***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.

For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

== THICK MS GROUPBUILD ==

Build a kit of your choice that's heavily armored, and thick in the thighs/arms/torso/general area. Examples include:
>Dom + Dom Variants
>The O
>Virtue/Seravee Gundams
>Gusion/Man Rodis
>Full Armor gundams (If they're heavily armored, and not guns strapped everywhere like the FA Unicorn)

Non-Bandai kits are allowed, so feel free to whip out a Frame Arms kit or something and work with that as long as you make it thicc as fuck.

Start Date: 6/15
End Date: 8/31

the 0.5mm styrene sheet was pretty thin to begin with, so it was easy to bend it into shape. the 0.75mm however was a bit tougher. probably bad advice, but use the very tip of the lighter flame to soften the plastic to bend it into shape. do NOT heat it too long or too close to the flame, it will burn and ruin the piece

I tried brush painting it and failed. Also I didn't wait long enough for the paint to dry before applying tape to do the gold lines and when I lifted the tape it ripped huge swathes of paint off with it because I didn't wait long enough to dry again and ruined everything. If I change the battery the eye glows real good though.

Because there are two Char Zaku Is. http://bandai-hobby.net/item/1712/ http://bandai-hobby.net/item/1776/

One of them shows up at the Battle of Mare Smythii, the other one probably has a tiny bit of screentime somewhere in the Origin OVAs. Don't think too hard about it, just know that Char sells, Zakus sell, and Bandai wants their money's worth from the Origin Zaku frame..

That's what it looks like when you put painted pieces in (I assume) alcohol, the paint starts lifting on its own after a while.

Personally I just grab a toothbrush after leaving it submerged for an hour or so since so far I have only needed to strip a few pieces.

This kit was one of the first I built, a gift from some family and I didn't know what the fuck I was doing nor was I really into kits at the time anyways. This kit survived several moves though as you can see its missing parts. It just sags now, it doesn't have the strength to lift it's own guns or even stand up straight anymore. But it's too solid a kit to topple over so it just stoops, it's will is broken.

1/100 F2000 Super Zaku resin conversion by Concentration Camp, using the 2.0 MG zaku frame
The kit itself was an absolute pleasure to work on, no bubbles in the resin and minimal mold slip.
Painted in mr color and gaia lacquer paints.
Replaced the verniers with some aftermarket ones I already had in the stash, along with some resin and photoetch vernier cores.
Metal spikes that came with the kit replaced with Bandai HD builders parts too.

I don't know who does either. I just want to know why someone would prefer one or the other.

>>15818501
So it's just that people prefer building the gunpla rather than preferring the gunpla as a final product of the RD as a final product?
>>
>>15818509
It's a case by case basis, so ask your friend why
>>
>>15818478
>>15818486
Sorry, meant to say "You sound like you would* enjoy RD figures more".

You get the RD if you don't enjoy building stuff and just want a cool figure to mess around with. With model kits the enjoyment comes from building and working on it.
>>
>>15818509
>So it's just that people prefer building the gunpla rather than preferring the gunpla as a final product of the RD as a final product?
It's a hobby. Some people train spot. Some people bird watch. Some people sew. Some people get super in to serial killers and freak out everyone they know.

We here build and customize our action figures/statue figures.

RD are expensive collector's figures with no scale to them, they're made to go on the shelf alongside basically any other figure and the barrier to entry is money.
Gunpla are relatively inexpensive model kits that come in scaled sizes. They're designed to be easy to put together and displayed among each other similar to figures, but can be placed just as well in scaled diorama and display pieces and the barrier to entry is the ability to put them together.

People argue that RD are for people who want toys, but at that cost I feel they're more for collectors who don't want to have to build their display.
>>
>>15818581
Even the ANIME line is. Hell, even the higher end ones like Signature Ka don't have seam welding, though they do have some paint and decals at least.

If you want a high quality finish you have to do it yourself.

Work.

How much of it you need depends on the kit.

