucked upon by the putrefying corpses of dead angels, violently plucked from their pathetic paradise and choked to death on sin and despair, then set up by a demented puppeteer in a grisly mockery of the purity and clemency they once embodied.
An auditory Holocaust, a plague of the very being, carried upon the cries and shouts of a red-and-green unicorn mare.

Ten minutes later, Holiday Special leaves her room, a little smile on her face.
>'I feel better than I have in years!'

Holiday Special carries Gutter Pup over to the couch and sits down. Along the way, she starts humming her favorite song for him.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-L__6RKgTZc
Gutter Pup seizes up a bit at the unfamiliar sound, but once he realizes where it's coming from, he quickly relaxes. Holiday can feel him sink into her, squirming into a more comfortable position as he sniffs and rubs his eyes. After a few moments of humming and cuddling Gutter Pup, the colt's breathing finally slows down again. Holiday can hear him sigh softly to himself.
>"That's it... Don't fret now..."
Gutter Pup looks up at her, his eyes still wobbly, but brighter and happier now.
>"Are you okay?"
Gutter Pup nods. "Uh-huh..."
>"That's my big boy... Let's go check up on your birdhouses, hmm? I bet you did great."
Gutter Pup's eyes flicker with realization.
"O-oh, right..." he mumbles, hopping down off Holiday's lap. "I finished them all while you were answering the door. I did my best to make them look nice and welcoming...!"
>"I'm sure you did, and I'm certain Butterfly will appreciate them too."
Holiday follows Gutter Pup back downstairs. She notices he's a bit less timid than before: There's a spring in his step now. He keeps looking back as he canters downstairs, like he's making sure Holiday is still following him.
"Here they are...!" he says in what might be his proudest voice (so, marginally prouder than usual), holding his hoof out at his colorful and slightly crooked display. He looks at Holiday eagerly, awaiting her response.

>'Because I'll strangle her with her mane if she does.'
Gutter Pup smiles widely. "Thank you very much...!" he says, genuine appreciation on his face and in his voice. His little tail begins to wag bag and forth.
>'Like a pup's... Cute.'
Holiday inspects the birdhouses more closely.
>'They're not all dry, but I'm on a time limit before those tin-plated pigs come back. Guess they'll have to dry out in the cart.'
>"Let's get these to Mutterfly's place. We're still on a schedule."
"Okay...!" Gutter Pup salutes Holiday, and she levitates the wetter birdhouses upstairs and out to her cart while Gutter Pup carries the dry ones. Once the 8 birdhouses are all loaded up, the duo makes their trek across town. There's probably some interesting stuff going on there that could lead you to adventure, but who gives a shit - there's payment to make. Soon enough, the squalid hut at the edge of the forest appears before Holiday and Gutter Pup. Holiday knocks on the door, and the timid yellow pegasus answers.
"Oh, h-hello again." she mumbles. "Did you, um...?"
>"Birdhouses, yeah. Eight of them. Got 'em all right here."
Stutterply's face lights up, and she opens the door all the way. There's a disgruntled-looking white rabbit by her hoof.
"Oh, wonderful...!" the mare exclaims. "How much would you like for them?"

For a moment, Holiday considers not revealing her name. However, a thought occurs to her as she ponders telling off the shy horse:
>'State-mandated friends are one thing, but character witnesses might be useful right now... Maybe I should play along.'
>"I'm... Holiday Special. And this little guy is Gutter Pup. He painted all those birdhouses."
"Hrllo...!" Gutter Pup says around the birdhouse clutched in his teeth with a shy little wave.
"It's nice to meet you." Sputterzwei responds, taking the birdhouse from his mouth and inspecting it. "You did a lovely job coloring these, Gutter Pup. They're so bright and vibrant. I'm sure my birds will love them! Ooh, and this one has a cute little smiley face on it. This will really brighten up Russell's day, won't it, Russell?"
Holiday and Gutter Pup follow the yellow mare's gaze upwards to a crow perched atop her roof. The crow looks even less friendly than Holiday Special herself, but at Rudderwry's behest, he gives a stern nod of approval and a horrific squawk of jubilance.
>"Charming. Anyway, we better get going. We've got a bunch more sh...tuff to do today. Come on, kiddo."
"Okay, miss Holiday." he responds.
"Waitwaitwait!" Wondermai suddenly squeaks.
>'Oh, here we fucking go...'
Holiday Special turns back to the meek mare, an annoyed look on her face.
>"Yes...?"
"I, um..." Frugal Day taps her hooves together, instinctively flinching at Holiday's expression but surprisingly not dropping the issue. "I know you don't... always enjoy the company of other ponies, but... um..."
>"Spit it out, Rut Her Dry."
The pegasus blushes. "Yes, of course. Um, would you maybe like to come in and have a cup of tea, and maybe some, uh... l-lemon squares?" She punctuates her offer with a nervous grin and that annoying little squeaky noise.
Holiday gives her a very unamused look.
>"I don't think-"
She's cut off by the growling of her stomach.
'Fuck you, stomach, I don't want to.'
It growls again.

