It was inspired by animu in the first place dumbass. It literally took the formula of the Slice of Life genre of the medium (with shows like Azumanga Daioh and Lucky Star) and just slapped ponies onto it. Even the art style is obviously animu influenced.

The point I'm trying to make is that a fandom can't be a substitute for individuality. When people believing that a fandom is a perfect definition for themselves outnumber regular fans, it's a clear indication that said fandom has gone over the tipping point.

My statement about the dying animu fad is due to the fact that I still remember how it was once. Sure, it was different, slower, but animu still had that "niche" flair that used to attract outsiders. Now, it's mostly something for initiates, and the industry is definitely moving into that direction ("why trying new things when we can just cram out tropes we know people will like?").

Keep in mind, I'm not saying that 'animu is crap', neither that it will die tomorrow. But, in my opinion, is a fad that's definitely slowed down a lot and there's a realistic chance that it will become another passing interest like many others before it.

Have you watched any anime at all in the last 2 or 3 years? Anime is more well known in the west now more then ever. Hell the fact there is readily available source of new content just strengths this.
