You're in a tavern. Suddenly, the door bursts open and everyone is frozen in place. Everything goes silent. The air is stagnant and your food is rotten. An old stallion tells you years have past, and you've been brought back from stone to fight the medusa that caused this mess.

A set of knocking on the door rouses you from your sleep.
Guhhh...
You take a look around yourself.
The sheets are tousled around the bed and floor, tossed around the night prior, and Eve and Jet are still asleep curled up beside you.
She must have rolled off some time during the night.
Last night... Yeah. That was a night.
You're glad you bought the separate room.
Gods, you're sore.
You can see yourself spending the better part of the day flying around.
You doubt you can walk, and even if you could, you'd probably be walking with a limp.
You have no idea how Eve or Jet will fare once they wake up.
You still feel a bit sticky, and the room doesn't have much ventilation despite the walls being made of clouds. There's still that lingering scent of sex.
The knocks on the door returns and Gisela's voice sounds through.
>"Blitz. Guys? Come on, it's late. Let's get a move on."

You try to keep your voice at a volume such that Gisela can hear but that you don't disturb the two sleeping ponies too much.
They still end up stirring, but you rub their backs to calm them down.
>"Around ten? The Guild Hall opened up hours ago."
"Uhh, give us a bit. Grab a bite, hang out, do whatever. We'll meet up with you guys downstairs once we get cleaned up and ready."

You faintly hear her pawsteps as she walks away, presumably to let the others know, and you nudge Eve and Jet awake.

They slowly stir awake, rubbing their eyes and stretching their limbs as they lay on the bed.
"Morning. Gisela just came by. Come on, let's clean ourselves up and meet with the others."
Jet yawns.
>"I'll clean you up all right," he says tiredly.
"Jet, no. For real, let's hit a shower and get ready for the day."
Eve yawns and tries to climb out of bed, but her hind legs buckle as soon as they hit the floor.
"Eve! Are you okay?!"
>"Yeah, I'm fine."
Shocked awake from the harsh landing, recollection shines through Eve's eyes and she blushes madly, covering herself up with the bed sheet.
Jet tries to climb out of bed too, but he has the same problem.
He doesn't stumble --maybe he expected it-- but all the same, he's having trouble walking straight.
You haven't yet exited the bed, but it dawns on you that the room doesn't have its own restroom.
If anything, the inn might have some sort of communal, semi-private bathroom somewhere.

Nothing to do but hope for the best, you suppose.
You crawl out of the bed and just like you expected, you stumble, unable to keep your balance on wobbly, sore legs.
Looks like you're flying for a while.
Jet doesn't seem to care at least and Eve can fly too, so it shouldn't be too bad.
"If I knew any better, I would've picked a room that had its own bathroom. I don't know if any of them actually have their own bathroom, but it probably would've been worth spending the extra money if they had a room like that."

"That would have helped too. Welp, let's just hope no one else is there. You guys good to go?"

"Eve?"
>"Uhh... Y-yeah. Actually, you find the bathroom first and I'll follow once it's open."
You float over to the door and peek your head out into the hallway.
Looks clear.
You gesture to the Jet to follow as you duck into the hall and search for the restroom.
At the far end of the hall, you find a door with a shower sign on it and push it open.
To your immense relief, and you're sure to Eve's as well, it's totally empty.
You wave her down from all the way down the hall and after one last check to make sure no one's around, Eve zips towards you, her short tail tucked between her legs.
She locks the door behind her and breathes a sigh of relief as you lead them to a shower stall.
There are walls between the multiple shower heads, implying that the room normally has ponies showering somewhat together, but it seems Jet's content to share your stall.
Despite the night you shared with her, Eve takes her own stall and you hear the hiss of running water fill your two stalls.

Maybe you should be worried about her, but then again, it's probably nothing.
Sure, you had a raunchy night of sex with her, but Eve will still be Eve. You wouldn't have her any other way.
Minds can get clouded with lust in the heat of the moment, and now that your heads are relatively clear, she's probably all flustered about what happened last night.
She's fairly independent too. You'll give her her space.
Speaking of...
"Jet, please. No offense, but I could use some personal space every once in a while."

You just give him a look.
>"We just spent the night together! What's a shower after that? I'm not even doing anything!"
"Jet."
He holds your gaze for just a moment longer with a pleading look before he breaks eye contact.
>"Okay. I'm... I'm doing it again. I got it. I'll just uhh... be right over there."
He slinks out of your stall to the one next door and you hear his set of running water wash over him.
You love the guy, you really do, but he needs to learn.
All alone in the stall, you get to cleaning.
You shampoo and condition your mane and tail, soap up your body. You make sure to scrub in deep to get all the semen, sweat, and other juices out of your coat. Of course, you make sure to take extra care of the area between your legs.
Satisfied, you turn the water off and shake yourself dry before grabbing one of the folded towels off to the side and getting rid of the excess water.
Until you style your mane with some wind, you actually remind yourself of your brother just a bit.
Jet and Eve follow suit. With their short manes, the wet mane look doesn't change a whole lot, and after a towel dry, Jet's mane is back to what it usually is. Eve uses one of the inn's brushes to fix her hair, and you briefly wonder what she'd look like with a messy mane.
You all step out and head back to collect your things.
You head downstairs and find the other three sitting around a table, waiting for you.

"Morning, guys. How was your night?"
>"It was fantastic!" Carver gushes. "Blitz, I can't thank you enough for splitting the rooms. Having my own bed was amazing!"
Gisela and Flashbang share a glance, but you catch Gisela narrow her eyes at her just barely.

>"Yup. Slept well."
>"Nothing happened."
>"What she said."
>"How about you guys?" Flashbang asks, eager to change the subject.
You smile fondly.
"It was a great night."

