Starlight actually came closest to this when she was convincing the bullies not to bully Fluttershy, because that was an ideological argument Twilight could not refute without looking horrible. Sadly, for the most part it still relied on her being magically apt.

We need a villain who *doesn't* use magic. Someone who manipulates; someone who uses lackeys properly. Someone like a Moriarty.

I could forgive all the large scale spectacles and 'habbenings' put in the show if they do this and do it right for the series finale. And bump up the melodrama, and sappiness while they're at it. Have the mane six really get invested in one simple, slice of life tier problem more than they ever did battling ancient evils or power mad unicorns.

This is actually what I loved when I first saw Discord. He doesn't use his full power. He could have hidden the elements anywhere, but he deliberately put them where the mane 6 would find them. He wanted to win without brute force because when you are immortal and super powerful, brute force is boring, and Discord was in it for fun.

He has lots of power, but he only uses it for minor gimmicks. His real tactics are psychological, showing the downside of each pony's element. And we see this even through his reformation. He prefers getting his way with words.

So, I just had a thought... at the end of the finale, the map did something magic to the time portal and scroll, making it disappear in a huge flash. What if the map tree absorbed its time magic, and that's how it's been manipulating events through the past so that everyone's elemental destiny is locked in place?

Also, what if now that the tree has absorbed Starswirl's spell, Starswirl has the chance to travel to Twilight's time? He could bring additional villains with him from mythology.
