I needed an excuse to color something. I mostly want critique on the coloring. I used a palette from a reference and tried to emulate what they had done.

I would focus on shading, your placement of the shadows are fine but the issues are the colors you used for the shadows. try for a darker colors and throw in a bit of colors besides purple, in this case you can add a dark blue to the absolute shadows and blending it with the base color of her coat for the grey area.

I started using a dark blue for shadows but began getting uncomfortable so I ended up going a little of a lighter blue. You can see it under the mouth a little.

Pic related is the reference I used since it was an appealing palette to me. It's always a gamble I take since I feel like such an amateur still. I don't know what "good" looks like so I have to wing it 90% of the time.

even if a colors does start to feel uncomfortable it's better to experiment with it than keep in your comfortable bubble. Try adding a black and white filter or turn down saturation all the way. When you stick to a light and main color you end up creating a very monochromatic look. adding darker shadows helps the other colors pop out more.

You are drawing what you see as oppose to what is actually is there. What you're doing is symbol drawing. You know how to draw the basic shape of 3/4th faces (Maud) but you lack the experience on drawing anything else. Try and use a reference for most confusing poses, or grind out different poses to understand how the pony body works. There is nothing wrong with using references, use them.

One last advice, try and avoid drawing stuff facing sides. Draw everything in the 3/4th angle until you understand the anatomy and can manipulate 2d drawings into 3d. Of course, it's all advice.

If I were to paint it, i would first establish a light source and think what type of environment the picture is in. Don't really want to paint a bright picture in a moody environmebt. I would want to get close to accurate realism reflection as I can without making the picture loom weird.

Eyes are dead and soulless. Work on your eyes more. Draw a ton of them until they look less like a crazy Micky mouse drug addict. Front mane is flat, make the lines curve more towards the back of her head. Flank should end lower and spine needs to have a larger valley curve to it.

All in all, you're improving. Keep it up!

Gonna add to what >>25351645 said: your eyes are definitely adding to the uncanny valley you have going for every work you've done. I drew in the solid block, giant pupil that you tend to do and it just doesn't work and is very unappealing.

Play with expression, too. Eyebrow placement, mouth movements, and even ears all can play a part in the feeling you can give the viewer. You can literally copy paste the same face to practice expression if you want.

The glow would need to be a bit brighter on her, you made it bright enough to reflect off the waves, so why not her face? Try using a water brush color or whatever the semi transparent glow brush is called so it wouldn't ruin the colors off her.

The environment looks good, don't change anything besides maybe adding a couple mountains in the distance, but simple is better in this case.