>"Yeah!" Eve interrupts. "It was real comfortable. Hey, sorry to keep you guys waiting. Are we all ready to head out?"
Carver looks at her strangely.
>"We're ready if you are."
"Does anyone actually know where the Guild Hall is?"
>"I asked around earlier while you guys were still asleep. Apparently the old town hall got repurposed as the Adventurer's Guild Hall. Huge building just at the end of the main road."
"Sounds good to me. Let's head out."
You exit the building into the mid-morning sun, the streets bustling with the activity of countless questing adventurers.
You follow the cobblestone road deep into the heart of the city until you're confronted with a massive, grand-looking cloud building.
If you didn't know any better, you'd think it was the coliseum.
Inside, things are only just a little bit more gritty. The ceiling towers high above the rest of the city, the clear open space a haven for pegasi.
Dining tables take up almost an entire quarter of the floor, where dozens of adventurers share hearty meals.
There's even a large stage where bards perform for everyone.
Most of the floor is open space where ponies can mingle or recruit.
On one wall, you see a large counter manned by official-looking ponies handling papers for many incoming or outgoing groups.
Beside the counter is a huge bulletin board covered by job posters.

You make the counter your first stop.
Ahead of you, the Guild staff struggle to accommodate a crowds of ponies.
There are civilians posting jobs and putting up the fees and rewards, parties taking various jobs, other parties reporting the completion of jobs.
Bags of bits are constantly being exchanged, papers and cards being stamped and traded, and various pieces of proof are being turned in.
Most of what you see being turned in are sheets of paper or letters, but sometimes you do see scales, bones, or bags with non-bit contours being given to the staff behind the counter.
Despite all the busyness, things appear to be quite well coordinated.
Instead of being something like Canterlot stock exchanges, it's actually a lot more like just a very busy food truck or ticket vendor.
Finally, you find yourself at the front desk being served by a uniformed pegasus mare.
She has a beige coat and a russet mane styled in a librarian's bun.
She's wearing square-rimmed reading glasses, a cherry red neckerchief, and a grass green coat with matching red lining.
A frizzled strand of hair sticks out from her bun but she tries to maintain a happy-to-serve attitude.

"We're actually new here. Could you maybe tell us how this process works?"

"Carver, Gis, sit!" To the mare, "Sorry about that. But no, I wouldn't call ourselves rookies. This is our first time in Clousdale and our first time dealing with... this."
You gesture to the counter, the board, the whole room.
>"Still, sorry for insinuations I may have made." She adjusts her glasses and risks a glance at Carver and Gisela, who are sitting on the floor grumpily. "So! Uhm, where to start... Well, we have several ponies in the back working the typewriters and printers, which we use to--"
"You can skip the bureaucrat stuff. As a group of adventurers looking for a quest, what do we need to know?"
>"Okay, uhm. Ponies of all sorts come to us with a job they would like to get done. They give us the details, the reward they're willing to offer, and a fee for our services."
"They need to pay to have their jobs posted here? Why not just use the regular boards around town?"
>"We're an organization. A credited Guild Hall will get more attention than random boards. If a pony has a request that is particularly important or risky, they'll have better luck leaving it to us to find someone for them than leaving it to chance on a street board. It's also good for the adventurers since the quests posted here are far more likely to be legitimate. Nopony is going to pay extra for small-fry odd jobs or shady work."
Well, gee. That would have been nice to know yesterday.
"So that's posting the requests. What about taking and turning in jobs?"

She nods and pulls out a vial of swirling flame.

"So how much is the fee?"
>"You have to pay for the flare and the pegasus. Prices vary depending on the distance and danger of the location our envoy needs to travel. The flare is a flat 15 bits and travel expenses usually range anywhere from 20 to 40 bits. But don't worry, if you can pay that initial fee, most quests we have here will pay for that and much more! Now, that said, how can I help you?"
"We're here for a job."

"No, no! We're looking for a job to accept."
>"O-oh! Of course, of course! I would be happy to help you find a quest right for you! But, uhm, could you be more specific?"
"Specific how?"
>"Well, is there a certain number of bits you were looking to be rewarded? Maybe you're looking for a certain monster to slay, or material to collect, or maybe you wanted to escort a caravan? Maybe you're looking for something to do in a certain town? Maybe you're looking for something else? Just ask the question and I'll try to help you to the best of my ability!"

Hmmm, the hide and herb quests totalled 100 bits, so maybe something worth at least double or triple that, considering how simple those were. I'm sort of wondering if rewards like that might be too low for a place like this to offer though, so if they don't, maybe something more like quintuple since we have our entire party together. There's other stuff to consider, but that would be a good start, I guess.

For tomorrow, a caravan escort or something similar that takes us to the next town would probably make a good plan for when Flash is back to 100%.

"Yup," you say nervously. "Real good thing we got up so late, ha ha. Well! If Flashbang is good to go, I guess that opens a few more options!"
>"We have exactly 70 bits between us, so something that pays well with that budget would be good," Eve tells the guildmare.
>"And include travel quests," Gisela adds. "A caravan escort or anything like that that takes us someplace east would be good too."
The guildmare nods before shuffling through countless papers, reading them off as she finds them.
>"If you want money, I've got one to collect ores from Galloping Gorge. 30 bit fee paying 180 for a few bags. I have another to go south into the hills by Canterlot. Some noble is paying top bit to recover some toy that got lost there. 50 bit fee but paying 400 bits to get the thing back. That place is real dangerous though, being right next to Canterlot. And remember, there aren't any fees at all if you decide to turn in the quest and items in person."
She continues.

After reading the other responses, I think I'll go with those recommending asking what the general range of pay is to do a job requiring a party of our size. Then take one of the mid to mid-higher paying jobs in that bracket. Personally I like fetch-quests, though an escort lets us meet new folks. I'm up for anything though.

