ITT: MLP:FiM fanfictions, on-topic discussions, off-topic discussions, Regidar killing himself today but will resume writing tomorrow, Not paying attention to what page we're on, prostitution raids, not reading horsewords for 3 years and wanting to get back into it because reasons, voiceguy needs a good jenkem recipie, debating fics you read 2 years ago, and writing a rainbow factory knockoff thats even worse than the original.

Tired of the same old 'Human goes to Equestria to fuck his herd of underage waifus' formula? Burnt out after reading that Fallout crossover? Well, we've compiled the best of the worst in order to bring you our absolute average!

Instead of sitting there and taking it like a bitch at the end of RoH, Discord ducks the friendship laser and counterattacks, banishing the M6. They need to figure out where they were sent and how to get back home.

Its probably dated now, but one of the only memorable 'discord wins' fics that I didnt drop

http://www.fimfiction.net/story/76290/celestia-sleeps-in
I think theres a requirement for this to be mentioned in every thread, so might as well get it out of the way now

Trixie does shit because reasons. Trixie redemption fic. I'm not even sure why its AU, aside from the fact its a side fic to the codes apprentice and I have no idea what thats about

Multiverse M6 think with portals and both sets have to deal with a very different equestria than theyre used to (NMM wins vs canon ponyland)
sadly the third book and its writer is kill

A WW2 vet and his house gets transported to horseland. Ponies wonder what this new creature is, the old guy meets pinkie and believes hes died and gone to hell

The M6 (minus ponk) gets kidnapped and a bunch of new bearers get thrown together because I know how much you enjoy fics that replace the element bearers :^)

>Celestia Sleeps In
Interesting plot idea that gets thrown out the window in favor of a drab first encounter which is, admittedly, done pretty well and fairly realistically. The main problem is, it's fucking boring and has a very slow pacing. It's like reading an actual first contact diplomatic envoy's diary.
>>
>>25848231
>Interesting plot idea that gets thrown out the window in favor of...

Well to be fair, it would be a pretty short fic if she went there, took a nap, and went home without interruption

>It's like reading an actual first contact diplomatic envoy's diary.
Well thats not too far off the mark for what it is.

>meet entirely new alien species
>realize theyre not going to probe and/or eat you
>attempt to establish communication
>???
>profit

I'd actually prefer it if the fic just stuck to the dudes perspective and had a companion fic dealing with the ponies'. kinda like VAtS/SAtV did
>>
>>25848288
Yeah, the differing viewpoints got kind of stale. Alternating between Lyra/Dale is alright and all, but when the author describes the exact same thing from another point of perspective each time, it gets pretty damn dull.

Also when the author repeats the same internal train of thought many times throughout the story. I get it, Dale thinks the ponos are super advanced or whatever, you don't have to go on for three paragraphs detailing exactly how related to Star Trek they are.
>>
>>25848309
>but when the author describes the exact same thing from another point of perspective each time

True. Though along similar lines, it was generally hilarious when used in Cultural artifacts.

>Go on for 10 paragraphs in ponyview, describing the humans actions in excruciating detail while still remaining vague as to whats actually happening
>Switch to the humans perspective as he finishes shaving and wonders what the hell the ponies are staring at

And yeah its getting old with the whole 'I wonder how these super futuristic space aliens manage to make their space age home bunkers look like thatched roof wooden shacks. theyre so future-y and magnificent to behold'

Still for all the minor quibbles, CSI/OtPP still remains the best of the serious first contact fics, so we cant really bitch too much
>>
>>25848376
It's kind of sad that the bordering-on-mediocre is the best we have. It's good, but it could really use a competent editor. I haven't started reading Onto the Pony Planet yet, but I have a bad feeling about it, as goes with sequels like this.
>>
>>25848411
Well if you're not satisfied with the current offerings, anon, you could always make the attempt yourself.

You know all of the current gripes regarding first contact fics, so I'm certain you'd be able to either improve or circumvent the problems.

