I like em. If simplicity is what you're aiming for then keep it up, they look pretty cute. Kinda remind me of Weaver's work.

I think a lot of people feel they *need* to draw like Da Vinci or something, but if that's not your goal then don't try to draw like that.

Like if you're not going to focus on having your drawings fully rendered, or anatomically correct, then you can still focus on other things and still come out with a nice pictures. Again, Weaver's drawings are really simplistic, but they make up for it with having a lot of spirit and appeal in their characters.

tl;dr: Your pics look fine. If that's how you wanna draw and you'd like others to like your drawings also, I'd suggest having your characters doing, saying, interacting with each other in some way that's interesting.

I wanted to do a color of this, but someone actually took an image of test reading "Draw Thread" and pasted it in a new layer non transparently and screwed with the Original Image.

It's like opening your box of Corn Pops and suddenly finding Spiders.

I'm not having a box of Spiders Draw Thread.

Also, when adding the words "Draw Thread" do so in a new layer, via text insertion tool. Set the letters to be seen and everything else absolutely transparent.

Its little things like this that make me twitch my eyelid when coloring.

Can I get a picture based off this scenario and with Hope and Good Sombra? I just wanna see her rubbing a crystal teat on his face as he blushes up a storm

>"Sombra! Sombra! I think I found one!"
>"Great job Hope, let me see." He takes the shard and gives it a once over before blushing and clearing his throat, "O.oh,."
>"What is it Somby?"
>"It appears you found her umm..teat, as it were."
>"Oh..hahaha!" Gripping the shard in her hoof she begins to rub it over his face as he tries to back away "Look~ She LIKES you! Haha."

If you find yourself getting frustrated maybe take a break. Watch a movie or go for a walk. Changing mediums can help you figure out a problem too. I switch to using a ballpoint pen when I get stuck on something since it has a different feel and look to it. Looking at references of pone artists who use good anatomy helps too.

Meditation can do wonders too.

Do you listen to anything while you draw? I find I work my best with a little background noise. It lets me be more intuitive and less analytical so my sketches tend to be a little more loose. Of course when I study a subject I have to work in silence.
>>
>>25811272

Oh yeah, I'm subscribed to him on youtube. He's got some good inking and construction. He's definitely a good source to learn more realistic drawing.

I'm going to thumb through it in a moment after I relax for a bit. Work was a bitch. He's the whole reason I got into pen&ink drawing to begin with. I purchased his book as a way of giving back to him. $20 is a steal, imo.

I post his videos some times as a resource. Mainly his advice on construction. He goes over many different ways of approaching drawing and doesn't try to pigeon-hole the student.

I feel you have your bisections of the head of the sphere a little too extreme. Especially the horizontal line. You can bring it down a bit and still have the character looking up by using their eyes. When changing the angle of the head I like to think of the shape the cheek area makes in different perspectives. The ears are a little tricky and I spent a good 10 minutes trying to imagine how they'd go out into space but ended up winging it. I would suggest just experimenting.

Pic related is my result but you should really play with it. I spent a good 20 minutes or so manipulating, redrawing, and flipping the canvas it to get a result that I liked. I like the body you gave her.

>>25814377

The Nightly Twilight Thread began calling me "Post-it" because of my tendency to draw on sticky notes when I first began drawing for them. I'll just stick with that.

Also I realize the head doesn't quite fit on the body. This is a result of drawing the head first instead of the entirety of the character. If I were to do this from scratch I would "ground" the character first on the plane and perspective I wanted, sketch out the body THEN draw the head to fit that body and taking into account what the entirety of the spine connecting to the head is doing.

Stretching expression and anatomy is more on the "cartoony" side of things so it's something that has to be experimented with. A lot of times you'll have to break anatomy to get it to look right. Watch any episode of FIM with Pinkie Pie in it and you'll get an idea of how far you can push the pony figure. I highly recommend watching episodes to get ideas for poses for practice. Just be aware of the occasional animation error.

To be honest I only posted that particular image because it had a nice sketch of a pony laying down and looking up.

The entirety of the character is a bit too long. The benefit of using digital is that you can use the transform tool to experiment with the aspect ratio. The far right is what I would personally go for. Note using the transform tool also changed the perspective box and hoof placement. Just something to watch out for.