Cloudsdale is pretty smack dab in the middle of most of these places.
Galloping Gorge and the Canterlot hills are both about as far as the river you went to yesterday to pick those herbs, except in different directions, so either of those would be about half a day round trip.
Traveling to Neighagra Falls would take about that long one way, and the journey to Hollow Shades would probably take the entire day, not to mention having to move at the caravan's speed.
"Do you guys have any preferences as to what we do next?"
>"I'd rather just get a move on," Gisela answers first. "Caravan or cave, I could do with either. Though I'm leaning towards the cave if it means getting to check out the Falls," she finishes with a grin.
>"I choose either the hills or the cave," Carver says. "Those ones sound the most exciting. I don't really want to pick rocks or babysit a wagon."
>"As curious as I am about the cave, I think it's best if we pick a job that helps somepony else," Eve says. "I think finding a toy for someone is really sweet, but I'd be really interested in getting supplies to Hollow Shades."

He thinks for a moment.
>"I can't say I have a preference. Well, I'd rather not do one of the fetch quests. Money shouldn't be an issue once we finish one of the other ones."

Even when your party narrows it down to just either the caves or caravan, you're still having a hard time deciding which to take.
You were this close to just flipping a bit.
But in the end, you've made your choice.
"We're going to Neighagra Falls to investigate the cave."
Gisela and Carver seem excited, and though Flashbang and Eve express a small amount of disappointment, no one complains.
>"Don't feel too bad about not taking the others," the guildmare addresses Eve in particular. "Remember, it's our job to make sure they get done, so even if you didn't take it, somepony else will."

>"Alrighty then! Give me the 50 bits and I'll get you set up!"
You hand over the money and in return, the guildmare passes you one of the flame vials and a slip of paper stamped with the guild's seal: two stylized pegasi facing each other with swords crossed.
On the slip of paper, one half describes your party while the other half describes the quest.
Apparently, you're to meet the client when you reach the Falls, and that pony will give you further details. The slip does describe the client and where to find them.
It also mentions that the quest will be considered incomplete without confirmation from the client. You assume they have some way of tracking that too.

"And thank you for all your help!" To your party, "I do hope we come back here when we're done though. Cloudsdale seems like a great town to get some information on what happened in Canterlot."

For your own sake of mind, you clarify that by half day, you meant half of the time that the sun is out, not half of an entire day cycle.
The trip to Neighagra Falls should take about as long as going to that river yesterday and back to Cloudsdale.
Which you did, and that didn't take until midnight to get back. Leaving around noon would mean getting there at sunset.
In any case, at the very least you could ask the guildmare for info as long as you're right here.

"I wanted to ask about Canterlot."
The guildmare scrunches up her nose and her glasses sink down her snout. Readjusting them, she answers.
>"There are no quests involving Canterlot at the moment."
"But there used to be?"
>"A long time ago, yes. Back during the Guild's beginnings, there were requests to search for belongings or loved ones. After many failed expeditions and the few reports from returning travelers, it was deemed that there was nothing left to save, and even if a client wanted someone sent out there, the guild wouldn't allow it."
"Do you know what happened when Canterlot fell?"
>"Uhm, a medusa came out of nowhere and turned the city to stone? I'm not sure what else to tell you. You're going to have to be more specific. Sorry."

She coughs before continuing.

Your original party glance at each other awkwardly. Carver shrugs, but Flashbang's face grows dark at the memories.
>"I think we're just coming up on two decades soon? Yeah, I remember last Harmony Week was cancelled. Pretty much all the non-ponies have left Equestria to settle in their own lands after what happened."
So there's your number. Almost 20 years have passed during that split second in the tavern.

Business done at the Guild Hall, all that's left is to make final preparations before you set out.
You make a quick fly-around of the city, taking note of any local landmarks.
Weapon shops, armor shops, general survival gear shops, potion stores, enchantment stations.
Medbays, recruitment areas, cart rentals, food places, training grounds. You do manage to find a library and even a bank too.
You regroup with the others and take inventory.

As you look through your things, you remember the two vials you took from the imp shop thieves, and the one Jet took from the lighthouse way back when.
You ask Jet if he can identify them and after tasting a bit of each, he tells you.
The ones off the thieves were narcotics. Get it in the victim's system and they'll pass right out. The one from the lighthouse is something he calls Potion of Second Wind. It won't heal wounds, but it'll give someone that extra boost to just keep going.

Before you leave, you stop by a general supply store and buy six torches, 30 feet of rope, and a pickaxe.
After paying the 12 bits, you pass out a torch to everyone and give Eve the rope and the pickaxe to Carver. At three weapons each, you and Gisela are already carrying a bit much, and Jet and Flashbang aren't particularly strong in the first place.
You spend the last eight of your bits on food for the road.
Flat broke again. Maybe you should have dipped into that thief stash instead of giving almost all of it away to those ingrates...
Granted, you probably won't need any for a while since you'll be traveling and spelunking, having money at all for a time was nice. And you'll get paid almost 300 bits when you finish the quest.
Ready to move on, you gather the others and leave the massive gates of Cloudsdale behind you as you progress towards your next destination: Neighagra Falls.

After several hours of travel, the afternoon suns beats down on your party as you reach the halfway point.
Nearby on the grassy plains, other ponies do their own field work.
The river where you picked those herbs looms nearby. According to the map, that river leads straight to the Falls.
You and Flashbang make sure to leave ample space between it and you as you settle down for a rest.
As Eve hands out the lunch, you catch Flashbang casting wary glances at the river.
You follow her gaze, and if you didn't know any better, you'd think it was a very innocuous, pleasant-looking stream.
But below the surface, your sharp eye catches the ripples of creatures swimming underneath, a bigger creature mixed in with the movements of smaller ones.

"There's a town?"

As you talk, you notice that many of the smaller ripples in the water have disappeared.

