Discussion?

Fallout 4 has made it more of a thing but with food items being made to not just heal but give effects, could it be possible that in the wasteland of FoE, things were radiated to have mutations that would cause an effect to a user. Like making them feel stronger or making then feel more alive after consuming it.
>>
>>26012848
No
>>
>>26012848
>making then feel more alive after consuming it.
Only chocolate does this, and in the wasteland the only way to get chocolate is snack cakes.

And the tyrant Sunfall takes all the snack cakes for herself.

So assuming pegasi like Sapphire and Murky along with the other fics were to be ongoing when Operation Cauterize was being planned, how does this change things?

I think it makes their mass extermination plans more justified, as they seek to erase all pegasi that exist groundside.

Otoh I see that the plan would change quite a bit in the face that these pegasi are rather more prevalent than the 2 dashites we had in the original, and consequently the Enclave would be far more aware of the issue, perhaps restricting their strikes far more to just the MOA and Dashites to avoid causing them to come upstairs as it were.

Heh.
As for change, I doubt it would have changed much. The Enclave overestimated themselves. I'm sure they'd have put more priority on dashites, but ultimately considered them a nonissue.

So thoughts on Murky story 1 Yes I read the footnotes.

We already discussed that Murky is more butler or man servant than slave, but I think it should be repeated.

Most people forget he has saddlebags/ had saddlebags to carry his journal when arting him.

Miracle DJPON3 is really overused. For the love of me and readers, please people, use other radio hosts. Hell have them whine that nobody listens to them after that big mouth in Tenpony came online. Datte gets 10 points for not doing this.

For all the surprise talk of Murky being a pegasus, Fuzzy, you laid it on to heavily with the attention to the skycarts, the dream to fly, and the constant gerkin adjusting. I'm also amazed that his owners apparently never tried to take it off.

Wait, bound clothes, green skin?
Murky is a super mutant!
Or a fairly foolish gretchin for not mastering sign language. He could certainly carry a few more than a normal gretchen.

I get that wicked slit is to be a hell bitch, but when your vital human resources are collapsing of heat stroke, its time to change practice, not complain that they can't even respond and may in fact be a bit cooked at this point. Its rather a detriment to the point of her being so devoted she can calculate the delay of an hour instead of 10 minutes that she doesn't have some method set up to prevent such a loss, particularly as she is then all too happy to just flat dismiss them entirely.

Red Eye was like Pol Pot. The only reason his horribly run slavery 'empire' was able to keep afloat was because The Twilight Society kept them going and funded them.
>>
>>26018107
I like the idea that it was just like industrial revolution Britain in there, complete with child labor and dashing of hard slavery.
That its such a harsh and terrifying thing, many question if its a worthy thing or some sadistic hellhole for his own amusement.
Its just since they stockpile and keep all the gear in the place until the last month when they move on Everfree, nobody realizes just how much he has done.
>>
>>26018262
Red Eye didn't sell any of his goods or traded to anyone, had to pay Slavers a lot of caps for the slaves, then feed and house them. Not really comparable.
>>
>>26018329
Aside from the lack of output, which raises the question of where all those caps came from, its actually fairly comparable.
Early industrial revolution was a horrible thing, quite close to slavery, with company script and worse.
Hell they even had lethal smog in London that made people drop dead in the streets.
China hasn't even managed that!

For either a sidefic or writefag/cyoa's sake, any general ideas how to parallel content of Fallout 4 into the setting of post-megaspell Equestria and having the outcome play out differently to avoid carbon pasting? And I don't mean the main story, moreso the side material like:
-The general depiction of The Gunners aside from universally hostile npc much in the same way Kkat played with how the Talons are portrayed.
-The periodic skirmishes between The Gunners and the Children of the Atom
-The raider Red Tourette whose sister was kidnapped by a rival raider gang
-The running conversations between raiders where they are dumb-stuck at the sight of a wandering wastelander who makes gunfire, grenade and motorcycle sound effects and impressions
-The Deathclaw massacring the group of Gunners at the Museum of Witchcraft, which I guess you can play it up as a Hellhound rescuing one of her cubs.
-The USS Constitution
-The Treasure of Jamaica Plain
-The ghoul child trapped 200 years in a fridge
-etc

Just thinking about how Silver Bell was the parallel of Sierra Petrovita with the obsessive collecting but things but it was a depressing context with Silver Bell. How Eldar Cottage Cheese could be compared with Elijah and bits of Mr House but the confrontation with him took place far away from Canterlot.
>>
>>26019085
The USS Constitution quest could be swapped for them recovering a warship, and be made much deeper.

Its not just some entertaining side bit of giving them a AAA roadside call, but an actual question on sapience and its emergence in the robots.
They're seeking to go somewhere else, to get on the seas and perhaps travel to the zebralands, beleiving nothing lives there.
They've seen too many of their fellow bots cut down for being overactive programs, scrapped for parts while screeching "I still function, I still function."
They just want to get away from it all and live a life in peace.
But, some of them have loyalty bolts they desperately want removed, things that make them hail Celestia every few hours, and lock them here.

Of course, on the other hand, its a lot of nice salvage there if you just shoot them. Their programming keeping them from returning fire at all...

>MC contends against rising changeling threat in the wasteland who are replacing and impersonating inhabitants, Gen-I standard drones but intensely debilitated by radiation to the point it destroys their higher brain function, Gen II more evolved to be resistant to transformation-debilitating radiation and screening but still disrupted if accumulated too much, with whom their Gen-III breeds are designed to be genetically ponies when they are born, molting into changeling forms when their mission is complete but at the risk of them achieving independent thought.
>MC finds a way to track the changelings to their hidden hideout, but is shocked when they comes across nothing but crystal architecture instead of a hive, the inhabitants appearing to have a strange mutation where their coat and hair have a perpetual jeweled sheen.
>Crystal Empire entrusted during the war to eliminate and annex changeling threat to deny Zebra's potential allies, replicates Sombra's curse to escape the balefire bombings and hiding them in a pocket world. Comes to artificially engineer changelings to expunge all information of Crystal Ponies existence over the centuries to mitigate raiders and looters.
>Recent leadership strives to save Equestria and guide them so they do not grow to repeat the mistakes of the past. The dubious part of the good intentions being 'The Empire' being willing to alter and fabricate past history so that Equestrians will be beholden to The Empire over the generations. The MC needing to decide if they want to trade the freedom of truth for security.

