He searched about for some explanation, but the plain, rough bottom of the pool gave nothing except for a landing perched high upon the wall of the deep end and a line of numbers measuring the depth.

Whatever reason, whether the home had been remodeling or repairing some unseen leak, he didn't know, and there was no one around to ask, save for one.

The looming pony, bright and sparkly eyed, watched him enthusiastically from just outside of the pool's steps. She stared at him, seemingly waiting for something to happen while he also waited.

She gave no hint. Nothing, save for an equine blink.

He started for the steps, keeping his focus trained on her. As soon as he touched the bottom tier, she gave an angry snort. Her face contorted into an expression unbecoming of a creature so colorful. Malevolence.

A hoof reached out towards him and he jumped off the stairs. She leaned forward, letting her limb pursue until he was out of reach. The crack of the stone tile pool deck breaking under the immense weight whenever the pony took a step kept him running until his shoe splashed into the puddle of water.

He only had a few feet until the back wall. He stopped and whirled around to a view of the monsterhorse. Her torso hovered over the front end of the pool, her legs stretching to the surrounding edges to keep her body from dipping below the deck.

She grinned at his distress, a distinct flavor of superiority. She lazily let herself down, a great thump of her body planting itself over the stairs. The exit was now blocked by her fuzzy chest, neck craning up with that bemused smile.

He followed one outstretched foreleg to that same hoof from earlier, hovering above him. Its descent was quick, casually pressing down on him, centered underneath its mass.

She snapped from a decorative copse of palm trees to his sudden movement. He took a step before the hoof came back down, once again centered over his head. He fought against her, his hair matting as a bead of her sweat dripped down along the edge of her hoof to splash on the ground around him.

The pressure was dull for a moment. The hoof stopped for the barest fraction of an instant, but the resistance collapsed. This time, he was watching the depth stick as well.

The danger stopped when she let up. No sooner did it lift enough for him to see her then the pony was staring at the line on the wall. She studied the depth markers and frowned. Evidently this was not what she wanted. She snorted dismissively when he tried to call for her attention. Instead of an answer to his questions, he was thrown into shadow by the same oppressive hoof.

He growled and yelled at her as he tried to stop what felt like a wall coming down on him.

But she merely looked away or busied herself with adjusting her position. The deck tiles moved and clinked under her shifting weight. Her rear wiggled uncomfortably and in her discomfort he caught sight of strange markings across her flanks. He questioned whether she was herself a slave in a large scheme, the image too distinct to be anything but branding or painting.

The creature abruptly stopped squirming and he followed along the contours of the body to her head. She was looking back at him with a discomforting look, lips pursed. She narrowed her eyes and a patch of darkness crept down the side of the pool to stop over him.
Break time was over.

He scrambled to his feet and she pressed again. He was already braced when the mass of flesh draped over him.

He pushed back, letting it give slightly for a moment to tense and coil his muscles like a spring. With a hard-fought push, he reversed the fall.

His hands buried into the sole of the hoof trembled. He could feel a dull throb out of step with his own aches and pulse. A quick, excited drum bass beat. Was that her heart? It was racing for reasons unknown to him. Was she excited? Nervous that he was winning? He was getting better, but it was a war of attrition. He was certain that he would lose eventually.

She removed the burden and when their eyes made contact, she had her ears straining attentively forward. He had her attention now for sure. He tried talking but again she looked away and yawned lazily.

The cold shoulder wouldn't last. He took an agonizing step forward. Then another. His knees stung but compared to fighting against her hoof, it was nothing.
