It was an original (sort of) IP in a film industry that plays it safe with constant remakes and reboots.
The fact that the studio executives DIDN'T stick the title of some totally unrelated 80s anime on it for name recognition is remarkable.

It was decently entertaining, not quite as good as del toro's other films.

They built a robot with a giant wrecking ball for a hand but didn't give it any shoulders.

Watched it twice in IMAX and no regrets

We got a modern, western, live-action Kaiju vs Mecha film finally. Unfortunately it was pretty cookie-cutter. I still enjoyed it.

Del Toro could do better, he rightly played it safe, PR did well enough and the hype surrounding the new movie is unreal. Mechs will take off after this and you'll see your Tomino's soon enough.