Its an articulation thing, a chest flex. The hg build burning has it too.
>>

I personally don't complain about the Zaku surplus, it funds all the other things that I enjoy. I just wish that Bandai would be more willing to take a hit sometimes. There's a lot of designs that don't have an HG/Revive/RG yet and I know they could find a way to leverage the possible shortcomings, but they just won't.

Questions about weathering: has anyone used Mr. Weathering color? I want to try it on a build. If I understand correctly, I just brush it on, let it sit, then wipe it off.

Second, when should I do That? I've snapped and painted my kit, and I intend to topcoat after the paint has cured a while. Should I do decals, lining, then topcoat again before applying weathering color? Because I've seen some people forego lining and apply decals afterwards with weathering color also.

And should I dry brush before or after the weathering color?

Yes. I know a store that buys them, but they give you like 5 bux per kit. Strange because I've never seen them re-selling gunpla anywhere on their store. I think in Japan it's a lot more prevalent.

I'd personally wouldn't mind buying snapfitted kits for kitbash fodder. If anyone's selling a built, un-painted/coated Semi Striker, I'll buy it.

long post, but need some questions to be answered
i had these sanding sticks with me for a very long time and wanted to clean them. i assumed i just needed to dunk them in water to clean it, but 2 of the 4 seemed to be "melting", the grit being washed away while the other 2 are completely fine(the orange and blue in the pic related are the ones melting). was this a terrible thing to do and something to avoid or was there just something wrong with those 2 in particular
since i dont know the grit to these sanding sticks, wanted to get some sand paper/ sanding sticks from 500-1000ish grit. i can only eyeball the ones i have. should i bite the bullet and buy some tamiya/mr hobby sandpaper or are these fine alternatives
https://www.amazon.ca/Squadron-Products-SQ30506-Value-Sanding/dp/B000CDR5K8/ref=sr_1_cc_2?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1503897015&sr=1-2-catcorr&keywords=sanding+sticks
or are there other brands you recommend

And to top it off I can't find an action base that fits the damn thing. It just sits in my closet, a monument to my failure.

So I'm building my first gunpla and I'm trying to panel line it. I'm lining with relative ease in the designated crevice areas but in the areas that you would panel line where one side is raised I find the the default fine tip line is way to think but whenever I try to thin out the line it's way to uneven.
Is there some method to this or do I just have to git gud?

Yes, the rectangular peg on either side is super loose. I put a little bit of freezer tape (it's very soft and textured, so it grips the peg hole) on the side of the peg to keep it in place until I decide whether to pad it out with superglue or just straight cement it on permanently.

Fair enough.
There's nothing wrong with the kit itself, and I sorta envy the people who do enjoy them. It's pretty much just a matter of preference in size, i suppose, which sucks because a lot of kits will never 1/100s. Who knows, maybe it'll grow on me, but my inner autism probably won't let me because of how much I've already invested in 1/100s/MGs.

I guess simply put, it's not a case of "I don't like it" they're just too small... although the kit is already starting to grow on me (for reference I'm 6'1" so a lot of things are small for me)
>>
>>15821638
Everything is the same level of "easiness"'to build if it's a recent Bandai Gunpla model. If you are someone who customizes and paints then it can be a nice break to deal with a simpler model every now and then.
>>
>>15821645
READ THE GUIDE

Here is an easy flow chart: Cut/remove nubs from pieces -> seam welding to remove ugly seam lines that ruin a cool paint job -> primer ->paint ->gloss coating -> panel wash (needs gloss coat to go on smooth) -> final top coat.

Customizing can be done after snapping or seam welding.
>>
>>15821651
That's the most common reason for preferring MG to HG, nothing out of the ordinary. It's true that the MG scale and above have a lot of shelf presence, although sometimes mixing scales on the shelf isn't too bad and can even make for cool dioramas.
>>
>>15821654
I said nothing about customizing and painting, I said building.

