***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.

For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

**RANGED GROUPBUILD**

Build/paint a kit (Gundam/Frame Arms/etc) with a loadout focused on long ranged combat! Sniper Rifles, Artillery Cannons, Missile Launchers, Funnels/Bits, and Miniguns are all fair game. You may also include a back-up melee weapons (Like a combat knife or beam saber) with your build, but it shouldn't overshadow your ranged equipment

More clarification here:
>Any scale and any brand is fair game here, you're not limited to just using Gundam models. The base kit needs to be a robot though (Sorry tankfags)
>You can however kitbash a tank with a Zaku/GM or something and submit that.
>The longer the barrel the better. Your average rifle/machine gun on a stock MS isn't gonna cut it.

Has anyone used pla arts pieces? I was wondering how large the bow was, and how flimsy the plastic was. It looks quite thin, and I would like a relatively hefty bow for 1/144 scale, but this isn't in gunpla scale.

Bow's a neat idea for a Gundam but I feel like you'd want a more Compound Bow look for a Gundam. I'd use a bow like that for a Frame Arms Girl if anything.

Whilst the arms are part of the build, it's not a standard bow I'm making, and compound looking arms would be a bit too small for me. I don't want to give too much away so it looks better for the groupbuild. I agree they look a little thin.

You should still consider trying to scratch-build a bow if you can't find anything. The group builds are all about improving your skills after all. As a suggestion the knight of gold's bow is pretty impressive
>>
>>15863903
So do people just decant the cans for airvrushing? That seems inefficient.

I'd urge you to scratch-build first to avoid paying upwards of 3,000 yen just to get the bow. Of course if you did buy it then the rest of the kit could just be fodder for another build

What were they thinking with the Dantalion? Seriously, this has to be the weakest fucking torso connection to the tiniest waist ever on an incredibly heavy kit. It's not even something an AB will fix, I'm going to have to tighten the joint something fierce with glue to the point it'll barely be able to rotate the torso at all.

So the other week I found something interesting at my local hobby shop. It was a self published modeling book by a modeler a state over. He does a wide range of models, and each of the "SM" books is apparently following a couple build he did on a different type.

The third book was on Gunpla.

I have to go back and fix some of the monstrosities young me made out of those poor tanks. It also makes me kind of want to get back into military models again, maybe in a near future.
>>
>>15866591
Either check the official brand statement on their paint and thinner and ratios, look up modelers using it, or test yourself.
>>
>>15866724

Most of the parts on gunpla kits are PS or ABS, where there are no issues. Polycaps have issues but most of the time they don't matter.

>>15866733

I got pretty old kit, according to the scale model general old 1/35 tamiya tanks are supposedly great beginner kits and it was probably the decal size I'm after.

I made like one kit as a kid, it was one of those that came in a bundle with shitty paint so obviously the result wasn't pretty.

I truly understand why snapshit doesn't paint, it's an exercise in fucking lunacy, you'd get nearly the same results from throwing your money into a furnace.
>>
>>15866787

>>
>>15866787

Well it would certainly be a waste of money if you only ever painted that kit, or gave up right now.

If you only wanted to paint one kit you could have used spray cans, but if you want to paint every kit you build the airbrush is the better option despite the start up cost.

>>15866796
I'm just going to skip buying a respirator and if I get lung cancer and die I don't even give a fuck.
>>
>>15866787
Airbrush setups don't even cost that much. You can get the ones in the guide for a $70 airbrush and $100 for the compressor with tank both of which work fine. $10-15 at most for paints on a single model if you buy from a local shop. You getting expensive things you don't need are probably why it cost more.
>>
>>15866787

$450? Yikes! I paid around $130 for both my Iwata Neo CN airbrush and a Harbor Freight Tools 58-psi compressor.
>>
>>15866805
You need a $50 respirator, thinner, cleaner, primer, alligator clips+skewers and probably a whole bunch of other shit I am missing.

Respirator costs $20-30 with the cattstidges already in the box for a half face. Between the thinner being at most $10 for a large amount that lasts many models, using cheap hardware store gunner to clean the airbrush and The clips plus skewers go for like $10 for like 100 of them on Amazon. I want to start airbrushing, and I'm more concerned with space, not cost.

For a proper airbrushing workspace (with all the necessary equipment and moving space), how big of an area should I be free up?
I'd be grateful if anyone could give me an estimate.

Airbrush, compressor, workbench+spraybooth, perhaps a rack/cabinet for the paints jars, cleaning equipment etc.
Am I missing anything? Any suggestions?
I'm thinking of clearing some space in one of my empty rooms and using it as an airbrushing area, so any advice is welcome.

