The players choose two parents, and the player is the kid.

The question is, do I have them pick one parent (mother or father) and should that parent be chosen from premade or should it be another known character?

Picking non fighter parents will give you access to noncombat skillsets like persuasion and deception skills.

The kids skillset will be a combination of the two, with preference to the mother or the father as per player choice.
