I do think its funn y that almost every named zeon character in Thunderbolt has a tragic backstory that drive them. Io's home was destroyed and his dad killed himself but it never seems to bother him. He's happy as a clam as long as gets jazz and a gundam. Not to mention how he always gets a new girlfriend every story arc.

Io Fleming is a subversion of the "Good Guy Gundam" trope. He's a fucking killer and he loves it. That's why I love him. Daryl is a good guy fighting in a bad cause, while Io is a bad guy fighting for a good cause. Thunderbolt further displays the Moore Brotherhood as a group of bitter career people who want to get ahead of each other. While the Zeeks are the Living Dead Division, literal war cripples still fighting for their home.

Thunderbolt is generally just putting a mirror infront of Gundams face, Season 2 shows this good aswell with the Feddies interloping on SSA territory and deep striking them to prevent them from getting a weapon finished.

It also represents the Zeeks as the Aryan Ubermenschs they truly are

The purpose of the gassings wasn't to provide an empty colony for the drop (That was just a bonus). It was to wipe out the Sides neighboring Side 3 so the EFF wouldn't have a convenient and easy place to launch attacks from and resupply.

There have always been more sources claiming the majority of the sides were simply wiped out by conventional means and nuclear weapons than they've been even mentioning the use of gas, and the ones that do (mostly Entertainment Bible 39, which is an old, outdated book that western sources used as a primary source of information in the early days of the english Gundamofficial site) are either outdated and contradicted by anime since their publishing or they're so old that they claim Zeon dropped more than one colony (which we all know is bullshit.) What is more, those sources specifically claim the use of NBC weapons, and the only biological weapon that cropped up during the OYW was Astaroth, which never ended up being used.

The animation, which is the only source that actually counts for anything, only ever showed one colony being gassed, and established lore from side materials related to those very series make it's pretty clear why.

Io's excuse is that his own allies, the Moore Brotherhood, look at him first like scapegoat meant to die, then like a hero when he actually proves himself to be competent.

Not to mention what's left of his family sees him as a disposable human being and actively hopes he dies so that she'll inherit his stock in the family company.

The thing about Io and Daryl is that both of their worst attributes (and Daryl has plenty, you just haven't seen them yet) are born of genuine pain, the kind that one doesn't just heal from. It haunts them in ways that stick with them, and it drives their actions in ways that someone not in their shoes wouldn't really understand. In the case of Io, Zeon took everything of value from him, and their unprovoked actions led to the loss of both his family and his colony, so he's turned killing them into a twisted personal "sport" of sorts. His crazed battle style isn't his default persona, but more of a coping mechanism for the horror Zeon brought upon him, and for those of you that haven't read the manga, he's soon to find out that even those he actually does hold close aren't to be trusted either.

In my opinion it's more striking that Daryl basically just keeps fighting because he knows that if he ever quit the military, he'd just be an invalid veteran, and the Mobile Suits give him purpose. That's why I like their chemistry, they are complete opposites, but are both still fighting because it's the only thing to keep their mind off their miserably fucked up life.

Seeing as the other high-spec Gundams were doing pretty good themselves, there's no reason to preserve the RX-78-2's reputation as a one-of-a-kind. The sight of any Gundam at all is enough to make Zeeks shit their pants, as Thunderbolt showed.

G04 blows itself up after little time on the battlefield. Mudrock gets rekt by Midnight Fenrir every time they fight. At least one Full-Armor Gundam gets destroyed by some shitty Zaku if you take Hasegawa seriously. Thunderbolt gets destroyed (though they're not clear about how the show fits into the tv shows) after like a week on the battlefield. Alex gets destroyed by some kid in a Zaku II. They were barely even in the field and certainly weren't doing the kind of work Amuro or the backbone of the navy did. In fact they barely did anything, which is why they pop up as obscure MS that were forgotten by history, which is the rationale for pushing them into the OYW when the RX-78-2 was active for like 4 months

To Zeon the RX-78-2 and the White Base single handedly tore through NA and Asia and killed Garma, Ral, and the Tri-Stars and proceeded to shit all over everyone that so much as looked at them strange in space. That fat guy, M'quave, the Flannigan institution. They're not even low-profile grunts, I imagine the Zeon leadership must have been at least mildly shaken up when the White Base showed up and started pushing in literally everyone's shit left.