Taking a sip from your waterpouch to wash down your meal, you check on the river again.
You really don't like that some of the smaller ripples just disappeared.
Can... can leeches go on land? That one that stuck itself on Flashbang seemed fine out of the water. How far on land can they travel on their own?
Heart pounding, you search the nearby grass for any leeches that might be sneaking up on you, and you let out a relieved sigh when you don't spot anything.
An audible splash from the river grabs your attention, but when you look, you only catch the falling droplets of some aftermath.
The water around the splash turns a tint of green, the same color as the leech blood from yesterday, and you watch the water ripple as something big travels upstream, in the direction of the Neighagra Falls lake.

Watching the large ripples move away leaves you unnerved.
You think you should be excited to find something that eats those leeches, but all you can think about is how whatever it is could potentially eat you or your friends.
Without even having seen this thing, it's already bringing back bad memories of those wurms in the Smokey Mountain caves. Except this time instead of a dirt monster it's a water monster. Much worse.
You'll deal with it when you need to. Hopefully you won't need to, but all the same, you take comfort in the steadily growing charge of your halberd as time passes on.
Everyone finishes up eating and soon enough, you're all marching again, making sure to give the river a wide berth as you follow it eastward.
Hours pass, and the river widens more and more until the land surrounding the body of water becomes so distant, you'd almost think you were staring off into the ocean.
On the far side of what you know must be the Neighagra Falls lake, the mist from the falling waters cloud any sort of view of your actual destination.
It almost looks as if a thick cloud is spewing a blue rainbow into another thick cloud below.
On the right shore, the eastern and southern sides of the lake, a jungle paints the scene green as it stretches from a south-going fork in the river all the way to the Falls.
The lake itself seems fairly calm on the surface. Well, as calm as you'd expect being fed by a giant waterfall.
There is a relatively open space between the jungle wall and the lake shore, but you're not sure how close to the water you're willing to get, or if trekking through the jungle itself is any safer.

You keep your senses peeled as you walk the path between the lake shore and jungle wall.
Even Eve is extremely cautious, her eyes narrowed into slits and her ears swiveling this way and that.
Just walking this path, everything seems perfectly calm.
There's no noise from the jungle, and the lake looks beautifully pristine.
All the same, you can't shake the feeling of something lurking in both, just waiting for you to step within its grasp.
As you near the titanic falls, you see a silhouette out in the lake.
Partially hidden by the mist, you see what looks like a small boat. You can't quite make out if there's anyone on it.

You crossed the river fork once you started following the jungle wall.
From where you are, you try to spot the town.
Your eyes scan the falls and its neighboring area once again, and this time you do see what must be the town.
Built into the cliffside right next to the waterfalls, you see the shapes of several buildings laid out into rows over one another.
Between the heavier mist and jungle foliage, you can't tell if there are any buildings on ground level.
You're somewhat curious about the boat though.
"Do you guys see that?" you ask, pointing in the direction of the boat.

Eve and Gisela squint out in the direction you're pointing.
>"The mist is too heavy. I can't make anything out."
>"Me neither. Why? What do you see?"
"I think it's a boat."

You continue down the path, slowly nearing the cliffside town.
The tree line ends and the buildings come into view.
It looks like a whole village has been built into the wall, every single one of them slick with water from the spray of the roaring waterfall nearby.
The only safeguard against ponies slipping off are rails and fences running along wooden walkways.
You see a set of stairs dug out into the cliff going up a few stories, but it looks like the builders gave up on that halfway through.
Where the stairs are clearly defined on the lower levels, past the third row or buildings they just sort of devolved into a lazy incline before disappearing altogether into sheer wet rock.
Although stairs and pegasi exist, you see many ponies riding rudimentary pulley elevators to travel between levels.
The buildings are mostly shacks, and the same goes for those on the ground floor.
Beside one of the ground floor buildings nearer the falls and lake, a small gate blocks the way into a cave dug out into the cliffside.
A brief glimpse shows you lanterns lining the insides of the cave and a set of minecart tracks leading into the depths.
Pulling out the quest slip, you find that this is your client's address, but when you knock on the door, there's no answer.

With that in mind, you set out and start looking.
You, Eve, and Gisela fly up to the higher levels while Jet, Carver, and Flashbang take the lower levels.
You don't spot anyone that matches that description, so you start asking around.

The settlement is placed a safe distance away from the falls, and the cliffside buildings cut off before any of them have a real risk of being hit by the falling water.
All the same, the infinite mist and spray leave the entire area perpetually wet.
Approaching the shore, you wipe the building water from your brow, your exposed body already starting to get soaked.
At least your armor is keeping most of you dry. The thing is practically a wetsuit.
Gisela's fur sticks and spikes wildly, but the huge grin on her face tells you she's loving it out here.
The roar of the massive waterfall drowns out all other noise as you and Gisela begin your flight over the lake proper, cautiously staying at a high height to avoid the menacing surface.
Despite the crashing water, at this distance the mist isn't nearly as obtrusive, and soon enough, both you and Gisela easily spot the boat.
It's actually quite sizable. The design and size of the cabin lead you to believe that it may have been a passenger boat used for tours on the lake once upon a time.
You and Gisela drop down and find the cabin door unlocked and open.
Inside, several disheveled and tightly-packed bunk beds eat up most of the space along with diving and spelunking gear.
What grabs your attention though is a pony fitting Softshell's description laying on the floor, wet and unconscious.
His hind leg is heavily and hastily bandaged. Although he is unconscious, he looks to be stable.

You squeeze further into the cabin and get a closer look at the pony.
Aside from the eyes that you can't see, it does match your client's description to a tee.
His hair and fur are matted down and soaked with water, and his breathing is calm.
You can't make out any other apparent injuries.
Carefully, you unwrap the wet bandages, mindful not to disturb whatever wound lies beneath.
You peel away the last of the wrappings and get a good look at his injury.
You see several small star-shaped patterns trail a path around his leg, almost as if an octopus tentacle had asterisks instead of circles for suction cups.
The star-shaped wounds are composed of little pin pricks in his skin that make up the shapes.
All around the trail of the wound, it looks as if the fur some skin has burned off. Potentially an acid?
It doesn't look like it's spreading at least. The damage seems to have run its course.