Wasteland Economics

Sorry for the other anon for being fucking retarded and abbreviating it out for new people. Seriously, was in the same boat when I asked and got the same suggestion in the same form.

I would recommend it as well.
>>
>>26024304
Wasteland Economics? It's fairly popular in this thread. Decent protag and relatively good story for now, pretty good villain.

More of a non-combat protagonist so it's a bit different compared to many other fics. Also, it has swamps, lots and lots of swamps if that floats your boat. Sorta different angle than many other fics take since the protag is on the weaker end of the power spectrum as well as being fairly non-combat. People have pretty good expectations for it going forward.

It's about like a weapons/armor/item smith in a harsh environment.

I'm not sure how healthy it is to pander to fandom memes. Outlaw's gang of Boopers is a pretty on-the-nose example (no pun intended), while Sisters' new chapter features a ghoulified Flufflepuff.

So what is the value of Wicked Slit dumping heat stroke stricken slaves into the molten metal?
Aside from her just delighting in such cruelty, shouldn't it change the composition from the sudden cooling and large amount of carbon and other additives introduced?
That seems like a rather amateur mistake, she'd do better to throw them into the fire under the crucible and leth burn that way without tainting the production run.

And Fuzzy, pulls gerking tight, you really need to, pulls gerkin tight, stop having Murky, pulls gerkin tight, pull his gerkin tight. Its distracting, pulls gerkin tight.

The Gunners of Equestria could be a renegade splinter of the Talons, where they take every contract no matter the long term ramifications and perform excessive execution of orders for the thrill of a power trip while The Talons honor select contracts to the letter. Could go to the point their behavior is like The Forged (The psychopathic splinter of FO4's Gunners, even by their standards) with only the most minimum social etiquette to conduct mercenary work. Their ranks comprising of former Talons discharged for violent misconduct, chem abuse, and instability.

The Foals of Atom, in a similar but diverging path from 3/4's depiction, would come to believe that radiation itself allows a path to ascension (with the infrequently observed mutated perks) and interpreting ghoulification as a gift. Otherwise harmless (if fervently stupid) as they keep to themselves until somepony contracts the Gunners to relocate them out of a region to set up a scavenging operation, an order the Gunners liberally interpreted as relocating the cultists to their graves. At this point the once peaceful Foals of Atom weaponized radiation to fight a long contested battle with the Gunners, both sides eventually attacking both wastelander and traders alike to deny supplies to the each other and because of an incident in the past they disguise as wastelanders to set up ambushes.

The MC is left with a choice whether to side with The Gunners, Foals of Atom, or have the client redraft the contract to hire Talons properly to wipe out the Gunners and resettle the cultists as was originally planned.
>>
>>26029547
Thought the Forge was just a bunch of raiders who happen to like fire. They just only got some Gunners to join them.
>>
>>26029547
Also to add that we don't even see the Talons at all in the Commonwealth can help lead that the Gunners could be a group that ended up forming itself. For instance we can think they came from Vault 75 or got insperation from it.
>>
>>26029547
>Allow the Gunners to win, they renege on their customer's contract and devolve into uncontested Forged-like behavior of the region, the benefit of you receiving weekly shares from caravans and settlements they raid and strong-arm.
>Allow the Foals of Atom to win, their hardened ordeal from the climatic battle hardened them to be more dogmatic in their approach, and executing anypony who doesn't conform to their religion. The MC being the exception and held as a false religious idol to spur their cult.
>Complete a long chain of assignments to inform the client how counter-productive the Gunners are, and enlisting either a legitimate Talon group, Steel Rangers, or a parallel's of the MC's Minutemares to wipe out the Gunners before they become too powerful, and relocate the cultists as planned. While some are unhappy, The Foals of Atom are kept under control and do not become dogmatic fanatics.

There's a splitting pain in your skull and a dry, crusty feeling in your mane as you blink into wakefulness. Why the hell is everything upside down? Movement in the corner of your vision attracts your attention and little voices begin to break past the ringing in your ears.

The last thing you remembered was digging through a schoolhouse in some tiny, no where town when you discovered a trap door in a utility closet. Then it all went black.

Nice work idiot, you got jumped, and probably by some crazy raiders. Maybe you could talk your way out of this? You'd need to get the cloth gag tied around your muzzle off first, but it looked frayed enough to work. It also seems to be really poorly tied, it came right off... Weird.

You take a look around and find that you were in what must have been the basement. Strange depictions painted with hooves- small hooves in fact, were spread liberally around the walls of the room. Things were getting stranger by the second, none of these were bloody or visceral like usual raiders.

"Attention!" A small, squeaky voice cried out. You tried to look around discreetly until something poked your side rather hard.

"Yowch!" You started, your ruse now shattered. Perhaps you should just go with the confident scheme.

"Watch it you ugly trooaaaaahhhhaaa- you are not a raider..." you said, finding your jaw slack.

To your left was a young filly holding a pointy stick in your direction and menacing you. Looking further back showed several others, younger and older, dressed in scraps no doubt from around the school, being lectured about "Big Meanies" by another filly wielding a ruler.

Well that explains the little hoof paintings.

What do?

How would Calamity's family dynamics change if he was the only sister out of the brothers?
Would the new she be looked down upon more for being daddy's little girl, and thus be better driven to trying to excel at opportunities?
Would the brothers be less antagonistic, given that they might now feel more protective of their sister rather than feeling its just another male to compete with?
When it comes to leaving the Enclave, would there be a different set of events leading to it? Such as she doesn't get to keep the armor and has more issues on the ground due to being considered more of a liability?