In general be aware of the hoof placement and work from the ground up. The way you have the front hooves close together looks a tad unnatural.

We all have our moments. I haven't done full body in a while either. I mainly experiment with faces and expression. I've only recently began getting more expressive with poses compared to previous works.

If you're ever having issues with something; try not looking at it for a good 10 minutes. When you come back to it you'll notice the flaws. I usually sketch stuff for about 30-40 minute then take a 10-15 minute break. By the time I get back to drawing I'll notice little mistakes then work on fixing those mistakes. I can draw for an entire day using this process and it's extremely efficient. Though keep in mind this is what works for -me- so your mileage may vary. Acquiring a good workflow is very important but it involves knowing yourself well.

Flip your canvas often, too.

You're very welcome.
>>
>>25817282
Thats a good idea. i might try your system out for a bit and see how it works. What does flipping the canvas achieve? like, letting me see proportion issues?

You can "mirror" the image to check for symmetry. You can test it by drawing a circle then flipping your canvas. You'll notice just how off the circle will be. You can use this trick to immediately spot flaws.

There's a quote by da Vinci regarding using a mirror on his drawings but I'm too tired to find it right now.

Yes but only if you branch out. You'll definitely be gaining mileage from drawing pone but it all depends on the individual. Hand-eye-coordination and color theory will translate into other ventures. If you focus on actually learning horse muscle structure and anatomy it will translate into other things as well. Your observation skills will be sharpened as long as you use a critical eye when drawing pone.

Drawing other things will still require effort and study but it'll be a little easier. The subject you choose to use as a catalyst for art doesn't matter as long as you find it interesting and it keeps you learning. Even sonicfags who draw sonic characters all day will get good at art in general as long as they don't stagnate like an autistic manchild.

The "foreshortened" eye is the eye furthest from the viewer; the left one. It's going around a rounded object (the head) so the circles that makes up the eyes become more elliptical in nature.

>>25819312

That's great. Try to be a little more loose. Learn to "ghost' your movements as you're making the circle. You hover over the paper, making the movements for the circle but never touching the paper. You visualize the circle on the paper before touching down on the paper with your pencil then you "true it up" by rounding out the circle with each successful pass. This video demonstrates (timestamped):

Good to see that you're analyzing your own work and make notes. Writing things down is an effective way for many people to help remember things, even if they never check the notes again.

What you call the "second" eye, is my "first eye". I find it more effective to draw that eye first and use it as a reference point for the cheek, second eye and muzzle (in that order)

And the "leg elbow" is called "hock" 8^)

Mad cute. I can see your "style" on drawing and its cute!

The muzzle should be the ones used commonly by other artists; a simple 'c'. The nose can be drawn like that, but you need to flatten the top more. It looks like a pigs. It should also be smaller.

Her left foreleg needs to be closer to her belly so it can gain a sense of depth. With depth in mind, the flank needs to end lower, it looks as if she has long legs. Keep on drawing and you will improve greatly.
>>
>>25823410
The back of her neck is extremely large. You need to make the front of her neck closer to make the neck look thin. Is that chest fluff? It it is you need to make the lines lighter and thinner. Flank can be larger and the leg in the background should be lowered and moved in more.

Table is off. Perspective is shit.It Who cares. It easy to learn perspective, go to /ic/ and find the guide in the sticky. Other than that bullshit I spewed, good work. That looks really good.

I only did it because when I zoomed out I couldn't get a clear, focused shape when flipping the canvas. Once I outlined everything the shape was more clear and focused my eye on the entirety of the shape. There's probably better ways to do it but right then I needed a quick fix.

Even right now I hate the unfocused sections in the rest of the image. I really need to start lining my shit.

Experiment a lot. A lot. I mean like a lot.

Posting pic related since it's what a typical practice sheet looked like when I practiced what I wanted out of pone muzzle. This was before I began really getting a feeling for what I wanted. Even now I still switch between a simple muzzle to a defined muzzle depending on my mood. Call it being inconsistent but it's me being open to new ideas. After checking out DennyButt's muzzle style I kind of like it.

