Anon please, featherfag looks absolutely atrocious. That literally is the only design blunder they pulled. Schwarzer, Vermillion and all the other grunts look exceptional. The character design is exceptions. The dolem aesthetics have got to be some of the most consistently impressive I've ever seen in the medium. And then they slap this thing in front of your face. I should be able to sue the illustrator/novel author for that, or whoever designed this thing.

It's a matter of practicality. Always ask yourself what purpose does whatever you're slapping on your design serve. This doesn't just mean in terms of utilitarianism either, even a design element that's purely aesthetic needs some logic behind it. A commander unit having a taller head fin for example, a super robot having a tiger for a chest to give a heroic image.

Anyone else slightly put off by the Zaku and Z'Gok being traced over original lineart but then certain armor pieces and weapons are "new" and have "those angles"?

I mean, I like the designs, it's just a bit odd since it's got 1979 proportions and then 2017 details.

I would not say Try had bad original designs but my big problem with Try is that they are not based on any previous Gundams. Like Sure they say the Lightning is based on Re-Gz but it's sure a departure one of the reason Build Fighters was so cool is that it re-contextualized a bunch of classic mobile suits. But it's seems that all the good designs went to people who are not main characters, like Ez-8's SR(It's like the writing team did not recognize the Dragonar references), to the out there Try-on 3 which is more interesting Gundam than Yuma's Lighting who pretty much just just got a Re-Gz that can transform. The Winning Gundam brings back a solid gimmick though so I give it points for that. Burning Gundam did not get good till the Final Form, where at least now it's looks more like a modified God Gundam.

I think its association with the shitty antagonists, as well as having to share a line up with those bland 00 customs and just TRY in general is what makes people give it a hard time.