How? tell me how a giant chunck of rifle with a knife on it is less reliable then a different shaped chunck of wood or iron withouth knife?

I looked up some shit and possibly found one very massive technological plot hole that was probably handwaved with magic. Perhaps even a paradox? With things as they were, how often was oil (crude, for petrochems, etc.) mentioned? wasn't it mostly coal and gems?

In this manner, literally the only reason for oil would be to clean guns/make plastics if they were so focused on the coal. Even so, the resources to extract such shit could have been destroyed, fallen into disrepair, and not to mention the knowledge on how to operate the stuff.

If this is true, I'd like to conclude gun maintenance went the way of magic or alchemy, meaning the art is likely still alive after the war. While homemade lubricant could be made with transmission oil, graphite, light powdered solvents abraxo?, it's easier to just handwave it to alchemy if oil wasn't a major part of this whole thing.

TL;DR
>If gun maintenance wasn't magical or alchemical, it'd need oil.
>if oil existed, Equestria probably wouldn't need coal
>if they didn't need coal the war would've been stupid as shit

Phoenix coal was a thing in the original.
Coal that never ran out or stopped burning.

Not yet (they're only in their 60's,, but I should clarify. The arguement against guns in the wasteland, as I understand it, is the
>implication
that no weapon would be maintained, no means for it to be maintained, and the science in-universe would be too dead to create new items or methods of maintenance. The science of all of this can be relocated and replicated, especially with schematics that can be stored, survivors with the knowledge, and even production areas that had surviving bits. Even new industrial and production shit could be developed, if Red Eye is any indication. Gunsmithing is much lower on the scale of requirements than what Red Eye did as well. You can be damn well sure that if someone knows what a gun is, someone else the science behind it, and another guy has the parts, they'll find a way to make a gun- just like a nailbat. A crowbar would totally survive these same conditions that ranged weapons are subject to, eh?

In addition, the idea of this age argument also means everything else "neat" in the universe, like power armor and MEW's, would not exist because they likely had a really high maintenance requirement and conditions of it's creation were likely lost. This is also neglectful of the idea of a faction like the Gunrunners, and would simultaneously eliminate the entirety of the BoS/SR. Hell, in fallout 1 there is a guy that found a manual for hardening power armor, and if you get him a set it basically turns you invincible. He can also power-tune your plasma caster into a death machine.

Basically, the point being made against guns is killing half the fun by saying "yur side wuldn't real, tho" when there are plenty of ways these things could work, it's just nobody wants to acknowledge or utilize them, or others even works against guns existing for some reason.

Imagine if Alloy Shaper was a gunsmith?

TL;DR
>Fuck you and your mary sue melee build
>>
>>26040586
The same universe that enables your guns also canonizes melee weapon usage even during the war, but you apparently feel the need to tip your fedora to the very thought. You're as much a killjoy as anyone else.
>>
>>26040586
I never argued against melee weapons, I merely argued for guns existing if melee weapons exist too. And preferring guns if both exist.

Fuck your mary sue melee build.

There is however a line though.
Stuff like tube artillery and in fact most artillery in general would be around and making mincemeat of the rabble rousers we see in fics.
Whether it be a simple trebuchet or just a field howitzer, they have a significant impact on how the stories play out.
Especially if start handing out mortars or have somebody with ballistics calcs just propping up some missile packs and firing them at an angle.
>>
>>26040100
Do you have a link for me to send it to?
>>
>>26040701
Yup, but he's got a gun too. The good part about something like a cudgel is that you can just pick up another one (guess what happens to his, and what he does). It's funny because the shovel is modeled after old trench tools, which soldiers would sharpen into makeshift axes. It was also the first weapon Lil' Pip used and promptly broke.

>>26040888
>Stuff like tube artillery and in fact most artillery in general would be around and making mincemeat of the rabble rousers we see in fics.
Hell yes. Remember that run to Nellis Air Force base? Remember how psychopathic it seemed to even try? Imagine if they had flak guns and the Enclave tried to hit.

>Especially if start handing out mortars or have somebody with ballistics calcs just propping up some missile packs and firing them at an angle.
Kind of like what the ghouls did in the rocket testing facility, only another good point on weapons. I use a pitching machine that takes grenades.

I would like to say that overall, though, use the right tool for a situation. If someone is in your personal bubble, a knife is going to be much better than an anti-material rifle that weighs 30 pounds, is nearly 5 feet long, and only has a scope sighted for things at least a football field away. A sawed off or even handgun might trump the knife, though. The most important thing I can say though, is make it logical in reference to the story and how the combat plays out. If there's a firefight breaking out, the guy isn't gonna make it through no-man's-land with a shovel, he's going to have to pick up a gun, do something mary-sue-ish, or something else than going in head on.

On a different note, what about armor? What kind of stuff for that still exists?
>>
>>26041246
My point was you can't have artillery and other big guns without things going wrong in terms of narrative.
Like if you have combat, the artillery will shit all over it.
You try and have a story like WECON with a threat of raiders, they better have artillery as well or armor good enough to tank it.

That's what I'm saying, its the same as why you rarely see artillery in fiction, its boring effective stuff that reduces the target characters to craters.

yup, use the right tool for the job. it arrives in a different way too, though. If you're on the shooting end, it's boring and effective. If you're on the receiving end, you suddenly have tons of shit to do to give yourself a fighting chance against it. Getting pegasi to map the area for approaches, having to earn the caps to pay them off cause they're not cheap, possibly finding a traitor that left the group that knows blind spots (which involves creating a new character), that sort of thing. If it can add to the story without power creep (that's the hard part), it can be worthwhile.
>>
>>26042175
Meh, it's seems very predictable and dull from either end though. If you're inside then someone's inevitably going to try bypass or sabotage it. If they fail then queue generic find-who-done-it quest. If they succeed then the town will get its shit pushed in as they have little else in the way of defense because "oh we're so safe behind our artillery so why bother?". If you're outside then you'll just end up finding some way in that turns out to be super dangerous anyway. A tunnel full of ghouls or a secret path that ain't so secret after all.