Do I just go for freehanding a soft-edged pattern with the airbrush? Might be jumping into the deep end of the pool.
>>
Looking for a reasonably priced MG since I've never built one before and just wondering if Char's Z'Gok is any good?
>>
>>15867997
You could try drawing camo shapes onto masking tape and cutting them out with a hobby knife
>>
wow panel lining is really hard wtf
>>
>>15868055
if you topcoat the model earlier you can use panel line accent color, otherwise using the lining gundam marker is easy enough since you can just wipe them with fingertips or rubber eraser if you screw up
>>
>>15868062
>Gundam marker

h-heh
>>

the thin, lining gundam marker, GM01 or GM02
not the paint markers.

>>15868073
I'm saying I'm not using a Gundam Marker because I would have to import one.
>>
>>15868080
Just buy a generic micro-tip marker from a craft store. There isn't a real reason to use gundam markers over them if you have to import
>>
>>15868085
I bought microns but this black ink is going on thicker than Gyanko's bush. It also doesn't perfectly adhere to some of the plastic.
>>
>>15868080
any fine tip pen can do it too, just have zippo fluid or rubbing alcohol and you can clean them

Three pack on sale, 01 03 and 05. I assume I can use 01 for HG, 03 for MG and 05 if I ever get a PG.
>>
>>15866279
Anon you replied to: I use the vallejo varnishes aswell and for me they work well. You do need to let them cure properly though, but that goes for all painting stuff.
>>
>>15868205
Hey I thought you got bored and left.

Do you use the flow improver for varnishes? Or a different sized needle? It doesn't want to spray very well for me.
>>
>>15868278

Not that guy but I thin them a fair amount and use flow improver. 0.4 needle.
>>
>>15868020
The Z'Gok is great, having just built it. I'm not entirely sold on polycap joints, especially on MGs, but it doesn't really hinder the kit in any way. The build is also out there compared to normal gundam designs, but nothing complicated. Just be aware that it is an older MG, doesn't mean it's bad, it's just no Freedom 2.0

Man it feels nice to use for something I got for £25, can't wait to practice on some spoons tomorrow.
>>
>>15868379
Polycaps are a godsend. HG Nobel Gundam put me off polycap-free kits for life, the joints are so damned stiff that the hips are completely locked and the wrists are designed to snap.
>>
>>15863540
A match made in heaven
>>
>>15868443
Maybe I should specify ball-joint polycaps on 1/100s and MGs, tho I'm still not a fan of them in general in larger kits, I do see their place
>>
>>15868116
No, 005 is the only thing small enough for any panel lines
>>
I need to get over my sunk cost fallacy and realize that Gunpla is a shitty fucking hobby that I am never going to enjoy or be remotely good at. Just cut my losses, throw my kits in the garbage and move on with my life.
>>
>>15867013
Well you certainly fucked up. Just throw it out and start fresh

Don't worry Anon, I've got some Tamiya thinner for my paints and a respirator, I'll live.
On that note, what's the usual paint to thinner ratio for Tamiya? 2 Paint to 1 Thinner, right?
>>
>>15868584

A quick googling says 30-50% thinner. I'd say start at one of the two and then just adjust if you are having issues with it being too thin or thick.

It's pretty good for its age, nice details. My only gripe is that there's a seam line across the two halves of the chest. The flaps on the chest vents are a bit fiddly to get in too.

And this, children, is why you should always remember to pre-loosen ALL the joints on your RG frames.

It's my fuckup, I'll own it. It's never leaving Destroy Mode, so I might just glue the joint in place and live with it, but I am now the not-so-proud owner of a RG Unicorn with a gimpy right shoulder.

Haha, time for painting.
Manual unrelated.
>>
>>15869226
RGs are cooler and take less space. Besides, the Unicorn MG is objectively terrible.

>>15869232
Have you considered that sometimes, shit happens? I was rotating the joint. I certainly wasn't wrenching on it. The joint was stiff because I didn't work it back and forth while assembling the frame, and that started torquing the peg connected to the other end of the joint against a connection piece that couldn't handle that much lateral stress.

I want to buy a 6th form barbatos, should I get the 1/100 or the 1/144? It's hard to tell how much nicer the 1/100 is on dalong.
>>
>>15869557
It's a 1/100 rather than a MG, so it's not all that much more detailed than the HG. The real question you should ask is; Do I want a larger 1/100 scale Barbatos, or am I satisfied with a 1/144 (perhaps to display it with other HG IBO kits)
>>
>>15869557
The 1/100 Barbatos is proportioned weird, its body looks extra scrunched up, and the knee covers on the thighs make the thighs look longer than they are
