Zero got pretty fucking huge by the end of the manga, but not Emperor levels. Probably because it doesn't need to get huge; Mazinger didn't have themes of evolution or growth like Getter, so a progression into a massive form is not something you'd expect. Instead, it becomes a singularity of destruction, the manifestation of a god/demon that either saves or destroys everything.

Zero vs Emperor would be the collision of two unstoppable forces.

It should be obvious, but start with the beginning with the Mazinger Z anime. Follow it up with Great Mazinger (although it only has subs to a certain 20-ish episode), and finally Grendizer.

Mazinger Z is one of the most successful 70s anime, even more than Gundam 79, so there's no reason not to start there.

Do the same with Nagai's manga trilogy. His assistant, Gosaku Ota also has a Mazinger trilogy of his own but that one only has Grendizer scanlated in English.

And you're pretty much done with Mazinger and you can move on with your life. Everything else is either a spinoff, a reboot or a parody, and they're all optional.

People will tell you to start with Shin Mazinger or Mazinkaiser, but these series are optional and not required.

Omega has some great animated episodes, although the quality is very inconsistent like usual for Toei tv, unlike Soul of Gold, but tons of stuff that it did basically just annoyed fans for no gain, like the initial spandex cloths (and later giving most clothes big crystals) or the Saint school concept. They also could never balance the new cast well, and pretty much just gave up on developing them in the last arc of the 2nd season, even though they were still the ones getting the big power ups, which made the narrative rather odd.

They also messed up game-wise, unlike Super that gets its characters added to DBZ games, they kept Omega completely separate from classic series stuff, which meant they made an early Omega game way before there were enough characters for that.

Some episodes are truly nice to watch thanks to a different and sentimental story, especially those with good drawning (the minority of them).
That's what we are truly talking about. Toeizinger was explicity made for selling toys to children and it worked very well. Good episodes where an exception; the most is repetive and badly directed as hell because the show was focused only on key moments. Today you don't call something like that "solid show". Be honest.
And that's why it's unbeleivable when someone say Toeizinger z is better than Shin Mazinger.
So yes, Toeizinger lives on nostalgia, the kind of "how awesome was that robot". But first watch this old series and if you survive 92 episodes then comes back with actual knowledge. Memories are different than reality.
It also lives on fags that believe "the original is the one and only", but for sure most of them haven't watched it and never will.

From a story perspective, people would get tired of the back to back bad ends. Like, the most hopeful timeline is really just a countdown until the Mikene come to fuck everything up and shit has to be redone again.

Mazinger does seem to stay closer to Go Nagai's manga compared to some of those other anime though. The trailer episode wasn't just action upon action though.

I actually watched episode 1 when it came out, and my take away was that Shin Mazinger was going to take very a different route from the original, with scenes of action and drama interspersed throughout. I'm not sure how people interpreted Shin as a show that will be fast paced based on what they saw in the first episode, which was nothing more than a random collection of clips showing the depth of the story.
