Actually, by RAW, SKL, SKL Wingcross and Wingle should all be seperate entries (They work as in L, right?). The intent was to up the use of different R-Series in OG games, because the whole point of the process is to encourage experimentation and wildly divergent playstyles. So things like 'You can't use base SKL or Wingle, only combine them once Wingcross is unlocked' is as designed.

Is that too much RNG? I still feel its in the spirit of the exercise, even if it can make things very awkward. I' ma big believer in making up for lost levels by upgrading robots when you finally get them.

When I was doing my half-completed J LP, I use Gadwin Printscreen to give myself a nice hotkey that would automatically send images to a prearranged folder. I don't know if its still the go-to best option, or if its compatible with DS emulators, but I'd reccomend trying it.

What do you guys think of the really early entries in the series? I tried the first but it seemed overly simple and I wasn't interested in an RPG with literally no story aside from an opening and ending cutscene.

Moved on to SRW2 and just hit stage 10, really enjoying it. Feels like it has a more innocent take on character interactions. Game is nice and hard too.

Has some strange things though, like how the Zeta in Waverider mode makes for great artillery, I don't remember Waverider ever being used like that in Zeta.

Not really keen on them, mostly because they're too simplified or too wonkysoft for me, and those were the Masoukishin years too and I'm one of those that don't like the Masoukishin cast, outside of some exceptions like Based Bian and Ryune.
For me SRW gets playable starting from @, everything before it I really, really need to force myself to care, call me a casual if you want, but I can't bear SRW older than @, if you wanna talk about other stuff like Hero Senki or Great Battle it's a whole other story though, but those were just recently conflated in the SRW brand, so I guess they don't really count, and even those are still a hit or miss for me.

Yeah, in early game you don't really have to start upgrading stuff, once you start to get more units and more choices you can do what you want. J isn't especially difficult, so you can upgrade anything and do good.

Can't say. It's only at level 60 and has two locked abilities at 65, so right now it's fairly stock "not limit broken attacker who I haven't bothered to do the ability missions for yet".
