I think they originally designed the robot without any connection to Spider-Man, but didn't know what to do with it, and when they announced that show they said "what the hell, let's give Spidey a mecha."

If i remember right, Toei couldn't think of a particularly spider-themed finishing move for spiderman, so they just gave him Leopardon.
