He was always a sneaky little cowardly shit back when he stole Sokalov's research, fifteen years of abuse and paranoia and at the hands of Skullface and Cipher's didn't help, as well as expecting Big Boss or Miller to come gunning for himm as revenge for his betrayal. The fact that Strangelove just used him as a sperm donor for her and the bosses' ideological son (which sort of makes Hal Solid Snake's half-brother. Kind of) didn't help either. Huey was always lying to himself to justify his own actions as necessary, always casting himself as the hero in his own mind, no matter how increasingly bloody his selfish choices got.

I never really felt "steal" was a fair way to describe his reuse of concepts from the Shagohod. Fact is that the design was sound and could be repurposed for the Peace Walker project. I don't recall anyone giving the Soviets shit when they literally cloned the Sidewinder to make their own heat seeking missile.

At any rate the guy was an engineer who just wanted to make giant robots. It's clear that he shared Granin's desire to make a gressorial weapon, and maybe if he weren't the pawn of a secret war between two really sour parties then maybe the worst that'd happen is... wait no the Strangelove shitstorm would've probably had him going off the deep end, so there's that.

Huey lived a hard life, one where neither he nor the people he corresponded with made it any better for him, except for Granin who was like the lone kindred spirit for him.