Outlaw original had artillery if I recall, amd Frozen Skies has that chekov's gun of Neighson just sitting around. I'd hazard a guess that either or both are gonna get to their artillery points eventually.

It takes skill to use. Not like ponies can just see where the hell they're shooting if the thing's many kilometers away. At some point you need a spotter. Spotters are very killable, but by necessity highly trained individuals. Poor ones don't call strikes in right. Even worse ones accidentally call in rounds on themselves. It ain't an easy learning curve. You need supporting gear. Radios, accurate maps, atmospherics. A lack of any of those can be used to limit the effectiveness of artillery, you just gotta know how to write around it. Don't think directly, think about what it needs to work, and target the vulnerable parts.
>>
>>26042804
>Don't think directly, think about what it needs to work, and target the vulnerable parts.

Hey. Hey thread. that's one major thing to writing, only apply it to your feels.
>>
>>26042804
However, for a number of these discussions simple area barrages will suffice. There aren't many concrete blockhouses being demolished so much as areas that need shrapnel and a softening bombardment.

Not many ponies wear armor, its mostly either steel rangers that would require high end munitions that might very well not exist like EFP or DPICM or nudie ponies that aren't even able to resist a stiff breeze.

This leads to the same issue when ponies start peckering each other with full rifle rounds, they start losing limbs and dying there, much less the issue that intermediate cartridge automatics and even pistol rounds are a significant threat.

Essentially, ponies would drop to medieval weaponry with little issue, let alone being tagged with a bullet or dozen as people like to depict. This greatly reduces the potential for drawn out combat and leads far more to single massive aggressors ala Tofu and the minotaur, brief and lethal as with Frozen Skies and the Lack of Deaths team, WECON and Ham's wildlife only combat (aside from short sharp decisive moments).
Things such as Ouroboros and its multiple minigun wielding raiders, PH and its oh dear fucking god you had to put how bullshitium here?, the original with Pip's constant shot and fade to blacks of blood loss, they're all the mark of fucktard writing for trying to have so many casualty causing weapons and a distinct lack of them.

For reference, look at how fucking terrifying machine gun positions were in WW1 and 2. Eventually it came down to needing artillery and air power to crack them, where single MG nests could control hundreds of meters of front.

from what I've seen, most fans started on 3, and think that's the "bee's knees." or so they would say. They then proceed to ignore the older, more interesting and far more vast levels of shit.

something I liked. according to the timeline, if 3 is included, there are 3 different BoS factions. the west coast, which is the 'standard' miltary xenophobes, the 'midwest', which was an isolated group and survived via including/training outsiders, and the east, which came about because "fuck you I'm Todd and I want a way for players to be forced to be the good guys and have power armor while still referencing the franchise we bought."

I'm sure they all have their own unique fears, but the more generalized fears would be things like their pretty captives getting away and running out of booze/drugs.

>What do Raiders fear?

Their deepest fear is not that they are inadequate. Theirr deepest fear is that they are powerful beyond measure. It is theirr light, not their darkness that most frightens them. They ask themselves, Who are they to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous? Actually, who are they not to be? They are a child of Balefire. Their playing small does not serve the wasteland. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other ponies will not feel insecure around them. They are all meant to shine, as Shining Ones do. They were born to make manifest the glory of Balefire that is within them. It is not just in some of them; it is in everypone and as they let their own light shine, they unconsciously give others permission to do the same. As they are liberated from their own fear, their presence automatically liberates others

Outlaws thoughts:
Much better with Caltrop this time, she now has a place that is already in the world, as opposed to her previous spontaneous existence.Making her a ganger more than a raider is also a nice touch, though the point that she still is a raider is nice.

Mach is and still remains an asshole. One who is quickly learning there are bigger and more killy things out there than him, that have little reason to put up with him.

The ships and extended trade empire is nice, it makes it feel more alive and connected than just, here be Sanctuary, gaze upon it and wonder why the hell its here ye poor minded mortals.

Greaser's diagnostic spell is fun, how long until she breaks the universe with it I wonder?

Krieg is actually nicer this time around, Mach managed to escape without even a bruise.

Have you accepted Trixie as your lord and saviour yet unicorns? She is a great and powerful deity, that can give you wings!

Caltrop's spontaneity and reticence to become involved with people or places was a big part of her characterisation in the first draft. It's one of the reasons she was such an interesting character. It remains to be seen if taking away that willful denial of comfort and complacency will alter her worth as a unique character.

Murky Number Seven story 2 ramblings:
So if Sooty is able to buy off the guards so well, what exactly is keeping him under thumb as it were? Does he have blackmail material, or is it more he buys off the guard or two that were supposed to look after him, and he suddenly falls off the books?
Otherwise it seems more like at any point the guards could just walk in and declare it null and void, a transfer order could come in, or even just a fight like what Noose did could occur and insta kill him.

I really wasn't expecting much on the pegasus reveal, but wow I am actually disappointed here. Nobody has ever checked beneath the gherkin before? But Wicked Slit gave him a nice thin cut on his back per story 1.
So how did she not figure it out then?
Further, shouldn't his previous masters have known what he was when they inspected him?It seems to actually be a bit contrived that nobody knew murky was a pegasus.

Chainlink Shackles just killing another slaver's slave is a bit at odds. That seems to go back up with Wicked Slit vatting the three, its at odds with the concept that the slaves are valuable and needed, instead putting it more that the slaves aren't so valuable and can be killed freely. Which then messes with the whole true believer thing and Red Eyes promise.

I suppose this fits though since the guards employ live ammo in breaking up the fights, as opposed to rubber bullets and other methods.