You try to shake him awake to no avail. He's out cold.

Gisela passes you the kit, but it looks nearly empty.
Either he came out here with very little or he's already used most of it up. Possibly both.
Among the dwindling generic first aid supplies, you do manage to find a few bottles, one labeled Potion of Healing and two labeled Potion of Water Breathing.
You find several more bottles with those labels and a few labeled Remove Poison and Remove Paralysis, but all of those ones are empty.

With far too much excitement for the situation, Gisela hops over Softshell to take the wheel.
You can't tell if she's playing around or if operating this kind of boat is that complicated, but suddenly the boat lurches forward.
For a moment you think you're under attack, but an excited "Woooooo!" from Gisela calms you.
Looking out the windows, you do see the ship moving steadily and speedily back to shore.
Watching Gis pilot this ship, she really reminds you of a pirate. Crossbow in one hand, sword in another. All she needs is a hat.

You and Gisela rush out onto the deck to check out the damage.
The dock is now nothing more than busted planks of wood scattered about, and the ship has very noticeable scratches and marks and dings.
It... it doesn't look great. Not completely destroyed or anything, but it's clear that it took some damage.
"It's fiiiiiiine. We can buff those out easy."

"All those little dents and scratches. I really hope we don't have to pay for any of that."

He turns to Eve and tosses his head your way as a gesture to take him up to the deck.
She wraps her hooves around him and flies him up as you answer.
"I think our guy ran into some trouble before we got there. We found him lying on the floor of the cabin unconscious with a weird wound on his leg."

He regards Gisela with suspicion but enters the cabin.
The crash knocked over a bunch of random junk, some pencils, old food or drinks, some bits.
Jet wades through the mess until he reaches the downed pony and starts inspecting the wound.

Using the tip of his dagger, he pokes and pries at one of the dots of a star. His horn glows, and he pulls out what almost looks like the tip of a syringe.
>"Approximately two centimeters in length. Appears to have snapped inside the subject. Needle and state of inflicted area suggest a payload of toxins."
"Wait, so every single one of those pricks has a needle in it?!"
There must be about a dozen asterisks trailing around his leg, each with at least seven pricks to make the shape.
>"Yeah. I don't know the actual piercing power of the needles or their breaking point, but he did manage to free himself after being grabbed. As for the payloads, I would assume they at least inflict acidic poison. The empty paralysis cures may suggest the needles also inflict that, but there's no way to be sure until he wakes up and tells us. The good news is that despite the needles, the actual damage is low. It probably hurt like hell, yeah, but nothing he won't recover from. It seems the attack is primarily used to incapacitate the target with status ailments and lingering pain."

We could always try giving him the old water treatment or something to see if he'll come around. Jet explains the pony's condition to the others while you lead everyone to his house.
You slide the key into the door and it opens.
The inside of his house is just as cluttered as his ship. The floor is littered with trash, bottles, plants, scales and the like.
There's an oft-used mattress next to what looks like an alchemy station.

You wake up to a myriad of smells hitting your nose. Fruity, fishy, bitter, sour, sweet, and others you can't quite name.
There's also the constant roiling of bubbles as if something is boiling.
You hear the burn of an artificial flame, glass clinking against glass, what sounds like a knife on a cutting board, and the grinding of rock on rock.
You open your eyes and find Softshell awake working at his alchemy station. He's focusing intently on his work and hasn't noticed you awake.

You watch as he chops up and grinds various ingredients in his mortar and pestle before tossing them into various beakers.
Colors change and swirl, and he mixes the fluids in with other vials and containers he has set to the side.
He picks one up, looks at it closely, and sniffs at it before tilting his bead back and pouring a small amount of it into his mouth.
He smacks his lips a few times and smiles with satisfaction.
Finally, you watch him pull a of bowl something closer to him --you can't see what-- and he proceeds to dump various mixtures into it.
He pulls open a drawer and after digging around in it for a bit, he retrieves a spoon.
Nothing special, just a regular eating spoon.
He stirs his bowl a little and brings the spoon to his mouth, eating the mixture as if it were cereal or oatmeal.
It certainly smells like it, actually.
There's shifting around you as your party wakes up.

A chorus of yeses sounds behind you and Softshell goes back to his work station.

I get out of there as fast as I can, back onto my boat, and start taking cures before I pass out. Next thing I know, I'm on my mattress with a bunch of strangers asleep on my floor. You hear the contents snap, crackle, and pop as he passes the bowls out to everyone.
When you're given your bowl, you're surprised to see that instead of powder and colorful liquids, it's just a plain bowl of frosted wheat squares and milk.

You look back down into your bowl. It looks perfectly normal, and it would be rude not to eat it. Not to mention you like your cereal crunchy.
You bring a spoonful of it into your mouth.
"Oh, that's pretty good!"

"Seems pretty useful. So about that cave," you bring up, eating another spoonful of cereal. "I'm guessing it's the one for your quest from the Adventurer's Guild?"

Your heart jumps in your throat when you remember the damage you and Gisela did, but to your immense relief, Softshell ignores everything about his boat's condition and simply climbs up the ropes to the deck.
Everyone follows and Softshell somehow drives the boat off the shore back into the lake.

