Alot of the problems in this OVA stem from the fact that BF lacks a season before this OVA. It felt really lacking because we're not as invested because Sei had no extra 26 episodes of development without Reiji and the other characters having developments as well.

Like some others have motioned, If this was the finale to S2 of Build Fighters, it would work.

The Star Burning Gundam is the precursor to the Build Burning Gundam. Remember Sei built the Star Burning based off how he *thought* Reiji would use it. Build Burning is the result of Reiji test fighting Star Burning.

When Reiji showed up you can tell the tone shifts and how Sei was filled with pure joy. It wasn't nostalgia, GBF wasn't that old, the hype music during climax worked a bit but nothing ground breaking, some throwback to the end of GBF, pretty good, no tricks or gimmicks, It was just plain ol' fun like it used to be.

Reiji adapted to the tools he was given in gunplas mostly, but Sei knew the guy was crazy good in straight up close-combat in RL and he used that in gunpla fights too.

So essentially, Sei just wanted a gunpla that fully adapts around Reiji's familiarity with close-combat instead of how Reiji had to adapt to MS loadouts. Sei just went on to chase the idea of a fully close-combat RG system gunpla as builder, with Reiji as the ideal pilot and more. Once he thinks he did all he could with that he left it behind and moved on with all the knowledge gained.

In the end, they kind of slightly mirrored the other in gunpla battle. Reiji adapted to using the Gundam loadouts Sei makes and Sei adapted to the use and creation of the tools developed for/by Reiji like the Build Knuckle.

Why live?

I liked it. Loved the mecha designs, and that final battle between Reiji and Sei was a delight. Infinitely better than anything in Try.

Only thing I didn't much care for was Mao vs. Boobs. Even setting aside the absurdity of it, another chick in an SD Gundam. Fuck that.
"MISAKI IS LIFE" was kinda worth it though. Goddamn.

I think I mostly liked it? It had a lot of the things that made the first season enjoyable, a mix of the absurd (Gunpla Cops and Gunpla Mafia) and it was good seeing the OG cast back

But I guess some things didn't sit that well with me? It clearly doesn't fit continuity wise and contradicts both the original series ending and Try but they decided to just not care about it. That didn't really sit well with me.

Also I could never be convinced a band of Gunpla Mafia fuckboys could pose any threat to a bunch of the best in the world, even if it was an actual twist that their ringleader was literally a fuckboy.
