Nagai always wanted the series to end the way it did for the most part. He actually wanted more death and a sense of "nothing was accomplished". Season 2 played out the way it was supposed to. Even back when S1 was ending Nagai went out of his way to let fans know that what Tekkadan was doing was "wrong" and they should really be applauded for their deeds.

Eh? That's not the impression I got from the ending. Merely that Tekkadan was unlucky to back the wrong horse in the race by choosing to ally with McGillis who'd turn out to be a floundering moron.

I'm not sure what Tekkadan did 'wrong' aside from continuing forwards while none of their actions were actively treated as wrong. It's mostly Tekkadan being involved as pawns in other greater schemes or Tekkadan taking some kind of from-our-POV justified revenge. Only the Tekkadan Mobile Suit pilots ended up getting killed, and the others continued to live their life trying to find their way without Orga. Though whether they lived or died wouldn't influence the ending much beside its edge, the consequences of Tekkadan's decisions were already set in stone regardless of their continued existence.

When seen in the broader context of the series none of Tekkadan's actions seem bad or overly violent, especially compared what Gjallarhorn and the others were doing. In general he doesn't seem very savvy of the importance of context when he's passing this kind of judgement on Tekkadan. Did he fail to notice that literally every other organisation is way more criminal than Tekkadan? When Tekkadan takes revenge, it's on a skevy, scheming mob boss who's already been planning a coup and contributed to a GH official's mass murder. I like my Gundam with multiple protagonists. That way I have someone in the main cast I could root for.

IBO was a weird series, I felt like Tekkedan was mostly justified but I couldn't root for them and Gjallhorn was completely unlikeable.

The only character I actually liked was Kudelia and she got shafted in season 2 because most of the fans hated her. If she had a bigger role in Season 2,Tekkedan would not have gotten screwed over like they did.

Why do people like gundam It's not as if though I hate gundam, there's just legitimately nothing interesting that it can offer me.

The complex detailing is the exact reason 00 S2 toned down the MS design details. One of the interviews with the mecha designers (or was it animators) was that due to complaints over the lack of more mecha action in S1, they chose to simply the details for animation purposes instead of selectively downgrading animation for certain scenes.

However, they released their more detailed versions in the Designer Series as well as later versions of the 00 Gundam.

IBO is an UNDERSTANDING series, but rather than having heroic protagonists that learn to understand their enemy we instead followed the group that became the villains in the eyes of the public. We (hypothetically) understand why Tekkadan were the way they were and why they did the things they did because we followed their story, in addition it's a couple of the antagonists that learn UNDERSTANDING towards Tekkadan instead.