You drop everything but your armor and halberd. Your armor shouldn't be too bad in water, but you're not sure how effective your crossbow will be. Not to mention your crossbow is heavy and bulky.
Jet decides to wear his dragonscale coat for the same reason, and he brings Kindness' Dagger and his medkit. The dagger is lightweight and his kit should be sealed.
Gisela drops the map and her shortsword. She seems confident enough to bring her crossbow along. You think it's less that she's not comfortable with the longsword and more that she thinks it's best to have a ranged option. It's also much lighter than yours.
Eve leaves behind the bestiary, but not before tucking away her photo between the pages.
Flashbang leaves her ingredient pouch behind. Her bombs are magic-operated, so they should be fine.
After a great amount of inner turmoil, Carver leaves her armor behind, only taking a set of claws with her. There's no way she could move in water effectively with that thing on.
Finally, everyone reaches around their necks and sets their necklaces down. Those could get lost and no one is willing to risk losing it.
>"Hey," Eve says. "Just treat it as just another reason to make it back."
Her words fill everyone with determination.
Softshell puts on a mining helmet, the kind with a built in flashlight, and secures his potion bag before setting up the farcaster waypoint with Flashbang.
>"Now, everyone drink up," he says, passing everyone what appears to be a bottle of water. "That's the water-breathing potion. Jump in, and follow me as quickly as you can into the cave."
He leads everyone to the deck where the falls drench everyone in water. He brings a hoof to his brow and scans the fall.
Satisfied, he turns to you and says something, but his voice is drowned out by the crash of the falling waters.
As soon as he finishes speaking, he turns and dives into the water.

You down your potion and follow him, the others following closely behind.
There's a series of inaudible splashes as each of you hits the water.
When you open your eyes beneath the water, all you can see is the bubbly froth of the falls and the bleak darkness of the lake's depths.
Further down, you can make out the light from Softshell's helmet.
You swim down, and to your pleasure, your armor near effortlessly glides through the waters, but as you swim, you can't shake the feeling of something menacing watching your every movement.
You dive deeper, and the weight of the crashing waters above pound at your back, but mixed in with that, you feel the unnatural current of something swimming around you, pushing the water towards you as it moves.
You look around, but even you can't see anything out of the ordinary. You just see your friends following behind you, fear etched onto their faces.
They can feel it too.
You speed up, and the others follow your lead and push themselves harder behind you.
Everyone with wings starts flapping to give them an extra boost. Jet manages to keep up only because of his special armor.
Flashbang starts to fall behind, and you're about to go back for her, but a shadow stops you in your tracks.
A faint shadow of a beast not unlike the dragon you fought in Drakesteed swims behind her, its size at least four times as large.
You're sure you're the only one who can see it, but it seems Flashbang can feel it creeping up on her.
In a fit of fear, she turns around and holds out a bomb.
It detonates away from her, shooting her towards the rest of you.
The burst gets her close enough for you to grab and pull her towards Softshell's light.
It leads into a tunnel in the cliffside, and you all follow the tunnel as it slowly bends upward.
With a splash, you break the surface of the water and find yourself in the beginnings of a cave, Softshell's helmet shining light at you.

As if to answer your question, you hear a wet slap hit the floor of the cave. Then another. Then more and more.
Softshell turns his head to direct the light around the room, and you see what looks like countless clear sunny side up eggs with blue, veiny yolks crawling along the floor and dripping from the ceiling.

Immediately, Gisela shoots in the general direction of some of them.
They're not quite a sea of their own, but with how many of them there are, it's hard for her to miss a shot.
Her bolt pierces through several of them, going through the clear bits and popping the blue yolks.
The burst yolks spray into the air with a fine, almost wispy mist, and the whites that held them stop moving, nothing more than slimy goo.
Despite taking out a few with a single shot, the swarm remains strong as if none were popped at all.
Your party slowly backs away from the encroaching mass of oozes.
"Hey Softshell? Anything you can tell us about these things? What to do, what not to do?"
>"The blues aren't actually dangerous as far as I can tell. Trust me, I was scared too when I first saw them, but they just left me alone."
To prove his point, he walks forward and sure enough, they don't react to him at all even when he's in the middle of them.
A few inch towards him idly but don't do anything.

Carver is the first to step forward, and just like with Softshell, they largely ignore her.
After seeing Carver pass through harmlessly, Eve and Gisela are the next to move forward.
This time, they react a little more... actively.
It wasn't much, really nothing to worry about, but they did jiggle excitedly
Up next, you take a careful step forward, keeping an eye on both the ones on the floor and any that may drop down from the ceiling.
You hold your breath reflexively as you step among them, and you think you're in the clear.
But they start following you.
No jumping, no aggressive chasing, but you do seem to have the attention of a few, definitely more than the others.
Still maintaining your sense of caution, you get off the ground, especially mindful of any on the ceiling.
Finally, Jet and Flashbang walk forward.
Before they even reach the middle of the swarm with the rest of you, the oozes start crawling towards them.
Jet and Flashbang freeze, clearly not expecting the oozes to act.
With wet slaps, a few oozes fall from the ceiling onto their backs.
Flashbang lets out a startled scream and the oozes start flinging themselves at the pair.

Carver doesn't have a harmony weapon, Softshell's an erf, no magic, no reaction.
Eve and Gis have harmony weapons, ours has more magic than theirs.

As for the action, Carver and Softshell are basically invisible to the slimes, so they should be the ones to combat them.

Their horns glow with the beginnings of magic, but they very quickly flicker away.

Much more panicked, they back away, getting closer and closer to the wall as the oozes jump at them.
One or two manage to latch themselves onto their hooves.
Flashbang starts waving her hoof around, trying to fling it off that way, but it holds fast.
Jet uses his other hoof to try to peel it off, but like a really annoying piece of tape or film of plastic, it just sticks itself onto his other hoof instead.
"Carver, Softshell! Help them out!"
Carver rushes towards them claws drawn, but Softshell stays where he is with a lost expression on his face.
>"Hold still!" Carver commands, and though Jet obeys nicely, Flashbang is having trouble not freaking out.
With aimed swipes and pokes, Carver bursts the yolks of any oozes stuck onto the unicorns, the blue mists dissipating into the air.
But the seemingly infinite swarm keeps coming at them.
You see Jet focus and Flashbang tosses a bomb out into the swarm, but nothing happens with either of them.
Whatever Jet tried to do failed and Flashbang's bomb didn't ignite.
Even if Carver seems to be effectively immune to them, it doesn't look like she's making a whole lot of progress against the swarm.

