Excerpts of note:

>“I don't really like the art style of most anime these days, the ones that appeal to otaku tastes. So that means I don't watch much modern anime. However, I try to watch things like Your Name and In This Corner of the World. That said, I really love the new Gundam: The Origin anime series. Years ago I spoke with Yoshikazu Yasuhiko about why he didn't do anime anymore, as I told him I love to watch his works. Back then he said "No, it's too tough, I am retired!". Yet, he's now working on The Origin and he seems to be incredibly busy. I really love Yasuhiko's anime and I think my favorite work of his is probably Arion. I tend to really enjoy Yasuhiko's anime after Mobile Suit Gundam, so Venus Wars is another great one, Giant Gorg too. Anything of his from that era is great. The truth is I used to visit Yasuhiko's studio very often and he's my senpai.”

>“As for my favorite mecha designers, I really like the designs of an American guy I can't remember right now (laughs). I also really like the mecha design work of Takashi Watabe and Makoto Kobayashi. Apart from all that I really like the mecha in Neon Genesis Evangelion.”

>“As for the recent anime adaptation of Farewell to Weapons I like that a lot. The reason why Hajime Katoki ended up directing it was that he absolutely loved the original manga. So when we were talking about the manga together, I told him I wasn't personally interested in making a movie out of it and I said he should do it instead. Because Katoki really loves the original story, I really trusted him to adapt it properly into an anime. That he wouldn't spoil or ruin it. Obviously, the original manga is quite old now so Katoki had to update the mecha designs to make them more modern to appeal to a current audience. He also made some changes to the story but he didn't spoil it and I love what he did with it. It was also Katoki's first ever anime as a director and I think he did a great job."

>“Gundam is Gundam and the story is old. Admittedly, they are trying to update it and modernize it but I think that if you are going to change the designs drastically with each iteration, maybe you should change the story as well. In that sense, I don't feel the need to make a Gundam series of my own. Gundam should be Gundam and I am not very interested in doing that.”

>“While I haven't seen the new live-action Ghost in the Shell, when it comes to Akira I have already finished the original manga and my own anime version too. So in that sense, I am basically done with Akira. If someone wants to do something new with Akira then I am mostly okay with that. As I accepted the offer for a live-action Akira to be made, so I am generally okay with whatever they want to do with it. However, I did give one major condition to a live-action version and that is that I had to check and approve the scenario. As always, the fundamental question on adapting anything is whether you follow the host work strictly or do something new with it, that is a never-ending discussion I think. This is especially true for film-based adaptations from novels, as the reader has to use their own imagination to bring it to life. Readers inherently have their own interpretation. That often means a movie's production has more creative freedom. That said, with things like manga it means the story already comes with very specific visuals. That makes it much harder for a film's production to go their own way with it. Personally, I think being entirely bound to the original manga of something like Akira would not make any sense as a movie. As for what I would do in terms of adapting Akira into my own live-action movie, I really don't want to do that. I would much rather do something entirely new and separate.”

Bumping this one for you OP so the nu-/m/ale children see this and hopefully edcate themselves a little bit on actual /m/ stuff

As long as they give him tons of cash I'm sure he'll let them fuck with it as much as they please, like GitS.
>>
>>15786549
Also, he hates moe just like Miyazaki does

An Akira adaptation is destined to be a disaster because not even the anime film fully does the manga justice. He has the right idea of basically saying "Eh fuck it, as long as the script isn't fuck awful I'll give a thumbs up to the production." Ultimately the manga and anime film are still there so worst case it gets made and is as terrible as is expected we still have two great versions of the story and can just ignore the live action.

Besides I don't see Akira ever getting made any time soon because everyone who keeps getting attached has no idea what they are doing and clearly they never have made a script good enough for Otomo to give them the go ahead.

>on actual /m/ stuff
Akira is probably the most well known anime film in the entire Western world.
Otomo's schlock IS nu-/m/ale reddit tier shit.

I couldn't agree more.

>>Watches Your Name
You have to watch it if you work in the industry, it's a record breaker and besides, he said "However, I try to watch" he didn't say he liked it.

?

It's now the highest grossing anime film in history.

it's Makoto Shinkai's work.
he's like an one man army of animation field (I guess) & his work's pretty good iI would say.

>he's like an one man army of animation field

Don't kid yourself, he can only make pretty backgrounds and nothing else. Everything he does aside from that is literal garbage.
>>
>>15787177
> make pretty backgrounds
don't Miyazaki did the same somehow? I do remember Miyazaki mentioned about it, as in interview or something but can't recall it.

> literal garbage
only Makoto's /m/echa work into that category, for sure.
>>
>>15787241
>don't Miyazaki did the same somehow?

No, Miyazaki was an actual animator and storyboarder, not a CGI background artist like Shincuck.

>only Makoto's /m/echa work into that category

All his work is trite common denominator garbage that ends up being watered down Terrence Malick.

>>15786549
I think the bombing of the live-action GiTS pretty much canned Hollywood from doing adaptations. I think the problem was they marketed it as weeb capeshit, when it wasn't, and likewise they don't even have that angle to work with in terms of doing Akira.