A question, how do the slavers not die from the horrible air? Are they nursing healing potions every so often, or are only the slaves going into the unventilated areas?
>>
>>26051464
I think Sooty likes being in his current position, and none of the guards fuck with him because he can get them a steady supply of goods that they want (porn, drugs, other questionable stuff) for free.

The pegasus stuff is pretty damn contrived, now that you break it apart like that. Fillydelphia being a giant system could be an excuse; there were too many slaves and too few slavers, so there were rarely any one-on-one interactions during which someone could look under his jerkin. Still, that's pretty contrived.

The slave killing makes sense to me. It shows that Red Eye's slavers aren't as fanatical as you would think, and that he doesn't have much control over the small scale operation of Fillydelphia.

The slavers don't die from the horrible air because they have masks when overseeing the un-ventilated areas. Or at least that's what they had in The Pitt dlc.
>>
>>26052355
Snooty bothers me since as presented, he's too open, too powerful for a slave. How did he get here? It takes caps, time, and risk to arrive in his position, things a Filly slave lacks. Basically, he is so out of place, I am expecting him to be an agent of Red Eye -dont spoil me-. I mean Artery has to keep all his possessions on him, Murky as well. Slaves don't have a locker and yet somehow Sooty keeps his everything safe long enough to get his easy life rolling?

I mean I get why, there's always a character on good terms with the guards and can get contraband in these sort of stories with prisons. Fuzzy was just following that archetype.

For slave killing, that's part of the point. Is it just everyone is bluffing Red Eye on their loyalty, while they would actually all go drinking and talk about how many slaves they killed that day? I mean as presented, only Whiplash seems to care, and then maybe this "Protoge" but he got one sentence mention. As far as slave drivers, none of them are good at all, and the terminal has the issue of Sooty tainting the results with his machinations.
Its more just the rhetoric not matching the words bothers me.
>>
>>26052666
Oh and
The issue with the air is its everywhere, not just the small areas around the forges. So its basically, how do all the slavers get by without issue, when the very air slowly kills you? Or maybe quickly, a 3 month death sentence, is that fast or slow?
I mean cancer is considered slow with years...

Which means the potions must be being made, since that would be a constant drain on resources. That then makes for a different thing, since making potions punts them up quite far.

Really, Filly feels like what the DPROK would be post WW3 and some years. A mad deadly place that is well above its peers and gone from a joke to a very real nightmare. With the real possibility of spilling out and conquering all before it.

Quick, somebody get a DNA sample from UN, we need to make sure he has insufficient Mongol in him!
>>
>>26052666
>>26052705
There's a thing called suspension of disbelief: if you like the story, you're willing to let a few unrealistic things slide for the sake of an interesting story. Of course, it can get to a point where things get too ridiculous to overlook, and the story is broken (PH). I don't think MN7 has ever reached that point for me.

Without spoiling anything, Sooty appears again later in the story, and some of these issues are explained.

The slave killing gets a better explanation as well, though it's not very direct.

I think either I'm confused about what you mean about the air, or you're confused about the air. From what I remember, the air is very shitty in the factories, and less shitty outside, but it's not killing slaves or slavers left and right. I think it only affects Murky because his lungs are fucked up from taint exposure and are very sensitive to radiation, which is what causes him to suffocate when he goes without radaway for too long. Maybe that's the bad air you're thinking of.

What about aspects of the story that you like?
>>
>>26052912
Oh no I got the suspension of disbelief part down, I accept how story 1 goes just right for Murky to see the Lightbringer to do her thing, find the Pipbuck and be able to make it all work out.

Ah okay, so its more of a Murky specific problem that sounded as though it was applied to all ponies. Gotcha.
So far the world building is good, but doesn't feel as much as 30k words seems like it should be. Then again Sager x Sapph is the longest at 7k for me. So this might be a personal thing of me just being too concise with writing, which was something I lost points on in my classes of not embellishing enough. And now you know why I have purple prose and big word issues.

So far there isn't anything really too like I feel. In that the story says a lot, but its not full of things I can like. A background lovingly crafted of wood shavings in layers, but still missing the subject of the picture. Mechanically sound and currently without content. On the other hand, this will change I think in story 3 now that everything is really introduced, the classic issue of trying to start a fic means the first few chapters are all set up and light on things to make art or recursive fanfics of.

Single scene that got me was with Wicked Slit x Murky rumors starting, simply because it was so unexpected and funny.

Him drawing all over the cupboard was also nice, a sign that he isn't Fuzzy's punching bag and a despair sue.

Fuzzy's take on slavery will be interesting to see more of as it develops between slavers, and how much of a difference between them there is.
Such as Whiplash being a dickish master that gets off to Murky suffering more or less, a sadistic stallion. And then this expected Chainlink Shackles of being a god damned fucking monster of rules, the sort where you will suffer but find new meaning in life from the pain.

And then Wicked Slit, who really needs to have somebody jam the hilt of knife up her slit and

Actually, when you think about it, both Steel Rangers and their videogame contemporaries are descended from their country's national armies, which rather than recruit outside over the centuries aside from extenuating circumstances are more likely to recruit among their own, you're born and die a Steel Ranger, in short.

The food/drink theme is essentially the function of a legal surname despite the flexible vocabulary to choose from. And on a subconscious level, Steel Rangers in the present age and have some comfort of mind of having a connection of a ancestor soldier or officer of the Equestian Military who bore a similar name.
>>
>>26055790
Steel Rangers are more inbred than Stable 2.
>>
>>26055608
>>26055790
That was what I thought of it, sort of. It's become a tradition of theirs to give their kids food names, and it shows that their lives are more comfortable than that of the average waster.

>>26056197
It's possible that sometimes they adopt young children and raise them as steel rangers. I'd like to think they're not so heartless as to leave a helpless foal after they've killed her parents or something horrible.

They only adopt the child if the parents drop good loot.

New Chapter of Homelands is up.

http://www.fimfiction.net/chapter/894824
>>
>>26057385
Hey.

Hey Somber.

Is that you?

You know what you should do, Somber?

