I thought it was good. I liked how cohesive S5 was, in terms of storytelling and arc. Some of the individual eps were pretty bad, but the overall effect is solid.

That ending actually feels like a solid ending for the show; it was clearly written to be so if necessary. I'm wondering where they'll go from doing an entire season on the core ethos of MLP.

See, my problem isn't that episode 100 had references. It's common knowledge that shows that run for a long time eventually get a meta episode where they just poke fun at themselves and get all the meta jokes out of their system

My problem is that Slice of Life went at it in the worst way possible. Think about this: In five years, the half an hour joke will still hold up on its own, because it's poking fun at the inherent way the episodes are formatted, and also the sorta simplistic premise of the show.
In five years, that weird purple snake from the first episode showing up and saying his name is Steven Magnet will be a complete dated, even to the point that most people will have either forgotten about it or just won't know what the fuck that's about

Fanbases are volatile, shows arent. By tying an episode to the fanbase so closely, they've basically made an episode that has an extremely short expiration date

Huh. I never thought of that. It is quite a reach to bring a character back from the first episode. And his name is sort of garbled nonsense. (Magnet... water... tides? Sea serpent? Eeeh, yeah, it doesn't work.)

I think as a character he -might- have some staying power in the back of people's minds because he was in the first episode. Assuming people saw that one first (which probably becomes a stretch the longer the show goes on), they might remember him.

Otherwise yeah, you're right, Steven comes out of fucking nowhere without any explanation.

The person I was replying to listed REASONS he didn't like an episode when normally the person who says he doesn't like the episode just says "it was the meme episode and you should be ashamed to like any of it". And I thought the fact he listed reasons was interesting and wanted to hear more specifics about his reasons. Why? Because his opinion differs from mine and I wanted to hear more about his.

The biggest mistake they did was looking too deep into the fandom. Imagine you're someone who has never gone to derpibooru, or looked at pony stuff on tumblr, or whatever. Scenes like Vinyl and Octavia playing music, or the doctor doing doctor stuff would fly right over your head, not just because they're characters that are famous exclusively to the fanbase, but because those scenes aren't particularly funny or clever

The doctor looks like doctor who. The fanbase gave him that name. He's with Derpy. He says vaguely DW related things. Scene ends

See what I mean? Those scenes have nothing going for them BESIDES the fact that they're nods to the fandom. There are no real jokes, no clever lines, no visual gags, nothing. The writers took the laziest path towards this episode, almost as if they just made a checklist of ''Fandom things to reference'' and went one after the other.

THAT is why I dislike SoL, not just because of the brony memes (which is an inherent turn-off for me, but whatever) but because they were LAZY brony memes

I don't know, I thought some of The Doctor's stuff sounded more like Doc Brown from BttF than David Tennant. The helmet that Derpy wore in particular. Doctor Who "invented" things that he needed for the episode but he never had his shit lying around in his workshop like Doc Brown did. Oh, and it left us that Chekov's Gun with the fireless fireworks or whatever they were so they could use it in the end.

I figured the Derpy and Doctor scene was used to dump exposition and establish to the audience that the episode was going to focus on background characters.

The nightmare episode lost some points for me because I thought the idea that Luna was torturing herself seemed really dark. Darker than I wanted it to be. His Pennyroyal Academy book literally got picked up for a movie deal before he got a book publisher. It helps that the person directing it, Reese Witherspoon, is apparently a close friend of his.

He wrote the script and the book version at the same time.

The movie is going to be called "Princess Bootcamp" apparently though, which was his original book title.

Oh yeah, I bet some children might find any of those scenes amusing, but I fail to see the point you're trying to make here. Does a single person laughing at something make it automatically funny? This might be biased since I'm gonna talk from a personal experience, but every time I watched Animaniacs or Tiny Toons or Family Guy during my teens, the jokes that were obvious references always fell the flatter to me, because I could tell that there was some context to them that I wasn't aware of. Again, that might've been just me, but usually the most memorable jokes or the most amusing moments are the ones that require no previous knowledge of the matter other than the one that is provided to you
