Mirage and Hayate were never supposed to be aces. They should've made them flawed pilots that need to work in tandem, each one covering the weaknesses of the other. That would give Mirage something to do and improve upon, and turn the triangle into something different, with the two girls being important to him but having different roles.

You retarded? There is nothing good about Hayate. Killing Messer and replacing him with Hayate was a mistake. Mirage being Max 2.0 would atleast allow her to do something of value. The Walküre are one of the worst thing about the show. Windermere are shit. Plot armor majority of the series.

I think I'd prefer if she was written to not become a great pilot but to be a great commander personally, with Arad dying instead of Messer and her dropping in to his place somehow, realizing she both likes and excels at that rather than flying, which she was trying to force because of expectations based on family name. I have no problem with her being (or after becoming more comfortable by realizing another area she loves) a good pilot who deserves her spot on the team, and even think it'd make for characterization to have her still pilot because she loves it based on time spent with her grandparents like in that one short flashback; just not excel at it and instead become notable in another area she was ignoring.

I think the other leg of the triangle should be the plane's mechanic, so that all 3 have an intimate relationship. The pilot being a singer of some kind who can over ride the AI and only has basic pilot training/skills as well as basic programming skills just in case there's a problem while the AI is the actual pilot and the mechanic/programmer as the one who wrote/oversees the AI would work I think, with a two girl/one guy triangle just to make it that little bit more distinct from Plus given the AI connection. You could even have the AI capable of inhabiting multiple bodies, with the mechanic eventually building a human shell for it that she can interact with everyone in more common situations a la Rommy in Andromeda.