You should totally start over fresh and write a Fallout Equestria sidestory outside of the continuity of PH. Give it a likeable main character (like Blackjack in the early days), a focused, well planned plot of reasonable length that has a beginning and an end, and avoid going off-the-rails over-the-top ridiculous with it.

I'm serious. It would be nice to see what you're capable of producing if you leave PH's fucked up continuity behind and start fresh with something new. Hell, what's stopping me from reading Homelands isn't that it's written by you, but that it's part of PH's legacy.
>>
>>26057506

I'm trying to write different stuff that isn't MLP but it sucks. And I'm not sure I should write FoE or MLP anymore. I can write Homelands. I can get the story out. So that's what I write.

I can't do anything else. I wish to fuck that I could, but I can't. Sorry. I'll go the fuck away.

So /foe/: antagonists. When do you think is the best time to introduce the main antagonist in a fic? Fics like MN7 and WEcon introduce their main antagonist very early, and quickly establish some sort of goal for them. Malice wants Copper, Shackles wants Murky. I guess it's just coincidence that they're both slavers. While other fics like Outlaw or The Things We've Handed Down hold off on introducing their main antagonist, and instead give us a lesser antagonist. Outlaw has that guy in the spooky armor and Gust and Gale, and TTWHD has Plum Pudding and Muckraker(?). And I guess there's some fics that haven't introduced any notable antagonists yet, like Frozen Skies.

What do you like best? Antagonists established early, or at a midpoint in the story? I personally prefer the former; I think it drives the story along best.
>>
>>26058722
Hmmm. I think either can work. I like a more midpoint antag so the MC has developed a bit by the time we actually see them. Otherwise the MC hasn't had much fleshing out done with their character, desires, and goals.

Also you are posting this quite late at night for what is mainly an American/Canadian general.
>>
It's a difference between escalating antagonists and ultimate antagonists. PH is written with escalating antagonists where each one is supposed to be an ever greater challenge to Blackjack. FoE is written in (semi) untimate antagonists where we're told about Red Eye fairly early on, meet him, and it's made clear that he's intended to be the final challege to LP. FoE could have gone with a triumverate, in which LP could have played A against B, B against C, and C against A. It would have been interesting. Instead, LP handles all three rather handily, without that much difficulty. LP's primary challenges then are more nebulous rather than active antagonists, such as the wasteland and LP herself.
>>
>>26057385
Okay, I think that's enough.

Ham, Tofu, Sprocket, Arowid, and now even Somber have updated before I have.

Got to stop procrastinating. It's getting embarrassing.
>>
>>26059081
Don't forget Relentless!
>>
>>26059086
Aw man, it got worse!
>>
>>26058722
What about introducing a character who becomes a large antagonist later on? Something along the lines of an authority figure betraying a former employee. They would appear fairly early in the story, but their actions would be mostly background noise and then come to a head towards the end.
>>
>>26059081
Hey, at least Bobulator hasn't.
If he updates and you haven't, then thou art not just lazy, but super lazy.

Its like lazy, but you're keyboard has a thick layer of dust on it instead of cum.

So do wasteland ponies ever get pathetically depressed with their mundane, day to day, try to eat drink and not get eaten/murdered/sold into slavery lives?

Let me try to narrow that down, We have a pone who pretty much lives alone, but in a community, does odd jobs and scavenging for caps and food/water and pretty much NOTHING else. Every day he gets up for the sole purpose of living until the next day.

That's where a lot of the first world is today.
Humorously, the less developed world can get by on less due to not having bought so heavily into the capitalist mantra of "I will be a millionaire someday if I work hard enough."
On the other hand, we have to live a lot closer to the whole don't get murdered part, but it makes life more interesting.

No its the desire to constantly deny yourself pleasure believing you need to fake it. Buying gourmet shit instead of cooking, driving cars you can't even pay for maintenance, Ishit, designer clothes and preening products that scare peacocks.

You're not going to be a millionaire on the 35k and less you make, don't bother faking and pretending.
Spend a few months living like a "commie" and you can at least afford enough to pay down some of that debt hole you've gotten yourself into and stay out of a worse place than a Belarusian bloc.
You'd rather lie and hurt your kids than admit that such a life will never be yours or theirs.

If you're gonna call me out on strawmanning the least you could do is not the same damn thing.

You keep attacking capitalism like it's the source of the problem when it's not. Even Socialists have made tons of money off capitalism, just go look at Bill Gates and some of the shit he's said in the last year. I was pointing out that MONEY doesn't make you happy. Capitalism =/= Mass accumulation of currency.
I don't wake up, look in the mirror and sing this "mantra" you point at like it's some kind of prayer the "Big Corporations" use that so many anti-capitalists just LOVE to blame for the worlds' problems.

admittedly I don't know what your stance is but it sounds like you have a bone to pick with an economic system that has routinely built great things including countries and countless innovations.

Mentioned it a while ago, now I'm back.

We're running a homebrew tabletop rpg set in the FoE universe. We'll be playing as humans in a vault that ended up in equestria because reasons.

We need two to three more players to fill out the group, so whoever's interested add me on skype. We'll drag you into a call, talk a bit, and then move on to the next person.

The tone of the game is reminiscent of Fallout itself. It'll vary from serious to funny, but it's not completely one or the other at all times.

Yes, we're screening for edgelords and complete turbo autists. We're all autistic here, but there are limits. No cam required, but you have to have voice for out of character communication. Actual play will all be in text.

If you're interested, add me using the info below.

Sooo smokers in the wasteland.

I have a feeling that it may tend to show up as more a flavor of cool in a fic rather than say, a vice of a particular character, but does anyone wonder or put thought into where these come from?

Are all cigarettes scavenged and taste like ass? Or could there be some ponies who roll their own cigarettes with some kind of Wasteland Tobacco plant.