There have been several instances of "I like the concept, but the execution in X fic is just Godawful. I'm going to do it better" in this thread.
you could easily join them in writing 3 chapters before losing steam and giving up :^)

I made the mistake of including Ponka in one of my scenes, so now I'm stuck because writing her properly is really hard and the temptation to turn her into a lolsorandumb fourth wall breaker is always there, an easy way out which would reduce the quality of the fic, but then again, she only shows up for one or two scenes, so what could it hurt?

Guys.

We should all write something together.
>>
>>25855137
I remember there was an initiative to do something like that in the early threads. We create a single narrative together, and everybody writes one chapter each.

Surprisingly, we never got around to do that.
>>
>>25855137
>>25855162

What about a rule book for us to conform to?

Something like Encyclopaedia Equestria, with basic laws regarding magic usage and trivia regarding species and lore. Nothing too constrictive to limit our creativity though.
>>
>>25855351
you mean the mlp wiki then
>>
>>25855361
Except they barely go over concepts such as race distribution and how magic spells work, nor how much an unicorn is capable of accomplishing.

It's good for lore and trivia about the show, but even then it's lacking in some parts.
>>
>>25855382
>Except they barely go over concepts such as race distribution and how magic spells work, nor how much an unicorn is capable of accomplishing.
Not true. They just provide hard facts from the show.
You just want a headcanon wiki, don't you?
>>
>>25855351
You don't need to do that all in advance. A more interesting approach is this:
One guy writes a story. He takes the lore stuff from it, and puts it in a shared document. That's in "the lore" now. The next time someone writes something in this project, he sticks to the already established lore, and writes down any new things he came up with into the shared document. And so on.
It's a procedurally generated clusterfuck, which sounds entertaining.

I'm not sure if this is the best place to ask, but I can't think of anywhere else to go.

I'm trying to read through the files in the fimfarchive, and when I try to write their contents into a text file, I get a bunch of weird symbols. I assume this is because Python isn't parsing the unicode properly, but I don't know what kind of encoding it's using. Does anyone know what kind of unicode it uses or how to fix this problem?
>>
>>25857676
Weird like &, or weird like 夬? The former means you need to fix the handling of HTML entities when parsing. I don't actually know how fimfarchive stores things but I assume they just downloaded the HTML versions of all the chapters? The latter means you need to fix some character encoding settings in either your Python file reading code (more likely) or in whatever program you're using to view the text files (less likely, most should auto-detect encoding properly). In particular, there's a character encoding setting somewhere in the `sys` module that probably needs to be set to UTF-8 before you open the file. Either that or you need to open it in binary mode (so read() produces bytestrings instead of decoding to text automatically) and then `.decode('utf-8')` on the result.
>>
>>25857841
First rule of tech support- assume the guy with the problem is a moron.

Isn't everything in fimarchive in epub format?

>>25857676
Try an epub reader/converter instead of mspaint or notepad or whatever bullshit method you're attempting
>>
>>25857841
Thanks. I fixed it by callling encode('utf-8') before writing to file.

The archive contains all the epub files, which I used some random library to convert to a string.
>>
>>25857960
It is in epub format, and when I say read, I meant using Python to process the epub's contents as a string so that I can do stuff to the contents before writing to file, though I can see why it might look like I'm using some really retarded method to open epubs.

Whoops, didn't mean to post that yet.

Anyways, I used a Markov Chain in order to try and write a fanfic. I figured the result aught to be better than some fanfics out there, and was wondering how good I could get it. The above sample is obviously trained on Fallout:Equestria, though I have hopes of eventually sampling from all of fimfiction.

If I can refine the algorithm a little, maybe adding in some NLP stuff, I might consider publishing some of its outputs just to see how people react.

Quick question:
What's the fucking deal with a/an? some places tell me an should only be used for words starting with an "Ah" sound, but others (Including every spellchecker I've used) tell me that "An" should be used before any word that starts with a vocal.
What's up with that? Is it a polemic mater, or one of those "It's up to opinion bro" things?
>>
>>25861006
If the next word starts with a vowel sound, use 'an', otherwise use 'a'. Note that "vowel sound" is not the same as "vowel letter": "an hour", "a usual day".

It's not up to opinion, your sentence will sound completely wrong if you fuck it up.

I've never managed to git gud in English pronunctiation. I have a good understanding of how it works in my head, but as soon as I try to say it out loud my tongue just doesn't seem to work right. So...what fanfic changed YOUR life?

