Yeah, I find it to be a good compromise between the wildly varying tech levels. Slightly towards the low end of the curve, because Equestria doesn't go to war much.

Actually this makes a lot of sense, considering their inexperience of war. They develop a ton of stuff for civilian use, find new technologies (Magic is used for a lot of things though), but never advance past flintlocks in war.

I remember reading a thing once (though I'm not sure how accurate it is) that unless a society has near-constant war, they are unlikely to advance far past flintlocks simply because they're good enough for casual conflict.

I don't doubt though, that with their relatively advanced technology elsewhere, ponies could advance quite quickly should push come to shove.