Pretty much. Even provoked, most of us have things we're just not willing to do.
The alicorns were peaceful in that they wanted ponies alive, and while not openly hostile at first, their demands are very aggressive.
You're really putting someone on the spot when you force them to choose between a difficult fight or giving up their free will.
>>
>>26083561
The other part is Stable Dwellers are rare. Of the ones Pip went into, only Canterlot had survivors.
So its a distinct possibility the alicorn just saw somebody who roomed in a stable and took the barding.
Thus the standard practice of wasteland threatening makes sense.
After all, its not wrong to be an African warlord on the Savannah when you are one.
By the same token, Pip was in Old Apploosa, a place that was Red Eye owned, something sane people steered away from, even before mentioning the slavery issue.
>>
>>26077903
I assume alicorns would have nothing to do with large settlements because they are full of icky heathens that will all be forced into unity when the goddesses final solution gets forced into effect eventually. Im sure they have more useful things to do that to ask if anyone's heard the good news.

The why has tofu made them into Jehovah's shitnesses!?
>>
I think we got a little off track there. The original question was if Tofu's alicorns fit into the original canon. Or, to simplify it, do alicorns ever ask ponies to join, instead of demanding it.
The original does mention willing converts, which implies a level of communication beyond "hey you, get in the bag". If nothing else it's hard to join a group if you can't even find them, which implies alicorns may have been available regularly in a certain area.
On the other hand, the alicorns had a pretty terrible reputation. It's questionable if anyone would allow them to do the Jehovah thing.
>>
>>26083853
to be fair, jehovah's witnesses have a pretty terrible reputation too.

Worth noting - the alicorn doesn't say the forcefeeding line until Pip throws a bunch of mines at her and then starts charging her magic for the boxcar drop. In fact, for the most part the alicorn just stands in the open and gloats for the entire scene, even after her escorts are dead.

It's safe to say that the original FoE's alicorns are not very well written/bright.

Trixie's most glaring character flaws are her arrogance and her need to show off. She knows those landmines won't get through that alicorn's shield, so she takes some time to bask in her own power and taunt Littlepip, a tiny little unicorn just out of a stable.

She didn't see the traincar coming because she didn't believe Pip could do that. She doubts her opponents because she thinks she's so superior, which was also how Pip managed to blow her up with a megaspell.

It does then lead to the question of what makes Little Pip so special here.
About the only thing she was unique in was the megaspell, which quite honestly anybody else who could obtain or launch one would have solved the issue of.
It feels like yet another case of nothing happening until the protagonist wills it so.

It's standard mary sue shit, desu. Within a week Pip goes from a naive technician that's never seen a gun to a master of several exotic weapons. Within a month every major faction in the setting - some of them centuries old - is either allied with her or destroyed, and she's risen to an almost messianic status.

Games have the (small) excuse of being interactive and usually appealing to some level of self-insertion and power fantasy. You don't have to join every guild and resolve every conflict in Skyrim if you don't want to.
>>
>>26086038
>You don't have to join every guild and resolve every conflict in Skyrim if you don't want to
While true, that's like saying you don't have to read every chapter in a book. It's content you've payed for. And if you don't do it then literally nothing ever happens with those groups.

>This is a fact we know all the way to our most primeval roots.
Awkward wording.
The whole first paragraph is kind of dumb.
Seriously, these sentences don't make sense, you're just putting in words to sound smart. Read these sentences out loud and listen to your voice. You'll hear the things that don't belong.
Keep it simple, stupid. There's too much fluff in here. Get to the point. This is a prologue, use it. Introduce your story.
>lore
You're thinking of yore.
>death too his time
>Death
Be consistent with your capitalization.
>Paging Death
That's dumb.
Lern2indent when a character speaks. You can't just slip it in your paragraphs. Or at least, you shouldn't.
>in the illumination of his hoof
lolwut
This is all way too vague. I love me some subtlety, but this is just counterproductive.
>Who am I?
I hope you can hear how hard my eyes just rolled on that.
>tout suite
eugh

The very end was better than the beginning, but you spent so much time trying to set things up. Also, you don't need a prologue. Prologues are stupid. Just start telling your story. There's a story there, but based on what you've written so far, I'm not sure how it'll be.
>>
>>26086578
Please, Bilbo never stops bungling. He spends most of the battle at the end of the book knocked unconscious.
He also spends a much longer time out on his quest than many story protagonists do, so any sort of skills that he develops it is at least more justifiable.
Luke is a bit more of a sue, but not much. He's planning on joining the academy so he's learned how to pilot a ship. He's not an exceptional marksman with a blaster, both Han and Leia think he's just a dumb kid when they first meet. Sure he sinks the thermal port shot, after the trench run, but that's mostly force shenanigans.
I don't get why people get so salty about that mary sues.
>>
>>26086813

Bilbo is still esential in defeating a age old Dragon who almost fully eradicated a whole Dwarf People.
Luke still brings the galaxy-spanning Empire to fall besides starting out as Space Redneck.

Also Pips story goes rather in line with any of the Fallouts.
1: Vaultdude who is probably number 2 undesireable goes to get a waterchip. Outsmarts/eradicades/takes leadership of the biggest most organised Raiderparty around on day 1 or 2 of his journey.
Then he brings the Master and his minions to fall which the Brotherhood wont even get near to their bases, after having been out in the wastes for like a month.

2: You are the choosen one and could argue you have got some trainng. Still you end up defeating the high-tech Enclave and their mutated Ãœbermensch, besides beeing the equivalent of beeing the best of some tribe who are trying to shoot down helicopters with Bow and Arrow.

And so on.

So, I gues you could say Pip is a Mary Sue, but its not like anyone reading a Fallout fic is presented a story here that goes against expectations, or if that isnt a common thing in fiction of any kind.
>>
>>26086603
>>tout suite
>eugh
So I've been wanting to talk about this for a while, since I've seen it in a lot of stories (not just radiation lesbian ones, mind you)/

There needs to be a separation between the author, and either the narrator (if it's third person), or the character (if it's in first).
I will never believe that a wasteland pony knows the phrase, "tout suite". I just won't. It doesn't fit what the diction of the character should be.
Figuring out the voice and vocabulary of a character is very important for the immersion of a story, and a little effort and forethought can go a long way.
>>

>>26086578
Let me clarify what I mean, then.