Snark aside, I think it's a nice idea
>>
I just had the weirdest fucking idea

A stallion surgeon at the Ponyville General Hospital has a bizarre, unhealthy obsession with female internal anatomy. He admits mare patients and opens them up just to look at their reproductive tracts in excruciating detail. I guess it would be like a weird exploration of various mares in the series and how I envision their wombs/ovaries differ from one another? I don't fucking know. I had some weird rapey parts included (if a mare comes in as part of a fertility thing, he would open them up, and then fuck them on the table, watching as their reproductive tract responded), but I figured that was kind of overboard.

Still though, I can't deny that the idea is enticing...
>>
>>25861552
I can't say fanfiction has changed my life, but if there's one particular story that I held close, it has to be this one.

http://www.fimfiction.net/story/3513/keeping-it-simple

There's something about this story that just clicks with me. I think it's probably the slow, organic feel it has (which I've unsuccessfully tried to emulate in my fics.)

this is slightly my fetish. kind of.

Weird how I'm not really against gore or blood if it's in a sanitary surgical environment. You wouldn't think that taking a hacksaw to someone's sternum is much different to carefully pulling open the skin with forceps after separating the flesh with a scalpel.
>>
>>25861427

No, we would have juicier vowels then.
>>
>>25861840
Well, it's far less edgy and shocking in a surgical environment because there's a heightened environment of professionalism. That's what I'm aiming for in this fic, anyway; aside from the clear unprofessionalism of molesting mares while they're out and under the knife, the doctor is an exemplary surgeon on par with Black Jack (well, maybe not THAT good, but he's passionate, well trained, and meticulous).

I thought it was a really good story, well done though I think the mystery is a bit strained. Pretty obvious who it was from the get go, but still a good read.

Actually, Pinkie being jealous of Mare Do Well really threw me off, at some point I was considering Twilight and someone else I'm forgetting and assumed that the story mentioning Pinkie a little too often meant rejection was one of its focus points.

>>
>>25863082
Agreed. Though I feel it isn't about the mystery, but more about the character development between Rainbow and MDW. That's really where the story shines. I knew who it was maybe 5 or so chapters into it, but it didn't really take away from my enjoyment of the story and the character development.

Also that chapter after the reveal might just be my favorite writing ever

One of the very few pieces of fanfiction I'd actually call "Deep" with a straight face. Keeps you intrigued until the last moment, and for some reason I can't quite remember I was utterly convinced Mare Do Well was Rarity. I even remember joking at myself about her being (Actual spoiler:)Pinkie multiple times.
In something I am writing about horse superheroes, I am trying to capture the atmosphere of uncertainity, make the readers ask themselves the real identity of each heroe.
For example, two of them are Mind Master and Gnawer, the first is a RULES OF NATURE pensative&brooding heroe with a design similar to MDW's who has a bit of a pretentious vein and can control the mind of people, the later is a silent heroe whose sex remains indeterminate that can control animals. I want to play with characters like this, two heroes that could be the same individual but that hate each other for various reasons, generaly extremely disparing philosophies and metodologies. Pic related, a quote from a character, pretty much wraps my view in the general idea of heroes. And yes, it's supposed to sound pretentious.
Hell, at first I even played with the idea of not giving away the real identity of the main heroe. It'd have a action scenes interwined with slice of life of multiple characters, slowly hinting at the real identity. I trashed the idea because then the story would become more of an experiment than a story, but the idea still sits there influencing a lot of things.

>of each heroe

Spells, like solutes, can blend in more or less easily into solid or liquid object. All spells are soluble in air, as this state is considered the actual casting of a spell. Solubility depends on a spell's complexity.

Simple ones, like light spells, can be incorporated into most object. Visual analysis and management spells can be put into certain object only, notably transparent ones as glass or higher quality crystals. Complex ones, like teleportation, are downright almost impossible to put in an object, and remain unstable if done so.