And then you have the rest... I guess G04 destroyed a small fleet before exploding. But Mudrock and Alex didn't even do anything besides get their shit pushed in. Thunderbolt FA uh, killed a few Zaku snipers, decent work but compared to the Gundam it wasn't much. Alex at least had the benefit of being ready so late no news could get out of its destruction. Zeon was seriously willing to NUKE an entire colony like their genocidal days because of a single MS that may or may not have been ready. It goes to show how big of an impact the RX-78-2 alone had (at least that's the rationale of 0080), they were terrified of it.

And to put it into perspective, the federation was already fielding high-end GMs like the GM Sniper II that shit on the RX-78-2, and Zeon apparently didn't react at all. But try to make one more fucking Gundam and here come the nukes and secret hit-teams with one of a kind MS armed to the teeth. 0080 doesn't make any sense unless Zeon was terrified of Amuro and the Gundam. It's not even rational given how late into the war it was (and how small the Gundam is relative to the entire EFSF navy) but it goes to show the impact the RX-78-2 had as an iconic figure in the war.

Daryl is actually a far bigger sociopath, but unlike Io, he hides the thrills he gets from battle from everyone and pretends to himself that he's still a normal person, when in truth, losing his limbs and piloting the psycho zaku whittled away at any mental health and put him in a position where he's just as addicted to war as Io is, only far more willing to commit terrible acts to get back to what he had. He's gone off the deep end entirely, whereas Io maintain some level of normalcy, in spite of how he acts on the battlefield. That won't last long...

If you go by the old MSV lore and the Master Archive's modernized interpretation of it, there were actually 8 RX-78-1 Gundams from the beginning, and those were later refitted into the Gundams we know show up later (though three of them became RX-78-2s, two of those were destroyed and sort of frankensteined into what would eventually become the RX-78-3.) With the exception of the Alex, It wasn't a case of the Federation looking at Amuro and saying "BUILD MORE OF THOSE!" so much as it was those Prototype Gundams already existing and the Federation refitting those RX-78-1s into the RX-78-2/3/4/5/6/ and eventually 7(post-war) in order to find new methods of combating Zeon's forces by giving those Gundams specialized roles on the field. As it turns out, the original RX-78-2 was the most cost-effective and it sufficed in most situations, so they never really broke the mold.

As it was said before, Daryl is more of a asshole than Io is, only better at seeming like a good person. Io's a thrill-seeker that uses his own hotblood as a coping mechanism for the horrors of war, but he has a way back to normal life and at his core, he's still got some humanity left. Daryl does not; once the war is over, his real nightmare starts, and he knows it. He's not going to fight for a side that he knows is going to lose, so he'd rather join a bunch crazy monks if it means he gets to fight the Federation in the one thing that made him feel whole again. Io is entranced by the Gundam, but Daryl is controlled by his machine.

Io's boast about him being fucked up by the war wasn't idle chirping from a butthurt loser; he fought Daryl, so he knows things about him that nobody close to Daryl ever will.

Most of Daryl's cripple friends and crew come along with him. The whole Living Dead Division has pretty much defected except Billy because he's not a cripple and has nothing to gain from the Reuse P device. Io is a typical pilot. Even in real life fighter pilots absolutely love their machines and the feeling it gives them just to be in the sky using their machine. He's also aware of the reality that to get what he wants he has to run those dangerous missions, and because he's a soldier that means those missions will involve killing the enemy. Yet he has the ability to interact with others outside of that narrow field of mobile suit piloting.

Even after the war he'd be fine simply because he may still have the capacity to pilot suits in one way or another.

Daryl has attached an ideological affirmation to his own piloting and created a philosophical justification for killing the enemy. In that sense he's made it part of his psyche without a logical rationale.

To be honest I wouldn't be shocked if some of the Zeon survivors end up part of the Spartans in the next arc to help the Feddies fight the SAA due to Daryl's betrayal.