A mary sue is a character that breaks the established rules of the setting when it suits the author's convenience or preference.

For example, a total novice beating trained experts in a given skill because "they're just that talented". Or an ordinary mortal shrugging off mortal injuries simply because the story would end if they couldn't keep going. Littlepip is an example of both, among other things.

Bilbo plays a vital role in defeating Smaug, but he doesn't whip a death ray out of his ass to do it. He uses his established skills - sneaking and talking his way out of trouble, and relies on other characters to actually kill the dragon. Luke is force-sensitive, which is a pretty big thing in the SW universe, and at least takes some time to train between battles. Even then, he's not especially competent - Vader and Palpatine both easily defeat him.

A better example of a sue might be young Anakin in The Phantom Menace, who successfully builds and flies a world class racing machine and a combat spacefighter before his balls even drop.

[/essay]
>>
>>26087216

It would be better so call a poor character a poor character, and give reasons for such an opinion. That takes critical thinking skills beyond 'I don't like them.'

>>26087263
That's one. Ultra competence is one I see pop up here and there that's rather disappointing. Characters have to fail if they're going to suceed. I never saw young anakin fail, so you might have a point there. Still don't like the term though.
>>
>>26087263

Oh please, Luke goes from shooting whomp-rats to shooting a mancover sized hole withouth target-guiding system at high speeds in a battle with closed eyes in what, two weeks? a Month?

Im not complaining about that, thats just how such stories are. Most people want to ehar about the Hero winning against all odds, not about the chum who died on day three from eating rotten beans.

As I found out when I noticed there's only two radscorpion meats out of the 80 I'm sure I killed. Just something for you guys to keep in mind for you compulsive hoarders.

>>
>>26087314
Luke landing the torpedo shot against the odds was the entire point of the scene, though. He turned off his targeting computer and relied on the force to aim, proving both that the force was real and that Obi-wan's trust was well placed, and allowing Luke to graduate from a reluctant good guy to a genuine hero. It was a moment that had been built up to for the entire film.

I'm not saying that heroes shouldn't succeed. But on the flip side, if the hero's success relies on them breaking the laws of logic or halving the villains' IQ with their mere presence, that's just as bad.

Speak of the devil. On one hand, kinda pisses me off after I did a whole round through all the locations I visited so far after the loot and enemies respawned. But on the other hand it helps with the immersion that of course when you set up a supply line, under supplied town will request to take what the other has in surplus, and so long as they don't take my weapons, fine.

Though makes me wonder what would happen in-universe were a obsessive-compulsive hero who becomes mayor finds out his own citizens were behind his missing stashes of food.
>>
>>26087314
Do you not think young Luke used his Force powers to guide the proton torpedos INTO an EXHAUST PORT that was likely venting as he took the shot? Because it certainly wasn't Luke's marksman skills that made the shot happen, despite basic physics saying the proton torpedos shouldn't have made it as far as they did without veering off course somehow.

Moreover, Mary Sues and Gary Stus aren't just "poorly written characters"; they're characters that other characters in the story cannot hate or find annoying without being seen as wrong for doing so. They're characters that literally do not fail or have shortcomings, handling any challenge thrown at them unrealistically well. People hate these sorts of characters because they are incredibly bland, one-note, one-dimensional... whatever term you want to use. These characters don't provide a story with the external or internal struggle needed to keep a story interesting. As such, while a character like this CAN work as a support for another character's struggle, putting them in the main focus and throwing problems in their face for them to just shrug off is extremely cheap writing that goes nowhere and does nothing; and that's not what a good writer wants to have in their story.
>>

>despite basic physics saying the proton torpedos shouldn't have made it as far as they did without veering off course somehow.

"You what?! YOU WHAT??!!"
"C-calm down, Silver Tongue. That's the deal when you assigned Big Book and all to be your provisioners. And Underhoof, the last town you had agree to join a month back?
"Yeah, I was gonna get to setting up their purifiers but I was BIT PREOCCUPIED following up on my son's kidnappers."
"Well, they were in a real pinch for food. Had a request they only had enough to feed six mouths between twenty of them. And then we found this giant commissary of collected food both old and new you stored with your weapons and armor. After all the good things you did for all the towns, we figured you had them saved up to help the less fortunate settlements. You were gone for about a months...and the food it takes to feed does pile up."
"Celestia boil my balls! You could've given them some mutfruits to plant for themselves. But oh, you wastelanders can't even plant a carrot without my say! Why did you empty all my canned foods and Ponylurk meats instead of surplus of crops you made?"
"Oh...never thought of that...but at least you have 400 mutfruits, right?"

----

>And so, despite Ponyville having been briefly rebuilt a century after the bombings, and many towns sprouting forth in the wake of Silver Tongue's leadership, they all systematically massacred when Silver Tongue, in a fit of rage, massacred his own settlers. And Ponyville once again became a cesspool for raiders.

I only gave what I feel is the purest definition of a Mary Sue / Gary Stu; nothing more and nothing less. I feel the term has been watered down to apply to any character that isn't the literal antithesis of what I described. Apparently, some people will erroneously accuse a character of being Mary Sue-ish until the writer gives them no hope of doing anything right the first time, no hope of garnering any form of respect, and no hope of anything they do truly shaking up the status quo until "the end"; in other words, the archetypical MacFarlane / Hartman character.

>And why did they defy physics, exactly?
Do you know how physics work in space? Do you know what it would take to get a projectile moving in a straight line to pull a 90* turn as fast as it did and still manage to make the target?

That fucking torpedo is going to keep moving straight even if it were to turn to point towards the port. There is no atmosphere in space to slow it down after it rotates. It would have to literally halt direction before accelerating again straight down, otherwise it would tumble and hit the surface.