Spell solvability also depends on the solvant. Crystals are considered universal solvants, able to contain most spells due to some magic boogaloo involving their organization. The less an object's structure is organized, the more resistance it opposes to spells. This also takes in account density, making air, even if highly disorganized, able to conduct every spell due to its low density. Resistance is rated with a scale from 0 to 1, 0 being a very high quality, almost transparent crystal and 1 being the most resistant material.

Resistance can also be put to good use. Some spells relying on the spell traversing object can be stopped easily with resistors, or even reflected. Some modern material put in use in new EUP armor are chosen due to their high resistance, and thus offers protection against those spell.

So I'm about to do the most autistic thing I've ever done and write a crossover fic (no I will not be telling what the crossover is), but I need some good Saddle Arabian names. Do these two ponies have a canon name? If not, does anyone have any ideas on some Saddle Arabian sounding pony names? I can't even get through chapter 1 without this.

Bumping with a story recommendation.

Lost Cities by Cold in Gardez
http://www.fimfiction.net/story/102166/lost-cities
Most of you have probably read it, and for those who haven't it's by Cold in Gardez who is a great author. This story is quite unique, attempting to tell a story with no characters, action, or dialogue, only descriptions, and the author pulls it off spectacularly. I would recommend this to everyone.
>>
>>25912241
>animation error
I don't think they're animation errors. An animation error is usually a very short scene (think the cyclopes stallion from Best Night Ever) or a scripting error (Ponyville's layout, Soarin's cutie mark, etc.). The fact they had such a long appearance seems to rule out the former and their second appearance suggests it's intentional.

>>25912271
You could argue over whether Zecora has a cutie mark. I don't think it's ever been stated whether it is or just some kind of paint marking.

I'd assume so.I've been tracking it for ages and noticed dude is logging in again.

>>25922504
>Not following... what?
its a 3 part series. first one is titled something like 'the arrival of ford mustang'. its another blatant wish fulfilling self insert with a human turned blue and yellow winger who also would like to cum inside rainbow dash. (and does. repeatedly.)

I dump everything into one read folder. even the shit I dropped, because I dont want to risk trying to read garbage again. I probably should have split up the read folder into 2 or 3 different ones, but I think I'm bordering on too many damned bookshelves already

>>
>>25922340

It's reasonably well written, but I don't know if this whole "Twilight finds new magic" is going anywhere that relates to Pandora (and it's a bit hard to believe nobody else has noticed this).

Also, you tease us with it being a Borderlands crossover, but after 8000 words you haven't delivered yet. Be wary of trying your audience's patience.

There better be some Tiny Tina by the time this is over!

>>25922603
>Gun mods

>I only write this for me

Then don't share it on a public fiction site.

>>25922705
I admit the concept of Twilight finding finding new magic is a bit flawed, but I think it is necessary to the story as a whole.

And don't worry, I don't plan to keep anyone waiting for for the actual crossover for too long. In fact it'll start kicking into gear next chapter.

Read through the prologue.

>The regal Princess
Most titles are capitalized only when attached to somebody's name ("Princess Celestia", "the princess")

>(the whole third paragraph)
Your verb tenses are completely fucked
Actually this seems to be a problem throughout most of the chapter.

>the process of balancing Equestria's checkbook
Balancing a checkbook and planning a budget are not at all the same thing.

>Amira cleared her throat, attempting to dislodge the sudden shakiness in her hooves.
Are you doing third person omniscient on purpose?

>It had three sides. One side was concave in shape, and the other two were somewhat flat.
Even after all the description in this paragraph, I have no idea what this thing actually looks like. I have a hard time imagining any reasonable 3D shape with only two flat faces and one concave face.

>As an Alicorn Princess
Neither "alicorn" nor "princess" should be capitalized here.

