I wasn't aware that courage only counted if you died. I also don't see that Axis' imminent fall was widely known, there's very little in the film to suggest it and when people are shown reacting in the epilogue most of them are in rather peaceful surroundings and situations. It sucks on a personal level that he's not remembered, but on a thematic level I think it's quite consistent with Tomino's social views that a miracle not only not be remembered but not even recognised by the vast majority. I also think it makes Amuro's actions more poignant. He did it because he believed in people, not for recognition; the audience are supposed to remember him, not the setting.

Surely the hero of OYW who put his life to save motherfucking Earth got at least some sort of statue or at least mentioned in Unicorn who is 3 years after CCA but we only got an awkward photo of Amuro. At least Bright still remember him