Personally I really like Tsitra360's pone faces.

https://derpiboo.ru/tags/artist-colon-tsitra360

I would really suggest being as experimental as possible so that you come up with something a little more unique. Just be prepared to make a lot of ugly pony heads. Borrow styles from different artists, combine them, have fun. You never know what with you'll come up with.

Yeah, I know. If I did something wrong you'd think a bunch of chatty artwork types would be willing to say why they don't like something- but I suspect it's only the lack of boobs and/or flames in the artwork. So I've decided to ignore the blank minuses and keep doing what I'm doing. Heck, one guy didn't like my 'construction' (OK, so I skimp on backgrounds) and that led to a weeklong poking at the suggestion and 6 requests done as practice, so you can't claim that I totally ignore the sensible advice. I just got to add more jazz. But it's christmas time and I got stuff to do. Ciao.
>>
>>25829851
>construction

The shapes themselves aren't appealing and very wobbly. I'd hardly call that construction. you wouldn't make a house from shapes like these. They need to be more solid.

>but I suspect it's only the lack of boobs and/or flames in the artwork

I didn't comment because you need to keep working on it. It's really hard to give critique when it looks like you scribbled shapes down and called it a day.

There's nothing I really like about your deliveries so I tell myself that if I'm going to make nothing but negative comments then I'm probably better off just not saying anything at all. There's plenty of assholes already and I'd rather not be labeled as one but if you want my honesty then you have it.

The only thing you have going for you right now is that you're trying and that's probably more than the majority of the artfags here. Hell, including myself sometimes.

It's not that bad. I have a slight skew to the right I have to be aware of and constantly adjust. It becomes an issue when the entire undersketch ends up with slight skew. Flip your canvas every 5 minutes or so and its easy to catch.

My tendency to skew entire drawings to the right was really bad a few months so I worked on correcting it. An anon kindly pointed out that something was -off- about my construction and it turns out its because the ellipses I made for the forms I used were slight skewed and I wasn't noticing. After that I make sure the ellipses I use for construction are corrected as I work so ill save a headache that I may get later. I'm beginning to notice these tiny nuances as I sketch.

>>
>>25835199

>>25835199
Don't draw animu at first. Learn to draw realistic characters without the fake bullshit. Learn how the body really moves and what muscles do what. Once you have the basic understanding of that, drawing weebshit would be a cakewalk. It will also look great with realistic anamity and line confidence.

Tldr; Don't. Draw reallism.

Was going to say what >>25835209 said.

It's always best to at least get somewhat of a foundation in realism. You don't have to draw perfect anatomically correct people or creatures, but it helps to at least learn the rules first so you can bend them. It's not the best idea to start learning from something that is already stylized either second, third or more hand. Also don't worry about style. That's something that develops naturally from shortcomings, inability to do things correct, and laziness in my case.
>>
>>25835240
>>25835299
I've tried that realism junk. It just doesn't translate over into anime. It's like learning how to draw a horse so you'll get how to draw a dog. I spent a long while on /ic/ and watching Proko videos, but I just don't feel like I'm getting better.
>>
>>25835199

>>>/ic/
>>>/a/

If you're really dead set on drawing anime then you should mix it in with life studies of people and gesture drawings. When I began drawing ponies I already had gone though some basics in drafting and people sketching. Everything I drew looked like garbage but those lessons were still there. I just needed repetition and polish. Even a pony drawfag will have to draw an occasional horse to understand their physiology.
>>
>>25835321
If you think it doesn't translate, you're an idiot.
>>
>>25835321
>learning to draw a horse in order to draw a dog

But they share the same physiology. Even humans and horses share the same names for the major muscle groups and bones because they function in similar ways. It's a pity that you're too close-minded to realize this.

Realism isn't a waste.

>don't feel like I'm getting better

And how long have you been drawing?
>>
>>25835349
I think this is what kills my motivation. I failed out of my major because of anatomy classes. I just don't get it. Do I seriously need to know every bone, every tissue, every muscle every vein, etc. before I can even start drawing people? Before I can even start drawing cartoons? What am I doing in figure drawing? Just making lines and trying to make a body out of it? I just don't get it.