Other notes:
I rolled my eyes at the bit about Sunhorse having a hard job full of boring paperwork. It's honestly kind of cliché at this point. You didn't do anything interesting with it in this chapter, and I doubt it's going to come up again. You could have cut those two giant paragraphs (actually, the whole first five paras at least) down to probably 4-5 sentences.
It seemed a bit contrived to have them immediately jump to the conclusion that "it teleported here from outer space". Surely there are many more plausible explanations that they would think of first, before assuming the existence of extraterrestrial life.
They got hold of a powerful, unknown magical gizmo from beyond the stars, and they just GIVE IT AWAY to another country? I find that hard to believe. If you really need Celestia and Twilight to have the thing, why not just say a guard patrol found it in the Badlands or some such thing?
>>

Giving ponies modified human guns is just as misguided as giving them unmodded human guns. They're different beings, and wouldn't develop human guns in the first place, and therefore no modifications to them. If you want gunpowder weaponry, it has to be instruments that are designed to work for them in the first place, not just modifications of alien instruments.
>>
>>25925073
BUT MUH XCOM
>>
>>25923487
Yeah. It's something you could use as a matter of speech to elevate the princess, but it wouldn't, to my knowledge, be used as an actual title.
Being the ruler of a sovereign (co-)principality, Celestia's primary title would likely just be "Princess of Equestria", and you'd just call her "Princess". But then again royal and noble titles is a tricky thing to say anything definitively true about, as it varies from area to area and culture to culture, as well as the history of said title.
The current ruler of Liechtenstein is primarily just called Hans-Adam II, Prince (FĂĽrst) of Liechtenstein, but you could technically include his full name and titles:
Johannes Adam Ferdinand Alois Josef Maria Marco d'Aviano Pius, Prince of and at Liechtenstein, Duke of Troppau and Jägerndorf, Count at Rietberg, Ruler of the Houses of and at Liechtenstein.
90% of the time, it's the best to just stick with "Princess Celestia", and leave it at that. The remaining 10% is usually meant for comedy.
>>
>>25925244
It's not really elevating when you're specifying something that's already implied.

Celestia Moonshine Starswirl Sunshine Harmony, Princess of and at Canterlot, Duchess of Mustangia and Pegasland, Ruler of the Palace of and at Canterlot could works, but saying "the regal princess" equates to saying "the black nigger" or "the fat neckbeard" or even "the illiterate Bleedin".
>>
>>25925553
It's elevating precisely because it's redundant. Remember that I said that you wouldn't use it as a title. But you can use it to some effect in dialogue. People will say things that are strictly speaking redundant if they're staggering over their own words, or if they're trying to flatter or elevate the person they're addressing. You can also use it for emphasis.
Consider the difference between someone saying "Thank you, Princess", and "Thank you, my most regal Princess". Or the difference between saying "I'm selling white marble" and "I'm selling pristine, alabaster, snow-white marble". Or "the city is safe for the like of us" and "the city is a safe haven for the likes of us". You can use what's redundant to convey something more than the meaning of the words themselves.
But I'm not disagreeing with you that "regal princess" shouldn't be an actual title. I never did that. But you could still have a character say it.

I mean, something being redundant doesn't mean people won't say it, and you can use the effect uttering that redundancy creates to add something to your text. There's also things that pop up in normal speech that are strictly speaking redundancies. "Final outcome", "plan ahead", "repeat again", "close proximity" and "added bonus" are all examples. Or "PIN number", but that's a different matter completely.
>>
>>25926532
stop defending yourself.
>>
>>25926532
>Redundant exaggeration

I'm familiar with that, but "regal princess" really doesn't feel like that.

Marble could be of poor quality. It can be pink. "pristine, alabaster and snow-white"? Okay, I know how good the marble is.

The city is safe. Is it barely safe for survival? Is it only relatively safe? A safe haven you say? Oh then, I know how it feels.

A princess? Who? Zelda, Peach, Kate? A regal one? Of course you dumb shit, a princess is royal. Oh, princess of Equestria and ruler from dawn to twilight? That's better.

The desperate need for adoration and horsefame.

You have an idea for a story. You build an outline and put considerable effort into the details. You add tasteful worldbuilding and refrain from getting too carried away.

And people love it. Thousands of view, hundreds of faves, dozens of nut nuzzlers. You bask in the glory of their autistic adoration.

But eventually your well thought out fic draws to a conclusion. But the autists want more. Demands for a sequel come with every comment. Even if the original fic didn't leave any room for one or leave any set up whatsoever.

But you want that horsefame. Its like meth, except more addictive and less fun, but you gotta have it. You don't want everyone to forget about you, so you can't spend 6 months planning and outlining. You just start throwing shit together to sate the hunger of the monster you've created.

