No, it couldn't. This is what happens to the Big Zam as it's approaching the battlefield in Solomon. If it hadn't had the i-field it'd have been fucked. And the only mass produced variant we know of not only has no i-field, it doesn't even have the multitude of smaller beam weapons surrounding it's body the prototype had that did almost all the damage.

The problem is that it's unsupported. As a first line area defense machine it's fine. It wrecks for 15 minutes and then retreats while being covered by a second line of standard MS. The problem isn't the Big Zam, it's how they ended up using it. It is NOT a last line of defense. It's the front line and then if the fight somehow lasts long enough it can support once it cools down.

But you can't trust a Zabi to not fuck it up.

It was supported. When it launches there's 5 or 6 Zaku IIs and Doms or something with it, which is probably all that was available at the time. It's unlikely to ever have more though, since assigning 20 units as protection to a single mobile armor is fairly ridiculous. Especially for Zeon, who never had the kind of numbers you'd need for that. The units protecting it were fairly quickly and easily dispatched though.

The FA ZZ Gundam's beam coating could take sustained beam barrages for up to 3 minutes according to Astonaige IIRC. It was basically a pseudo I-field, nothing at all like the Hyaku Shiki's mirror coating

See, that's not quite what I meant. The Big Zam shines in fights where A) It's unexpected and B) the rest of the area defense would fall just short of being able to hold on its own.

Imagine this: a few Salamis cruisers roll up, drop off some gms and balls, and instead of zakus, oh hey big zam. The Zam defends for 15 minutes and suddenly oh hey there's the zakus. The Zam retreats, the zakus mop up. If the fight somehow lasts long enough, the Zam can go back out, but it should always be first and solo until the i fields are ready to drop. Of course, this could all be avoided by not making a big zam and instead, I dunno, maybe more zakus. Can't go wrong with zakus. They don't melt themselves after 20 minutes.