>>25835370
Probably.

>>25835390
Honestly, a couple months on and off. I'm just picking it up again because drawing realism killed my drive the last time.
>>
>>25835390

And to add to that; I sketch my cats periodically for ideas for new poses for ponies. If we went by what you said about said about dogs and horses then that should impossible.

I think you're missing the point here...
Even anime has it's roots and foundation in realism. It's just stylized until it is what it becomes.

From what I gather, the problem that people tend to have with the anime artstyle is that it becomes Diluted (or is it over saturated?) from people taking something that's already stylized and trying to go off of that, then it eventually just becomes generic Uuuguu face and pointy chins.

No you don't, you just need a general idea of where they are, how they move and some about general proportions of a human being. Just some of the basic rules so you can figure out how to better bend them.

For faces for example, When you know where some of those muscles in the face are and you they move (the rule), you can exaggerate them to varying degrees (bending of the rule) to get silly, intense or serious expressions.
>>
>>25835636
OK, but how will I know how to break the rules? How will I know when I know where everything is and what it does? I'm sorry, I just don't know what exactly I should be drawing.
>>
File: exaggerations.png (24KB, 800x800px) Image search: [Google]
exaggerations.png
24KB, 800x800px
>>25835668
I'm not the best at explaining and my proportions might not be exact, but here goes for the general idea.

So I take it you've at least drawn many average humans right? So you know things like how many skulls fit in the torso and like how generally if you have your arms down at your sides the elbows will be at about the bottom of your ribcage and fingertips just a little below half your thighs? That sort of thing like how you have your hand up to your face and the fingertips are at about your forehead with the bottom of your palm at your chin.

Well in this picture I bent the rules slightly. From the average, I made the torso longer and the arms longer in proportion more or less to the torso. It resulted in this knuckle dragging lughead who could be a lovable gentle giant. In the third body, I made the torso (well ribcage) shorter while making the legs longer. Ending up with a slender person who could be a track runner maybe.

I would say you might have to experiment some, but go back through some of that information you gathered through your anatomy classes and filter out some of the super specifics. I believe to work with Cartoons you want more of the big picture details like general skeleton, bigger muscles and proportions.

You also mentioned figure drawing. Gestures and figure drawing is more to capture the movement and the flow of something rather than all of the super specifics. Cartoons tend to exaggerate movement a lot, gestures help grasp movement

>a couple months on and off

If you already have preconceived ideas of what you think art is and what it should look like then you better be in it for the long haul.

Take it from someone who has only been drawing for two years; this shit takes time. It's not a week thing, it isn't a month thing, it isn't even a year thing. It takes a solid 10 years to learn any other skill for a profession at a near-master level. Learning an instrument takes around a decade, studying to be a lawyer takes about a decade, to become a teacher in anything you'll need at least five years in that subject as far as I know. Drawing, draftsmanship, art; whatever you want to call it. It will take years to master.

This isn't even considering the many facets of fine arts: composition, color theory, line control/weight, perspective, anatomy, gesture; they're their each individual skill that needs to be honed, slowly but surely. This is why some people dedicate their whole lives to learning art.

The ball is in your court. You need to make the decision right now. If you want art to be your life then you need to be in it for the long haul. I'm comfortable as a hobbyist but who knows if I'll be good enough in a decade to get a job relating to art. Right now I'm working on the skills I need to work on and invest in myself for the future.

I know you're looking for "the answer" but I"m sorry to say there isn't one. The only option is to draw more and study. Everything is in your hands and no one here can force you to do anything.

Just keep one thing in mind; think of this as an investment of who you want to BE. The person you are right now and the person you are 5 years from now are two completely different people. Invest in this NOW. Your future-self will thank you.

Sorry for the wall of text but you sound like me 18 months ago.

I believe you might be overthinking a few things. I have a feeling you might already know the information you need to know, but not quite know the way to go about using that information. My teacher in painting and Life drawing classes would often flip our canvases upside down on us while we weren't looking. He'd do that so we could get a different perspective on what we were drawing since often times we'd start to focus in on one part too much. He'd also encourage us to step back see our drawing from a distance.