And that's how hard reset becomes hard reset 2, TBNE becomes TPC, dangerous business becomes BtWoE, triptych becomes whatever the fuck its called now, etc

I'm writing a fic (I'm 8 chapters or 32k words in) and it has hardly any regular readers for reasons more or less outside of my control. This is important, because one guy did comment on my latest chapter a few days ago, and judging by what he wrote, he may have gotten the wrong impression as to what I was trying (or more appropriately, not trying) to convey.

In retrospect, a lot of this is probably my fault since I may have accidentally given one of the protagonists the more sympathetic (as opposed to just pathetic, as I intended) point of view by writing mostly in his third person POV. This one protagonist is actually killed off by one of the other two protagonists, but probably because I used a "fade to black" ending to that chapter since I didn't see the need to depict his gory death in detail, he seems to think I'm going to find a way to save his life and dedicate further plot structure to him at the expense of the two other protagonists. Likely because he believed I was using him as symbolism for protagonist #1's abused and neglected conscience, when the reality is he was just meant to be a foil for the other two, and I just got off on him being abused; he'd already served both purposes to the extent that he could by the time I decided he should die.

Now, I know that people interpret works of fiction differently from others, including the author, but I didn't truly understand that until now. And since this is only one guy out of about ten, I can only assume the other nine likely feel the same way. How do I deal with it?

tl;dr I wrote fic, audience is making inferences about it I didn't mean for them to, wat do?
>>
>>25948666
Well, Satan, it's hard to say anything definitive without having read it, but it may be that you've really just utterly failed to convey what you intended to do, and instead told a different story. This can happen from time to time, as you write this story with absolute knowledge of everything that happens, but you might not always communicate that in the best way through your writing. In other words, it might be that you dun goof'd, and you've written the "wrong" story.
Do you have an editor? If you have, what does he have to say about it?
>>
>>25948755
I don't have an editor. I did make absolute sure Chapter 1 gave the audience the gist of what they were getting into without being too heavy-handed about it (#3's POV hardly makes an appearance on ch1), but that may have been forgotten about since condemned protagonist #3 was manipulated by protagonists #1 and #2 into being their combined pack mule and whipping post on false pretences, and it's only natural for the narrator's words to blend into the main POV that it portrays. I intended to portray #3's cognitive dissonance in what he saw as opposed to what he'd been told to believe, but I might have actually just confused the audience.

I wanted to avoid getting an editor because I already have enough self-doubt without one, and people seem to like it even if it's not exactly in the way I intended.
>>
Finally finished reading Crystal's Wishes by Crystal Wishes, the story that some of you might have noticed kept popping up in the Featured Box. It was... nice. The story is 400k+ words of very fluffy SoL. The main character goes through life with minimal conflict except for minor stuff that gets resolved within a couple chapter and generally has a charmed life by a lot of standards. It's not intellectually stimulating, but it's a nice fic for turning off your brain and enjoying a comfy, cozy look into the life of a very cheerful individual, and it's decently written from a technical perspective.

It's also part of a verse, and most of the major characters in the story have their own stories, many which were written before this one, so I might go check them out, since they seem to have much more interesting lives than this protagonist.

>I just got off on him being abused
>I decided he should die
This is your problem. You unintentionally made him the "main character" of the story with plot focus and limited POV and then arbitrarily decided to kill him off. You should always plan out character deaths ahead of time since they carry a ton of weight--both for the plot of the fic itself and the readers' reactions.

Your readers are calling your unintentional bluff. They have a limited third person narration, a main character, and a "fade to black" chapter ending. Of course they think he's not really dead. From their perspective, the whole story kind of implodes if he is.

>How do I deal with it?
You can definitively show he's dead by showing his rotting corpse and then move on with the plot.

Or, since Schrodinger's plot is at play and the readers only know as much as you've told them, you can actually keep the guy alive and carry on with the story with him as the focus. Given his death was apparently arbitrary, it doesn't appear that that would effect the plot very much.

