So guys what are your opinion on occidental mechas?
>>
Almost all of the Jaegers were too good for the plebs. Pacific Rim deserved to sell better. And most maddening of all, the DVD release has fucked up audio. Nothing like the theater.
>>
>>15797792
This is what bugs me the most, the bluray fixed some of the audio problems but for the most I'm guessing we'll never gonna have the original audio release
>>
The word "mech" is awful to me. I was not and am not a big fan of Pacific Rim's robots.

When I want good American robots specifically it typically turns into less "find American robots I like" as much as finding anything to do with them at all and then having to go over the same (very few) examples over again.
>>
Western mech designs usually do nothing for me, but Gipsy Danger is unquestionably one of my favorite giant robots ever.

>>
>>15797785
Please stop this meme. Certain design influences are not limited by location. It may have meant something in the pre-internet era, but doesn't matter in the current globalized climate.
>>
didnt the director say in the director commentary on the bliray that the jaegers designs were inspired mby mecha anime?
>>
>>15798259
He's a Mexican and did say that all of this was to satisfy his childhood boner for Mazinger and the like.
He, thankfully, had a strict policy to not make direct references to anything in the designs. So aside from the Mazinger chest on Gypsy Alpha, everything is original and frankly, great.

>>15797785
I separate giant robots into two categories only. Bad ones and good ones. Couldn't give less of a fuck if they were designed by a Leaf, Burger, Chinese, Korean concept artist, studied Japanese engineer or a guy from Italy.

False dichotomy.

For every single aspect or example you can think of that """"""""defines"""""""" "eastern" or "western" mecha you will find a plethora of mecha that have those features originating from both hemispheres.

>>15798259
They obviously are, but Del Taco has a much bigger boner for kaiju than he does mechs.

He's asking about "Amerimechs".

Imperial Knights are British designs even if you consider the fact they are basically just stolen from Warmachine which is made by Americans.

It's kinda weird there's no greater output of mecha from the Spaniards.
They love the crap out of giant robots on both sides of the pond.

Well, we are sandwitched culturally between the Japs and Anglos, so we mix them freely with some French BD influences.

Ah, I forgot about Infinity.

Still, Italians have made their own mahou shoujo shows and French have made at least a few shounens. Germans have been pumping out manga, Koreans downright ripped off Japanese to make their own show.

I guess Del Torro is pulling your weight there, amigos.

Anyway, Spain doens't have enough cultural power/industry to make much Mechs stuff (it's a very minoritary market after all), a part of a few series than I can remember, the majority of stuff mech wise are minis or some comics.
>>
>>15799401
Do you happen to have a super-minimalist version of the Turn A? It's, like, all white, and there's a little blurb on the side from the designer about it having different equipment packs? I had it but lost it somehow and really want it again, Turn A variants are so fascinating.

Remind me again, what did Western mecha designers come up with first? Variable Fighters were Japanese. Kaiju busters were Japanese (Or at least I'm pretty sure they were Japanese). I just want a genuine list, I'm not going to just put up tunnel vision if someone offers a good response. Even two or three entries would do, because I know there's something out there I don't know about.

I'm the last person on earth to defend Games Workshop, but those are upscaled modernisations of designs that existed in Epic (6mm massive battle system) as far back as 1994.

You mean the Warjacks designed by ex-GW employee Mike McVey?

You're seriously reaching here. There's like a billion things you could quite accurately accuse GW of ripping off from somewhere else, but this isn't one of them. If anything the Knights are more like a Battletech ripoff with a thin veneer of gothic filigree.