And when I say "building", that includes nub removal, panel lining, decals, and topcoat, and by that standard, HGs personally are still too easy to build.
>>
>>15817902

Do you already know some basic guidelines about thinning your brand of paint? You're using modeling paint and not art paint, right? Get a respirator for the fumes. Test on spoons before models. Prime your pieces. These simple tips may seem obvious but they'll save your paint job and your lungs, don't pass them off as useless. Average PSI for airbrushing paint is around 10-20 by brand and thinness.

Not a problem anon, whatever's necessary for safety.

What are you going to be working on?
>>
>>15821870
I bought an airbrush for the last groupbuild, and after having problems spraying acrylics, I haven't touched it again until last week. All of the videos make it look so damn smooth with excellent coverage, but I wasn't getting that no matter how much I thinned it. It was such a bummer.

I'm going to buy a bit of Tamiya and Mr. Color to test it out when I have the spare hobby money.

Do you have any suggestions on what respirator to buy?
>>
>>15821880
I have a half face 6000 series respirator, but a full face one will work also. You should be buying the P100 filters, not any lower number because they don't protect against model fumes. I always get number 60921, they're pink.

What acrylic paints were you using? If it was art acrylics that would explain your problem, they aren't meant for airbrush. You need real modeling acrylics. Tamiya, Vallejo and others will work fine, buy their appropriate thinner and check online for paint to thinner ratio.
>>
>>15821777
enjoy throat cancer
>>
>>15821870
>What are you going to be working on?
I forgot to answer the question.

I'm actually not sure. I'm only finishing up my 4th model so the options are overwhelming. I'm thinking maybe a Flag.

>>15821888
I was using Vallejo at 18ish psi. Model Air when ordering off a website, standard Model when I wasn't ordering batches. I think my main problem was not mixing the paint and thinner enough.

Also I was having issues spraying their varnishes and I don't think I applied enough on my last build. That's why I became disinterested.
>>
>>15821777
>local man found dead painting robot toys
>>
>>15821900
Well instead of pushing through blind look up specific number ratios online and view YouTube videos, they're invaluable because you can see that someone made it work and copy their steps as close as you can. That's how I learned to disassemble my airbrush originally.

And don't mix paint in the airbrush, get little glass jars, eye droppers to measure precisely, drop the paint into the jar with thinner to mix then transfer to airbrush. You can even store paint mixes this way, if making custom colors. There should be videos to thin Vallejo, don't believe their "out of bottle" tag because every paint needs some thinning.

Flag can be interesting, watch out for not having polycaps. If joints aren't tight enough you tighten them with super glue or Future floor polish.
>>
>>15819600
No kit in the mail yet. I'll probably follow the guide and get the OG Gundam for my first. I'm enjoying the general, though. Feel like I'm learning a little before I give it a go myself.
>>
>>15821910
>And don't mix paint in the airbrush, get little glass jars, eye droppers to measure precisely, drop the paint into the jar with thinner to mix then transfer to airbrush.
I definitely need to try this. I was worried about wasting paint, though.

>watch out for not having polycaps
Oh, that's kind of weird.
>>
>>15821929
At the end of the day in terms of the wasted paint it's very tiny amounts because most of it ends up in the cup. Worth the ability to be precise with your thinning, and less frantic because your hands aren't shaking your brush around. You can sit comfortably, mix the paint, and then transfer.

Also, keep your phone or a notepad handy to jot down whatever worked if you don't think you'll remember. Saves time for future reference to just look it up and say X paint to thinner, every paint is a little different.
>>
>>15820958
Go over it with a white eraser

When spraying acrylics i usually use a dust mask for long sessions and no mask for short ones. Both though using my spraybooth. No more colored boogers or scratchy throat from when i tried spraying outdoors with no mask. When using enamel/lacquer thinners i use a respirator similar to the one in guide with vapor filters.

I store my mask in those plastic containers with the rubber lining for sealing. Do i need to ziplock it too or is that overkill?