I'd say go with whatever works best for the plot. Given how much you've focused on the guy, it might be best to just keep him as the primary protag and not waste your and the readers' time with a pointless death.
>>

I didn't "arbitrarily" decide to kill him off. I had his death planned to happen from the very beginning (I have pretty much the whole plot planned start to finish in an outline). The reason why I had it mostly limited to his POV was because that's how I got the most sympathetic perspective and the most conflict.

But if it helps, the very next chapter does discuss what would realistically happen to him even on the off chance he did survive his heavily implied fate, and it's outright stated that he isn't relevant anymore. Plus, the previous chapter is entirely from protagonist #1's POV, and so is the chapter I just mentioned.
>>
>>25953473
I feel I must add that, despite the POV being limited to #3, #'s 1 and 2 are the real main characters; the plot, itself, revolves around them. The original #3 is being replaced with a brand new #3 who is designed to be cute and endearing and not a constantly abused butt monkey, and to act similarly as a foil but in a fresh and new way.
>>

>>
>>25953473
>>25953544

Hate to break it to you, but your POV character IS the protagonist. Just because the plot doesn't revolve around them doesn't mean they aren't the narrative focus. The protagonist is the character around whom the story centers, not the one around whom its events center; that's why Hammond isn't the protagonist of Jurassic Park, or Private Ryan isn't the protagonist of the movie that's named after him.

There are stories that kill their protagonists partway through, but they're pretty rare, and most of them are pretty bad, because it means your taking the character your audience empathizes with and getting rid of them; what do you expect them to keep reading for? Whether or not you intended to, that's exactly what you seem to have done.

Of course, it's also possible you're just describing your own story poorly. I know someone already said it upthread, but it's hard to critique something without a link.
>>
>>25953544
The more I read about this, the more it seems like one of two possibilities. Either, you're really bad at explaining what's actually going on in your story, or you really don't know what you're doing, which means you're writing a bad story.

I'm pretty sure I'm just explaining it poorly, and I feel like I'd be digging myself further into a ditch if I tried to explain further without just linking you to the story. I got my question answered. That's all that matters, really. In retrospect, it was a dumb question with a pretty obvious answer that I already knew somewhere in the back of my head, but I felt like I had to ask because I was just the slightest bit surprised at being expected to perform an asspull like that.

>Plus, he's killing the character who is telling the story. How is he going to tell it now, lest a major change in narration?
My suggestion would be doing exactly that. Is it not allowed? It's his story, and he wants to do something interesting with it instead of blindly sticking to whatever you believe are the "rules" of writing.

I'm still not sure if it's a mystery fic or not. Sure, there's some weird shit going on in this town, but it's been months since Celestia heard about it and there's still barely any development. I feel like the story focuses on Celestia's and Luna's relationship before Luna went full Nightmare Moon, but when Luna finally arrives in town, the story suddenly focuses on the mystery instead.
It has pretty good writing, and I like how Celestia acts all kind and is in character, and yet her narration betrays just how judgmental and impatient she really is.

tl;dr I like the writing, but I'm not sure where the story is going.

>>
>>25969274

>>
>>25969274
Maximum of three. Only use tags that apply to the overarching feel of the fic. If it's mostly dark but has a few jokes here and there, then that doesn't warrant a Comedy tag. If you're writing something that actually needs more than three, then it's probably some bi-polar bullshit and you'll likely gain a devoted following of autistic teenage edgelords for posting it.
>>
>>25969354
I have quite a few stories, but the issue is deciding when enough is enough.

Let's get hypothetical: Say I have a slice of life story. The whole lead up is comedy, because of the awkward situations that the protagonist is put in, but then enough is enough for the people around the protagonist. They confront them, and the story changes tone into a sad ending for the protagonist as they decide they would rather suppress a part of themselves rather than lose their friends.

So, I'd tag the above premise as: Slice of Life, Comedy, Sad. But, you can't tag Comedy and Sad. So then, I tag Slice of Life, Comedy, Tragedy. Is that too many tags? Doesn't seem so.

Then, if the main character is, say, Anon, then there's a human tag. Is this fine? Do you tag human if there's only one human in the story? Let's still say it's an Anon fic and it's in second person.

Then there's 5. I certainly agree that 5 would be the upper limit.

