I took a psych class thinking it was going to be a humanities class.I was very wrong There was actually a section on homosexuality and there's a lot of factors that can produce a gay person. One of the most influential cause is genetics. There have been studies that suggest that the reason why homo sexuality exists is because some of our male ancestors functioned to defend the young of relatives rather than reproducing themselves. Some of the very few that did reproduce passed on the genes that carry that trait. There have been twin studies that confirm its heritability. That's why there is more gay guy's than grills. That is one of the first reasons why one might be gay but there is more. Another study showed that the uterus environment can have role in determining sexuality. Apparently there are some hormones that can alter the nervous system in a way that changes your sexuality too. I think there were more reasons but I can't remember. As for the people that "came out of the closet", humans are very horny creatures and have historically fucked strange things. In that case classical conditioning could applied with homo sexuality being the unconditional stimulus. That's why some people go their whole lives raising a family with a women only to realize later that they were gay all along.

Look, I think that in reality both approaches can be correct.
Some people feel that their sexuality is not a choice and either don't ever change over their entire life or feel that any changes are from them accepting themselves for 'who they are'.
This approach is attractive because it frees a person for any 'moral' responsibility regarding their sexuality. The idea is that sexuality is not a choice and you should just accept who you are. (Unless you're a pedophile or zoophile, because those don't count for whatever reason.) Some people have tried to change but found that they simply suffered, thus to them their sexuality is not a choice.
Sure, that's their experience and is completely valid.

However, there are other people (like me) who feel that their sexuality WAS a choice. This is appealing because it means that THEY have control over their body and who they are.

People blow themselves up or willingly suffer torture in the name of religion, and that is DEFINITELY a choice.

Furthermore, there is a small selection of people that tried to change there sexuality and WERE successful at it, living perfectly happy lives. The experiences of these people are just as valid as the people who tried, and failed, to change their sexuality.

The way I see it, telling me that "I am who I am" is the same as saying "bi's aren't real".

This has proven wrong though. The children of gay people are no more likely to be gay than anyone else, and there have been studies of identical twins where one is gay and the other is straight. Not to mention it violates the principle of natural selection. Organisms that don't want to reproduce are weeded out by evolution extremely quickly. There is no way that "not wanting to reproduce" would help you survive to reproduce.

I agree with what you said about hormones in uterus though. What I like about the theory is that it explains why there so many more gay men then there are gay women - because women are the carrier of the child. A male fetus is far more likely to receive female hormones than a female fetus is to receive male hormones.
