Over all that is really nice. You have some minor issues that I red lined. Like the ear on the right side as well as that ponys eyes being kinda small to me. Also the necks looked uber thin where they connected to the head. But again it is super nice looking and you could want things like the neck thickness to be diffrent or whatever. Good stuff anon

Color is daunting since it's so much information but if you take it one step at a time it gets easy. Hell, just stick with one color and just work on value. I highly recommend this at any rate. Getting your lights and darks in a work can make or break said piece.

Steal like an artist. Nothing is original. Use this to your advantage.

Well, that would be Photoshop CC.

If you're looking for alternatives to Photoshop, there are free softwares listed in the OP. As a Photoshop user I'd recommend Krita over the other two, personally.

Perhaps not wrong or right, but it's still not a good reason to be drawing. If getting ass pats and praise is the ONLY reason you're drawing, and if you get so obsessed over it, you're not doing yourself any favors. If you're really not enjoying the drawing process, you're not getting anything out of it. Especially if you're not getting that praise you obsess over so much.

Look at others that may be mediocre at best. Certain more simplistic CYOAs, some /b/ drawfags and Silence. While Silence doesn't really seem to have made all that much noticeable improvement, he still seems to be enjoying himself and so he keeps on drawing. Zimbabwe on the other hand, while it's true that he keeps on drawing, he's only as he's admitted many times, driving himself insane and only hurting himself with that mindset he has about drawing

Only thing I recommend is to observe reference from the show. I couldn't find any tutorials on spike either so I ended up just using artist reference and show reference to figure it out. Just experiment a lot and make mistakes to learn from.

Fucking this. If you don't know how a sketch is supposed to look then you weren't observing this thread. There are plenty of posters who show the construction phase of their drawings and who experiment with anatomy and proportions.

And stop using that gaudy pen. Use a brush that's less opaque that can be uses for sketching. If you can't line (you can't) then keep it sketchy but clean it up a bit.

I wish I could comment but I'm a complete beginner to painting digitally. The fact that you're trying puts you on the right road.

The colors look good (to my untrained eye) and there's nothing too jarring going on. There some nice composition going and my eye is drawn to the sunset. Perspective on the fence on the left seems a little off but its nothing that stands out right away. Pony in the tree is a little strange only because she's isn't adding much to the "story" that's going on. If there's no clear reason why she's napping in the tree then maybe she shouldn't be there. But if you chalk it off as a silly slice of life type of thing then I'd say that's fine.

Hey, someone posted on Derpibooru trying to get more anons to show up here. I've been doing some traditional stuff recently but have the typical problem of being able to see all of my errors the second I finish a sketch.

I've posted here before but decided to step away until I "got gud." I don't think I'm really there yet but I'm still terrified of posting my amateur mistake filled artwork and being compared to Zim or some shit. That being said I'm keeping an eye on this thread. I'm mainly focusing on portraits of ponies for now. Maybe I'll post one if I really put work into it.

I know you want critique on the pony itself but the thing the that sticks out to me the most is your thick, uncontrolled lines. It's a sign that you aren't being "loose" with your drawing and that you're pressing down too hard on the pencil. Work on getting rid of this heavy-handedness. I can elaborate a little. Aside from the pose itself being stiff, spike isn't properly grounded. It's like his entire body and limbs aren't adhering to gravity. Almost like the way one can imagine a body stiffening up when being electrocuted. Put your reference side by side and you'll see what I mean. Tracing can give you an idea of what you're doing wrong.

I'll give you a tip when it comes to construction. How you go about putting facial features solely depends on what you're personally used it and practice. You can follow vague advice in the beginning but soon you'll be doing it a way that's unique to you. Like where you set the eyes; I personally put the eyes to where the bottom of the eye is just a tad below the horizontal axis. That lines also acts as a placeholder of where the cheeks are and where the jawline MIGHT be. Notice even when I describe my method it isn't concrete. I can change things on a whim and I don't let the undersketch control me. This takes experimentation to learn and "feel out".

If the far cheek was where you put it, it would change the shape of the far eye entirely.

for the placement of the red line. I work off of what you've already done. As you can see it's easy to build the cheek off the horizontal facial line. That's generally where any cheekbone codes for mammals, and mammals with larger eyes such as this you can see the bottom of the eye dips down under that horizontal line. As for my accuracy I'm not 100%, no one ever is. The horizontal guideline will move either up or down depending on what direction the faces looking. If the head is upturned a bit the horizontal guideline is also going to upturned a bit as well.

I did say I was not 100% correct. But just the shape of that far I would be a lot different. Also the cheek that I had true could be shaved down a bit in the upper part of the brow should be exposed as well. But again a redline is not something that is supposed to be 100% accurate, more of an editable blueprint that fixed major issues.

Maybe this will help a little. This is how I think of the head from any angle. I try to imagine these forms in different perspectives. The shaded part on the bottom would contain the muzzle and the mandible. Of course this doesn't account for the mouth being open nor does it account for expression nor gender. This is just the default mare proportions that I give myself to work with and I can manipulate it via experimentation. Keep in mind this had changed over time so how I draw mare heads 2-3 months from now may be entirely different.

All i had was a piece of cardboard since i am at work.

A. changed the head shape just a little. Put the nostril in the right spot. nostril placement can be used to give the illusion of muzzle depth if done correctly. Made the jawline more rounded. Put the eyes more in perspective. Remember that the furthest eye is going to be more of an ellipse since it's on a rounded surface.

B. Jutted out the booty and changed the position of the left rear leg in order to balance the pose correctly. The way I did it is still a little"off" but maybe it'll give you a better clue on what you need to do to balance a stance like this.

C. Changed where the left foreleg is coming from. You had it way too far back for the perspective you gave the neck and body.

Keep in mind that my rendition could be more looser but I tried to keep it in the confides of your original drawing. Drawing a "line of action" may help make your poses less stiff.