>>25969406
This makes sense, but then what happens in the case of above where there's a tone shift. Some tone shifts can be pulled off really well, especially if it's gradual. How do you tag that case? Do you tag what the majority of the story is? Or just what it ends up as?
>>
>>25969274

I feel like two genre tags plus any number of content tags is the way to go.

Content tags (anthro, sex, etc.) are yes-no propositions; does the story have this thing in it or not? If so, tag it accordingly, use as many such tags as are necessary.

Genre tags (adventure, romance, etc.) are supposed to tell me what kind of story I'm reading. I can think of plenty of two-tag combos that make sense, like "romantic comedy," but I'm having trouble visualizing a story where three would be necessary. If you tagged your story, say "romantic comedy adventure," I'd have to imagine that at least one of those is superfluous, e.g. what you actually wrote a romantic adventure with some jokes, or a comic adventure where the protagonist gets laid. Secondary story characteristics shouldn't get a genre tag; genre tags are for what the ENTIRE story is about.
>>
>>25969482
I completely agree with this. This answers my question. Thank you.
>>
>>25969478
>Tragedy
But does it need a Tragedy tag? Remember Tragedies have bad endings, regardless of the tone of the story (though they're generally more of a downer mood)

So, tragicomedy?

>So then, I tag Slice of Life, Comedy, Tragedy. Is that too many tags? Doesn't seem so.
Three is good in my opinion.

>Then, if the main character is, say, Anon, then there's a human tag. Is this fine? Do you tag human if there's only one human in the story?
Yes. Including a human automatically makes the story and/or the reader focus more on the one being that doesn't belong.

>Let's still say it's an Anon fic and it's in second person.
They should just add a Cancer tag.

>Then there's 5.
What? Is there a 2nd person tag now?

Anyway, I think you should only use up to 3 genre tags (Sad, Mystery, Comedy, Adventure etc.) plus additional trigger warning tags such as Human, Anthro or Alternate Universe

Slice of Life, Sad. Maybe Tragedy if you're going to be grim about things. I'd say this doesn't sound like a Comedy at all.
>>
>>25969701
I'd say it does, he said it focuses on comedy up until the very end.
>>
>>25969666

Just looking at the liturature entries for those articles, I think the people who picked those examples were missing the point. I mean, if you're trying to find a protagonist in A Song of Fire and Ice, you're missing the point. And almost half their examples are "here's someone who gets a POV prologue where they die." That's like saying that the guy holding the gun whose barrel you look down at the start of a James Bond film is a "decoy protagonist."

I mean, if what your doing makes sense, then it makes sense, and if it doesn't, it doesn't. I'm just saying, I definitely wouldn't use those TVtropes articles to make my case.
>>
>>25969714
Does it focus on comedy, or does it focus on being funny? Because I don't feel like that has to be the same thing.
If I were to tag something of mine as a comedy, then I'd do that because the purpose of the story is to deliver something essentially comedic. It doesn't just have to be full humour all the time, but the goal, the intention is the comedic part. I could use other things, such as an adventure plot to deliver that comedy, but the comedy is still the main intent.
But what Anon describes sounds more like setting up the real goal, the sadness, using the comedy as a means to get there. The comedy is a tool, not the goal. And that isn't what I'd call comedy.

I'll agree, I don't think this is clear-cut, and I see how you can view it as both, but I wouldn't call a story a comedy when it seems like the essential story concept is something else.

I disagree, but I respect your opinion on the matter, and I would love to have another discussion with you on another subject in the near future.

>reading sad story
>comments are all about how the author is using it as a personal analogy for themselves and waxing poetic about the lamentations of their life

Lyrics:
READING RAINBOW!
Butterfly in the sky
I can go twice as high
Take a look
It's in a book
a Reading Rainbow
I CAN GO ANYWHERE!
Friends you know
And ways to grow
a Reading Rainbow
I CAN BE ANYTHING!
Take a look
It's in a book
a Reading Rainbow
READING RAINBOW!

I'm not saying those TVT pages are the final definitive source on the matter (TVT, itself, doesn't even *try* to present tropes as simple, homogeneous things), but they're far more accurate than saying "he's the POV character therefore he's the driving force of the narrative and killing him will make your story shit".
