What annoys me the most about nu-Star Wars haters is that they ignore any and all supplementary material to it that fleshes out the setting despite the fact that the original movies have the same lack of depth to the setting. The only reason people don't realise is that most of the supplementary material for the PT and OT have become common knowledge for fans.
There are two novels that give you more information on the FO and how they came about. Don't blame the franchise for the fact that you just cannot keep up and need spoonfeeding.

You can still see his influence, Poe's X-wing has design elements from McQuarrie's original X-wing design, and the new A-wing's in The Last Jedi borrow details from McQuarrie's original blue A-wings he designed for Return of the Jedi, the 2 red stripes on the wing, blue color scheme, the 2 laser cannons that are almost identical to McQuarries design.

I imagine they are starting to back off on using too much McQuarrie because the SW Rebels cartoon uses so much McQuarrie influence already

I remember reading on a game magazine that the guys that made FRACTURE ( Day One Studio) worked with Lucas and he literally forced them to change the main characters name so it was the same as his kid. He fucked their game and they hated him. I know another developer was making a star wars game for him and they asked him for input in names for the villains and he told them "darth insanious. darth icky " and people thought he was jocking or being a dick but he was actually being serious!!!! like the post said not out of malice just him being George Lucas. Then you read about how the original star wars was going to be with han solo a car sales man type of character or some shit like that and you have to thank all the EDITORS that toned down George Lucas and made star wars great!!!!!!
