Pinkie. My mom is developing Alzheimer's disease, but it's early enough in that she's still herself, mostly. Sometimes she'll forget where she is or what she's doing. Or change the subject with a funny story about a dead relative who, suddenly, she expects to be in the next room.

The most jarring and painful thing is how happy she can be. When the disease first became apparent, I used to explain to her that her husband has passed away. I expected her to be heartbroken about it every day. Instead, she usually laughs.

"I know that, silly! But he comes back sometimes!"

I find this more disturbing than her fits of confused anger.