I think what you need is a fresh perspective your anatomy stuff that you already have.

I get how long it takes with all that hard work, and it's freaking me out! I need to know what to practice right now so I can get better faster! I can't just keep copying what I see. >I'm just picking it up again because drawing realism killed my drive the last time.

It killed my drive too. Then I began drawing what i liked. It was shit at first but I just kept at it. I'm not saying I'm amazing now. But I work on improving every day. I draw for at least 3 hours a day and this is nonnegotiable to me. But this is ME. You're you and you may not have the energy for that. You need to find how you operate. How your brain works. How your body reacts to sitting for hours on end and drawing. How you learn. Art is so much about learning about yourself. I'm glad I realized this very early.

>What am I doing in figure drawing?

Figure drawing is about finding the flow and form of a pose. I don't figure draw as often as I need to (because it helps) but it has helped me. When you're watching Proko's videos draw along. Copy his strokes, copy his arm movements, really absorb and listen to what he says. A lot of what figure drawing is has to do with anatomy as well so this requires you to at least know the major muscle and bone groups or at least be familiar with them.

Glenn Vilppu is fucking amazing too and he's the closest you'd get to da Vinci in terms of the energy and style.

Figure drawing has done wonders for finding the forms for both the face and body in everything I do.

>I have no time to just "figure it out as I go."

There are no shortcuts. Your only option is to draw more and study.

>and it's freaking me out!

Why? Are you under peer pressure? Deadlines?

What's the big deal? You have months to learn and get better.

You want to draw backgrounds? Then draw backgrounds. Use lots of references.

>I can't just keep copying what I see

Sure you can. It hasn't stopped me. Do what other artists are doing. Find your favorite anime artist and just start copying. The key is to look at their image with a critical eye. "What do I like about this? What am I feeling? How would I do things differently if I had this amount of skill?" These are questions you should be asking yourself. This is how you discover yourself.

This is a problem with face proportions. You need to use reference and learn the basic proportions of the face.

Allright, first off I made my blood circle little too small. You want to even it out with the chest circle. And you want to bring them closer together in less you're going for one that is stretched out. Think bean. As for the rest of it you can see what I did and adapt your drawing to the strongest points. The strongest points of this would obviously be the expression of a slight sit. I'm not 100% accurate but I hope it helps.

The reason why I need to get good right now is because every day I fall behind is another day I'm stuck as a wagecuck. I can't do this for fun anymore. I have to do it so I can actually compete with the world. I'd rather have mental breakdowns every night learning how to draw than ever go back to "How can I help you?"

I'm so worried about just copying because I feel like I have no frame to work with. I feel like I'm just reprinting the page where every line has to be in exact proportion.

Sorry, guys. I know this topic is more suitable for /r9k/, but I need to get better like yesterday.

I can't pretend to know what you're going through. I work a classic 40 hour/week 9-5 job I hate it but it pays the bills. I'm only grateful that it's granted me the absolute freedom to enjoy this hobby. You may be better off asking artists who have been in your shoes before. All I can give you is my perspective from a someone who is as new as you are to this.

Gosh i feel bad right now . I hope everyone up above this is doing okay! :/

Muh fellow 3 hour nigga.

Okay admittedly I also draw all day at work since I have a desk job wew IT but at home I always make sure to draw from 8:30 to 11:30 at night. No excuses, no weaseling out of it.

I kept my original sketchbooks to turn back and laugh at how bad I was when I thought I was doing it right. Heavy handed, wrist using, grove the paper fuckery.

Post-it Anon speaks the truth. Art isn't an "IM DONE" hobby. It's a lifetime commitment to learning. One day you'll get so caught up in learning the next thing you won't realize how far you've come along.

Right now its poses for me. Pose pose pose. Learning how the proportions warp and bend while keeping them life like and not rigid.

Reminds me of what I try to draw, though I usually go for still life and shading random geometry. Or drawing mugs or vases or shit.

Been at this an embarrassingly long time with a decent increase. I just never manage to get anything done, not even stuff like >>25836520.

>>25836336
Thank you so much. Shame this thread is about to hit the bump limit, I had more questions. IDK why I stretch my shit.
