The Pilder is an easy to hit fragile weakspot. It's a poor design choice. Plus it looks bad. 1901's armored head looks better suited to combat, and the pilot is in the chest so there's no need for a Pilder anyway.

No it's not. It's what makes Mazinger unique compared to Gundam or other mecha. Unlike those, Kouji rides Mazinger likes he ride a motorcycle, and it looks cooler that way.

Otherwise we'd never get to see Kouji riding it, and for animation purposes, that would look boring.

What about unfinished mazingers?

Dai mazinger sounds pretty interesting as it was basically going to be braves x mazinger. Some of the designs just had me go "what the fuck" in befuddlement, the best example being the Elephant Mazinger. Too bad Dai-mazinger was canned during its conceptual phase and we got the Getter Robo Go anime which didn't really bring that much to the table.

It doesn't just stop at that, you've also got the Mazinger reimagining be Obari that became dangaioh instead and Energer Z technically speaking.