>'Awwww, damn it...'
Her rumbling stomach shatters Holiday's defenses like an earthquake knocking down the walls of a sandcastle, and the grouchy mare soon relents.
>"...Alright. Free food is free food. Right, Gutter Pup? You want some lunch from the nice, not-at-all-annoying mare?"
"Two meals in one day...?" Gutter Pup says, his eyes positively sparkling by now "That sounds amazing...!"
>'This kid is just screwing with me by this point, isn't he?'
"Your friend sounds hungry." Fruitfly comments, standing aside. "Please, come in, make yourselves comfortable!"
>'My WHAT?'
"Okay...!" Gutter Pup says, eagerly trotting inside and having a seat at Scuttlebug's table.
>"But, he's not..."
"I'm not what?" Gutter Pup asks as Bumblebee pours him a steaming cup of tea from a fancy little kettle.
>"You're... not... to be modest about what you eat and drink!"
Holiday turns to her... gracious hostess.
>"He eats like a bird. Don't let him refuse anything. He's going to try and be all humble and overly polite."
"Ohhh...!" Bottletop responds, giving the colt a fond smile. "I see. I'm the same way, dear. I understand."
>'Thank Sunbutt.'
"Well, I guess I am a bit reserved..." Gutter Pup mumbles as a big plate of fragrant lemon bars is set in front of him.
"Don't be shy." the pegasus urges as Holiday sits down. "That goes for you both. Please, eat and drink as much as you like."
>"Can do! Thanks, Subtlesly!"
"A-actually, it's Fluttershy..." the yellow horse mumbles. "Did I forget to introduce myself? How rude of me..." She turns to Gutter Pup again and introduces herself and her rabbit while Holiday gorges herself.
>'Ooh, these are pretty damn tasty. Soft, dense, and just sweet enough to not pucker my lips. Or ponut.
>Tea's not bad either. Smells nice, not too sweet or bitter... Reminds me of how Daddy used to make it...'
She sighs and looks out the window.

Holiday Special pauses and and swallows her next lemon square before she sputters any more crumbs around.
>"Don't talk with your mouth full, kiddo."
She turns to Flustersky.
>"Nope, nothing wrong here! Just surprised how good the grub is, that's all."
For emphasis, Holiday grabs another lemon square and shoves it in her mouth, smiling and rubbing her belly in a very unconvincing manner.
>"Mmm-MM! Yummo!"
Butterpie and Gutter Pup exchange a nervous look.
"Are you sure you're okay, Miss Holiday...?" Gutter Pup asks.
Holiday's incredibly unconvincing mask cracks. She sighs, and reaches for her tea cup.
>"It's nothing, kiddo... This tea just reminds me of my dad."
>'Please don't ask.'
"It does...?" he asks. "How come?"
>'Damn it... I don't want to lie to him, but...'
Holiday looks down quietly. She takes another sip of her tea.

>"My dad was always there for me. Even when I got in trouble, or I broke something, or I did something that sounded good but then it made me feel like garbage later, he'd always come and find me holed up in my room, and he'd scoop me up and make me feel better. Even when I didn't want him to... I gave him a real earful a few times, let me tell you.
>But he didn't mind. My dad had the patience of a saint. Even when I was a rotten little ffff...filly, he'd just let me vent and sulk and whine until I 'got all the angry out,' as he put it. Then he'd bring me some hot soup, or tea, or some cookies... Something to cheer me up. Or maybe just to soften the blow of whatever punishment I'd get, heh."
"He brought you food when you were in trouble...?" Butterspy asks.
>"He loved to cook. He wasn't the kind of pony to sit around watching sports or working on his cart. He was always in the kitchen, hard at work on some new recipe or trying to sell whatever idea he'd been 'inspired' to try that day. So, the house would always smell nice. Especially around holidays. Every time there was a special occasion, he'd make a huge feast for us, with all those fancy exotic ingredients from around Equestria... Fresh tropical fruits, spices that cost ten bits an ounce, fancy desserts with names no pony can pronounce right...!"
Holiday sighs wistfully and stares down into her tea. She can see her reflection in it, looking back up at her. She pushes it away.

