My current criticisms of Archipelago is that we have achived our goal that had been set up since the beginning but there was a big twist and so it continues but without much if any direction. A CYOA without direction is not a good thing, just read Heat.

I'd also like to say that with Etherquest (Long Name) there's way too much time between posts I think and I've already voiced my displeasure at the writing format.

Well Joy is teaching Emerald potion making which could be useful. And they are about to leave for some locations. Also there is a dark secret being implied recently. Any of those could become interesting story thread if given the right execution.

I agree that Joy isn't necessarily the problem, the real problem being that the players haven't focused on or taken any real steps towards any particular goal, such as revenge against our parents. If this was done Joy could be made into a useful resource (or if not, forgotten about). Joy only seems like a problem because, in the lack of such a clear goal, the quest has become about Joy instead.

Sticking to her at all is a problem. Teaching emerald should have been a brief affair. There's nothing wrong with what Joyride was supposed to be, she just wasn't it and short of a drastic re-invisioning of her relationships she's just going to continue to be a stall on anything players try to do. No it isn't. Joyride has an established character of not being particularly invested in our goals and wanting re-compensation for everything, typically in a form that consumes player time.

Her current existence right now is a series of sidequests that distract from anything we could be doing and she successfully distracted us from what we were doing.

we HAD direction, we lost it. Primarily because of how joyride as a character functions. You can't just pretend that dumping timesinks on the playerbase had nothing to do with the loss of direction. Just go into the archive and look at how much time has passed in real life compared to in game progress. Of course players lost their goal, there was no progress there because the cost of progress was a). too high and b). muddled with other nonsense. All as a result of how Joyride functions.

Any driving kick we get to progress will always lose its strength while we spend time paying our dues to Joyride to get her to play nice. Look at that big scene with Joyride confronting us over our amulet and look timestamps while that progresses.

It is indeed a fundamental problem to the quest but you're ignoring that joyrides character is built around that flaw as her primary mechanic.

Her existence without changing her character perpetuates that flaw. So unless you're suddenly going to make her super hot and bothered by Emeralds treatment and suddenly become massively supportive of the players, then she's going to persist in embodying that flaw by being a drain on player focus/time. Her 'I don't care/pay me' persona has to change or be neutered to the extent that 'payment' is virtually non-existent in terms of what players are required to do.

I agree that Joyride is a distraction. The only reason a distraction works is if you don't have a good enough focus. If players continued playing along with Joyrides sidequests after we actually had a focus and an avenue to pursue it, I'd agree that something needs to be changed. So far, however, her being a problem is based on the greater flaw and would likely evaporate without it.

To rephrase the core problem:
Drive: Get away from parents to safety
Solution: Get safe
Drive: Get revenge on parents
Solution: ???
