Depends. Sometimes it's just how obvious an animator's quirks/drawing style is. Other times they're confirmed by another person who was part of the staff or through an artbook/other source.

I really like the coloring at 0:11 with the slight gradient in the night, and the shading on the ships showcasing the darkness too

If each ANT movie had been 30 minutes longer and they didn't change the ending it maybe could've worked.
Also they should've pulled a Paul Thomas Anderson and just made it 4:3, making it widescreen just brutalized the old footage even more.