>Like I said before, I wasn't the best kid. In fact, I still wonder sometimes why I didn't wind up on some pony else's doorstep, or in an orphanage.
>Hell, maybe that happened, and I was just too young to remember it.
>Anyway, while my dad tried his best to be patient with me when I acted up, that b-... um, my mom took a more direct approach.
>She believed that what I needed was good hard discipline. Every time I caused problems for her and Dad wasn't around to referee, she'd give me the old horseshoe to the hiney, or send me to bed without dinner, or send me outside and not let me back in the house until I 'learned my lesson.'"
Gutter Pup and Gusterfry look shocked by this.
>"Ever since I was little, Mom and Dad would argue about the best way to handle me... Dad insisted that TLC might take awhile, but it'd eventually get me to straighten up and fly right. But Mom said the school of hard knocks worked for her, and her mom, and her grandma, and all the way back as far as she could remember, and she thought- no, she KNEW it'd work on me, too. And the more they had that argument, the more intensely she believed it. And at some point along the way, I think Dad started to believe it, too. But he didn't want to accept that. He'd never lay a hoof on me. He just wasn't that type of pony. And no matter how much shit he caught from Mom about it, he still tried to stick up for me. And that would start the argument all over again. It wore them both down so much... By the time I was 12, they could barely stand to be in the same room as each other anymore."

>"They finalized their divorce a few weeks later. I begged and pleaded them not to. I promised I'd be a better girl. I swore up and down that I'd focus on my schoolwork and try to make friends. But it was too little, too late. And the worst part is that Mom took my begging as her ultimate proof that she was right.
>'See, Tres?,' she said. 'Years of your soft, wishy-washy parenting and nothing happens. But an ultimatum - putting the fear of Celestia into her - and she falls in line instantly!'"
"That's horrible!" Shuttersky says sadly.
>"That prick judge disagreed. Dad didn't stand a chance at the hearing... He looked like a broken stallion. I don't think he even had a real lawyer. Meanwhile, Mom had one of the best in Canterlot... No surprise, but she earned custody of me, and when the divorce was over and done with, she got the house, too. Not that she could keep it with just her salary, especially after that shark took his cut... We moved out near the end of the year. I made her promise to give Dad out new address so we could keep in touch.

Holiday Special looks up at Gutter Pup.

"Miss Holiday...?" Gutter Pup interjects. "If you'd rather be alone than have me sleep on your couch and work in your workshop, then that's okay, too. I can go back to sleeping in the garbage can."
"A garbage can?" Sputterski echoes, eyes wide. "You sleep in a garbage can?"
"It's very comfortable when you crawl in it the right way...!" Gutter Pup insists. "And it keeps the wind out on cold nights. And sometimes there's even stuff to eat in it, too...!"

We brought a cart over so it's not like it'd be much of a hassle.

>"GIVE IT NOW! ...I mean, Hell yeah. In case you haven't noticed, I love free shit. Thanks, uh... what did you say your name was again?"
"I-it's Fluttershy." the pegasus responds as she and Gutter Pup get up.
>"Fluttershy... You know what? I'll remember that."
"Really? Oh, thank you very much!" Flustershy answers, smiling sweetly. "I'll go get it for you now."
>"Alright, yeah, just load it up on the cart, thanks."
"Um, of course." The rabbit gives Holiday a dirty look, but he follows his meal ticket out the back door anyway. Holiday flashes Gutter Pup a grin.
>"Nice work, kiddo. You just scored a free bed. Maybe you're learning from me after all."
"I am...?" he answers. "I didn't even mean to do that."
>"Then I guess you're a natural! 'Atta boy, kiddo!"
Outside, Holiday inspects the bail of hay that Butterfly has loaded onto her cart.
>'Soft, but dry. Nice smell, in-date, golden color... This is some primo shit right here.'

Sweet dreams Inept.
>>
Should we let the thread die?
>>
>>26868486
Yes
>>
>>26868486
Yes.
With only 30 some posts left and bumpanons inability to clean up after himself this thread won't last till tomorrow anyway.
Even if it does, there won't be enough posts left over to keep it alive while it runs.
>>
>>26868513
Could be turned into Q&A.

Inept has either gone to bed or is busy playing hat fortress.
This thread is dead, just let it go, anon.