A few ideas run through your head.
You briefly consider lighting a torch and burning all of them en masse, but not only are none of you carrying torches, you have no way of lighting them.
Everyone left almost everything on the boat, and even then, your lighters are currently being assaulted by blue eggs.
And if Jet's and Flashbang's failed magics are anything to go by, these things are eating and negating their magic.
They're attracted to magic. Maybe you could use your halberd to pick them up like paperclips to a magnet?
No.
For all you know, as soon as they make contact, they'll eat up the charge. You can't risk that. You have to think of something else.
"Jet, Softshell, can't you make some potion to melt these things?"

"Gaahhh! Whatever! Just get them out!"
Gisela switches to her longsword and starts slashing at them, the double hits making a notable dent in the swarm.
You and Eve fly in and grab Jet and Flashbang.
Carver holds them off long enough for you and Eve to get the unicorns to safety before chasing after you.
"Come on! Everyone just run!"
Once you and the unicorns make enough distance, the oozes stop acting and Gisela, Carver, and Softshell get out without any problems.
You keep going until you reach another clearing. This one looks relatively clear, the notable features being three other paths to other parts of the cave.

She lets out a series of high pitched screeches and listens intently.

You go down the declining path, Softshell lighting the way, until you come across a sheer drop.
His light is able to reach the bottom and you can see that the path continues further, but the wall is jagged and long enough that non-fliers wouldn't be able to continue without some sort of assistance.
Listening closely, you can hear something splash about in water.

Eve salutes.

Softshell regards her closely and looks back at the rest of the cave behind him.
After a moment of internal debate, he hands you his helmet.
Eve ushers everyone away from the cliff as you don the headgear.
"I'll be right back, guys. Sit tight."
You face the cliff, leaving everyone else in the dark, and spread your wings to descend.
Once at the bottom, you follow the short tunnel until it opens up to a larger cavern.
Your light reflects off a large pool that takes up almost the entire room, its surface occasionally broken by webby fins.
You can't tell what creature it belongs to, but you can guess that it's at least not a single huge creature in that lake. Whatever they are, those fins maybe look like they belong to something about the size of larger earth ponies.
The path continues along the pool into another tunnel entrance.

Oh boy, I can't see this going badly at all. I guess we should head back and see if the others want to risk it. I'm not really in favor with two of the team disabled. We have no means of making a quick exit from down here if we have to.

You head back to the others and to your relief, they're fine.
>"So? What did you find?" Softshell asks.
"The path keep going into another tunnel but I didn't check it out. Going down the cliff leads to this pool, and I saw fins coming out of the water every now and then."

"Yeah. Webby, looks like whatever they belong to could be about the size of a bigger earth pony. I don't know how many of them there are in there."
>"What's the problem then?"
"I don't know if they can get on land. It puts us at risk having our unicorns disabled, and if anything happens, the cliff means we don't have a quick escape route."
>"So what do you want to do?"
"Whatever we do, we have to go through it together, so I wanted their opinions. See if they're willing to risk it."
You look at your party expectantly.
>"We have enough flyers to carry out Jet, Flashbang, and Softshell in case anything happens," Eve points out.
>"I think we can take on some stupid fish."
>"Carver, you don't have your armor and I can't give anyone a quick fix in case anyone takes any damage."
>"You think four fighters can defend the other three from an attack?" Gisela asks you.

You look to Softshell and he shakes his head.

Behind her back, you see Jet roll his eyes and Gisela pinch the bridge of her beak.

"So that's settled. Let's head back and check out the other paths."
You head back to the branching room.
"As long as we're here, what can you tell us about the path you went down?" you ask Softshell.
>"Well, well, it was a mostly level, winding tunnel with small pools of water along the sides every now and then. I didn't see the end of the tunnel before I felt the tentacle wrap around my hoof."
You nod, taking note of that information as you continue along to the inclining path.
The short hike ends when you come face to face with a similar cliff, except this time it goes up instead of down.
Like last time, you leave the others behind to fly up and check out what's ahead.
You reach the top and after passing through a transition tunnel, you find another large cavern.
The floor of this cavern is covered with sand, interrupted by lumps of varying sizes hiding beneath.
There is a tunnel entrance on the other side of the room.

In case it makes a difference, the lumps are currently unmoving and the sizes range from half a pony to a pony and a half.
The lumps are rounded but somewhat flat.
A quick count tells you there are about a dozen of them scattered throughout the room.

Before you leave, you pick up a small rock and toss it at one of the lumps, taking to the air just in case.
The rock lands square on one of them before bouncing off, and the lump trembles, flecks of sand falling off of it
The lump lifts itself, revealing a pony-sized crab as it skitters to the side towards the offending stone.
It swings its terrifying claw and clamps down on the rock, giving it a squeeze and tossing it away angrily after giving that rock its what-for.
You watch another crab go through the same ordeal as the first one sinks back into the sand, using its claws to bury and hide itself once again.
That's that, then.
You return back down the cliff to the others.
>"What did you find this time?" Softshell asks.
"Crabs. About a dozen of them, pony-sized. There's a bunch of sand up there that they're all hiding under, and another tunnel past that room."
>"So where are we going?" Carver asks you. "What are we going to have to deal with? A bunch of fish, a bunch of tentacles, or a bunch of crabs?"

You return Softshell's helmet and he fastens it on his head happily.

He nods and Carver takes the lead and heads towards the declining path to the little lake, all of you following behind.
You reach the cliff and everyone starts pairing up.
Eve takes Jet, and Gisela takes Flashbang, leaving you to carry Softshell down.
Once down, Carver and Gisela take the initiative, with Softshell following behind to provide the light.
There's that underground lake again, and this time everyone watches as fins emerge and submerge.
>"Remember your job," Softshell tells everyone. "Your mission is to get me to the end, so let's just keep moving."
Carver huffs and even Gisela looks longingly at the pool, but they concede to him and start walking down the path.
Everyone stays by the walls as far away from the edge of the water as possible.
Little splishy splashes sound as everyone walks through puddles that have built up.
Fortunately, nothing jumps out of the lake to attack you or anything, and you all reach the tunnel at the end of the path without incident.
Unfortunately, after following the tunnel for a little bit, it leads further downward into a flooded section.

Softshell nods and digs through his bag before passing out another round of potions.
Popping the corks off, everyone's heads tilt back to down the liquid.
Imbibed with the magical drink, you all enter the water.
You and Eve take the front, Jet, Flashbang, and Softshell take the middle, and Carver and Gisela take the back.
Your mane flows about as you sink towards the bottom of the aquatic tunnel.
Softshell's helmet lights the way through the narrow, winding path until it opens up into a larger underwater area.
The beam of light pierces through the dark waters, revealing a half dozen monstrous fish creatures swimming about.
You would almost describe them as merfolk, but taking on more beast-like traits.
They have long, fishy heads with rows of sharp teeth, and arms and legs with webbed hands and feet. Their fingers and toes are tipped with claws. Long fins run along their backs and limbs. Their long, meaty tails swish about behind them as they move.
None of them seem to have noticed you yet.
You watch as one of them swims upward towards the far end of the cavern before exiting the water.
It has only been a few minutes since you took the potion and you feel its effects still going strong.
The weight of your halberd has been steadily growing, comparable to your glaive, maybe a bit heavier.

You motion for the others to stop behind you.
The others have to understand that you're not here to fight. Right now, the goal is to just get past them.
You bring your hoof to your mouth in a shushing motion before sinking as low as you can to the ground.
Lining up in a train, you all hug the wall and push onward.
Softshell makes sure to keep his light forward, lest he wake the ire of the monsters.
You continue crawling along the corner of the room, making yourselves as scarce as possible, and it seems to be working.
The fish monsters swim about, seemingly paying no attention to any of you.
You reach the halfway point and can see that the roof disappears ahead, opening back up to air and land if the fish that left earlier was any indication.
But as you approach the exit, the bloodied body of a giant toad, at least bigger than a pony, is tossed into the pool, the fish monster from earlier jumping in behind it.
The other fish are immediately attracted to the body, and they swim towards it hungrily.
Still alive, the toad flails in a panic, swimming around in an attempt to escape the predators, trails of its blood spreading throughout the pool.

Sorry dire toad, but your sacrifice will not be in vain.
You motion to your party to keep going.
The toad's blood clouds the pool as the fish attack it, and you can only hope that the fight is happening far away from your destination.
You push through the misty trails until you can see the exit above you.
Quickly but smoothly as to not attract any attention, you swim upwards and pull yourself out of the pool, the others following behind.
Once out, the cave opens to another tunnel, a trail of blood and water running along the ground connecting the pool and wherever this leads.
You weren't going to worry about whatever threw the toad into the pool, but really, you think it's safe to guess that the fish went on a hunt and brought back the meal.
No place to go but forward, you suppose.
As you walk through the tunnel, you can't help but feel light headed, a weak headache starting to pound at your head.
You even have an unusually strong urge to get away from that pool.
It looks like the others are falling to similar fates, their steps not totally straight.
Except Jet. Jet looks fine.

Carver babbles incoherently, and when you try to respond, similar noises come out of your mouth.

Jet laughs to himself at the sight before him.

The feeling in your head starts to disappear and you see the others standing up straighter.
You test your voice.
"Adabluh" You smack your lips. "Hello? Hello? Really? That's it?"
Suddenly, you start seeing stars. Your body and mind feel fine, but your vision becomes overtaken by spots of white light.
It's not blinding or completely debilitating, but it's certainly distracting and you're having a hard time seeing through it.

"Well! Jet! Since you're the only one who can see properly right now, I say you should take point."
Agreeing, Softshell gives him the helmet. Jet straps it on and leads the way through the rest of the tunnel.
You follow, and every time Jet turns his head to look another way, instead of dark emptiness taking the beam's place, a white circle burns itself into the world, fading away as it shifts into different colors.
Jet stops at a split in the path.
The tunnel continues in one direction, but the now colorful blood trail continues in the other.

Everyone quiets down for a moment for Eve to listen, and you watch as her cute ears swivel and flick about.

Those fish monsters could very well just return and maul more frogs, and you don't want to be in the room with them when that happens.
That quiet path is probably the way to go.
Even though you just KNOW that something worse is going to be that way.
Just going through this tunnel is putting you on edge.
This whole time, you've been seeing glints on the walls, but you're not sure if they were actual things or just the hallucinogen messing with you.
Jet hasn't been reacting to anything, but you're not sure if he would be able to see them even if they were there.
This might actually be a case of you just seeing things.
You continue down the tunnel.
Just how big is this cave system?! The end can't be too far.
Then again, maybe you made a mistake since the very beginning.
You really hope this isn't a fruitless dead end. You don't think you could handle having to go back and explore those other paths.
Finally, you see the end of the tunnel as it opens up into another room.
As you approach the threshold, you detect a mild scent of vinegar, but something else catches your attention.
For a moment you think you're seeing things again, but when Jet tilts his head curiously and focuses the light straight on it, you're sure he sees it too.
Softshell gasps behind you.
>"That... That has to be it! It has to be in there!"
A metal chest sits on the floor of the room, a few bits scattered around it.
